  • He's perfect just the way he is. He's is a blessing. :)

  • @MarshmellowKitty1231 Thank you so much for your kind words! He has taught me so much about keeping on the sunny side of life, for sure. I need to do an update, he's been doing so great, he's stronger than in this video now!

  • i had a lab called chico but unfortunatley died last year:( (TRUE STORY).

  • @Bleachdude1199 I am so sorry for your loss. You have excellent taste in both names and dogs.

  • that is so sad

  • @sherribrntt He has no idea there's anything wrong, so he's good. What's sad is that people knowingly breed messed-up puppies.

  • I have a lab ):

  • wheres ur laboratory?

  • My dog looks like that, but she doesn't show any signs of symptoms (she's 3 years of age now). Very playful, but she is......different. In personality, that is. A funny unique different.

  • poor Chico :(

  • I honastly almost cried :( I have had my lab since christmas when I was 5. I'm almost 17 and Baxter is almost 12 :) I love my blondie dearly and he has helped me through so much :) I will have yellow labs until the day I die! Even if it has CNM. I hope it will be prevented. And I hope your video will help. I also put the link to this video in a project for my bio class about genetic disorders(Myotublar Myopathy/CNM), also facebook and tumblr :) VIDEO IS BEING SPREAD!! Thanks for awareness!

  • beautiful

  • @TPSWpresents Thank you so very much.

  • You should really look into getting him some padded dog shoes. That would help with the calluses.

  • What is the average life expectancy of CNM labrador retrievers?

  • Chico is a very lucky and brave dog. My daughter is a vet nurse, today they put an 8 month old chocolate labradoe pup down. She works with specialised vets, and they did exhaustive tests on this much loved pet, he totally could not walk. After all these tests, they have put it down to Myopathy. Very sad to think it is preventable. Some of these dog breeders only seem to be in it for the money, they should be paying the vet bills and witness the suffering of everyone involved.

  • @YourMamaJ Gosh that had to suck! I don't know if I could handle putting a puppy to sleep.

I wish I knew where Chico was bred. I would go to that person's house and I would just show them Chico. Make them see what they have done. And the worst part is, they've probably made several litters, each with one or two dogs with myopathy. And Chico has way more wrong than just that! He has an eyelid condition in one eye, severe cataracts (at age 2!), allergies, and ear infections.

  • Chico is sooo beautifuI and what a happy guy!!! I too have a CNM chocolate lab named Bear. He will be 2 soon. We live in Canada and winters are a little challenging but he is too such a happy guy and loves to play in the snow! Looking forward to warmer weather though! Thanks for this video and getting awarness out there! I too am all for DON"T BREED OR BUY WHILE UNWANTED PETS DIE!

  • Aww you are a good person!!! Chico will be 2 in 2 weeks! I'm really excited and I think I will bake him some peanut butter filled carob cakes again. Those were a smashing hit!!

Chico actually LOVES tearing through new snow. I have noticed that he has gained some strength over the past year, although watching him poop in the snow is still hilarious. But yea, he can get in the car with no assistance 50% of the time now!! Before he couldn't at all. Let me know how Bear is doing sometime!

  • Your giving him the life sure rite you are! i see in his eyes love thats all good!!!!!!!!

  • You're really good to him i am happy he has a good owner like you if he didn't he would die be cause you are a very good owner! Hope he will get big and live the life the life of happy ness bye bye doggy!!! look at my name and cilck to see me puppy bailey shes a nice lab :)

  • The Problem is its difficult to even get people to screen for hip or elbow dysplasia much less DNA testing the percentage of breeders who screen for genetic conditions is so small.

  • Then what are you paying $500 a puppy for? It doesn't cost THAT much to raise a puppy for a few weeks.

Either way, I'm an advocate for "Don't breed or buy while unwanted pets die."

If you are spending hundreds, even thousands, on a product, don't you want to know it's not defective???

  • aaaaaaw im like cying rite now I really want to become a vet due to me not being grosed out by badly injured animals and I love labs there my second vavourite animal coz I love horses the most and I ride horse good video

  • Can CNM kill a dog or shorten their lifespan? I have a 3/4 lab (Mother was a cross between Pointer and Labrador and father was a Labrador.

  • I'm so sorry to hear that your pup has CNM. It seems that the part you have to watch out for most is their esophagus, because it's a muscle that CNM affects. Make sure his food dish is elevated, try to keep him from eating too fast, because CNM dogs will accidentally inhale things and get pneumonia and die that way.

  • Thank you for taking the time to make this great video to educate everyone about CNM. Chief is a sweetheart and you are too!

My friend forwarded the link, she volunteers at a local SPCA where they currently have two young labs with CNM. Seemingly mild conditions similar to Chief's. They don't yet know if the dogs came from the same breeder, they were turned in by two different individuals, but they're looking into it.

  • Oh how sad, I hope they don't have it. It always strikes when they are growing, so if they are pups I wouldn't be surprised.

I hope there are other people out there like me that will take them in regardless of their condition. If you ask Chico, he would tell you he's much happier alive!!!

  • Animals are amazing, aren't they? No self-pity. They just live their lives as best they can. You and Chico are a wonderful team :)

  • Treasure every moment with him. His life is precious. God bless you for being his hero.

  • Thank you for sharing this with us. Cousin Scooter (my most amazing all boy yellow Lab) sends Chico a big hug and kiss.

  • Doggy doggy doggy

Thought it was a joke at first but I have a soft spot in my heart for any doggy, I never knew about that condition

  • My 4 year old las has CNM....it's a real heartbreaking disease, but he is the most remarkable, amazing gift ever. I definately think people should not buy from pet stores and only buy from responsible breeders. My parents bread their two "pet store" labs and they were puppy mill dogs...both carrying the CNM gene....Let's try and be more responsible pet owners!!!

  • What a precious dog! I only read a few other comments, but I (of course) have an opinion on them.

NO, I do not think it is okay to intentionally mate a dog if you are fully aware of him/her having a hereditary illness. But if an accident does happen, it's okay.

It takes a better person to be able to take care of a special needs animal! It takes lots of love, dedication, and responsibility. So all props to the owner!

  • why do you think we shouldnt allow CNM puppies to be born?? Isnt it better for dog to live, even with CNM, than not to be born? as someone said, its only important for him to be loved... nice video, though :)

  • Well, there's a genetic test to see if breeding dogs are carriers. Since we can prevent two carriers from mating, thus producing affected pups, we should. I'm not saying that we should abort puppies or anything!!!

  • thank God my dog doesnt hav this, cuz he runs soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much, we hav shifts every day to walk him lol

  • Thanks for putting the message out there. This was done very well.. very professional.

  • Please do!! I will hug Chico for you, too. :)

PS Don't be sad for Chico, though, what I ask is that you pass this video on to any dog lover you know. All breeding labs should be tested for CNM, and the least I can do is spread the word! Will you help?

  • my dog kind of bunny hops but that could be my imagination. i have a video of my dog on my profile tell me if you think hes cute.

good luck to you and chico i wish you and him luck.

  • Thank you for posting this vid i am about to get a Labrador aswell and i didnt know about centronuclear myopathy until i saw this videos so thank you and keep the videos coming ^^

If the dog is healthy or not i'll send u a mail to update you :)

  • so sad...

  • Excellent video, Beccah. You did a super job with the narration - you sounded like a pro! Anyway, great information. I wish your little boy the best!

  • I just got a 11month old Lab. She's asleep on my bed right now. Ur story is sad but thank you for this video

  • Well. He looks happy and loved.. well done

  • My (human) son has this disease.

  • cute dog pretter then mine my dog is a huskey and a pug

  • Very Cute Puppy!

  • I think your dog needs medical marijuana.

  • I thought you were joking when you said Bunney hopping but then I googled it

  • Very sad but thank yopu for spending the word .. Sad BUT I LOVE DOGS AS A SPOkes woman for Labs4rescue thank you ! :)

  • Are dogs with this disease in any pain?

  • My buddy had a black lab and he ate everything.I hung out with the little hellraiser all day.I think it is great that your dog has a compassionate owner.

  • Great video, I didn't know anything about that. Beautiful dog!

  • I am so lucky! And really, he has no idea that there's anything wrong with him. He's such a puppy in every way! Chews walls, chews socks, destroys fresh snow, rips stuffing out of pillows and comforters, pees in the vets office, you know, all the things normal puppies do! lol

  • It's making it's way out of the purebred labs into their mixed-breed offspring. I hope we can stop this genetic disorder before it literally cripples our favorite breed of dog!!!

  • I don't think his first owner would have given him up either except that he is being deployed to Iraq. This dog is one charming pup!! :)

  • Oh, you should feel how soft he is, too!! He's got a great coat.

    Thanks for the love!

  • Aww,

    he's so cute!

  • Thank you, he has the most amazing coat ever, I wish you could pet him through youtube!!!

  • Does he have trouble pooping?

  • No not at all! Just like any lab, he's a bit selective on where he poops, haha! He kinda looks like he's trying to poop when he walks.

  • That is so sad.

    I feel sorry for him.

  • Aww well he doesn't know anything is wrong with him, to him he's just a normal puppy!

  • Thank you so much for this video! We are in the process of diagnosing our 7 month old labrador with the disease - we are waiting for our dna kit so that we can verify. We did not know of this disease before now - it is unfortunate how easy it is to test a dog before breeding but yet something that some choose not to do. Chico's attitude gives me hope of a future with our pup - thank you for that :)

  • You'll have to let me know how things are going. I am so glad this video could bring us together! :)

  • I think you are a wonderful person and an excellent "Mom" to your fur kids! While you are lucky to have Chico, he is equally as lucky to have found you! I can only imagine how much peace of mind it gave his previous owner knowing since he couldn't keep him due to deployment...Chico was going to a home with someone like you! And thank GOD for people like you beccah! I have more respect for someone who rescues a dog rather than purchasing a puppy. Hugs to you and both babies!

  • Haha, yet I am the one who feels lucky!! :)

  • even though chico is alright..it makes me sad to think about it. dogs are my passion. i love dogs more than some humans.. Chico is adorable. It's weirdly cute how he walks. I hope this video gets alot of attention so people are aware. Thank you for posting it.

  • I am sure that my dog and I are closer than I could ever be with another human.

Someone compared his walking style to Charlie Chaplin. I like that! It's cute and lighthearted! :)

  • Chico is gorgeous. I feel so teary watching the vid.

    Thanks for the info.

  • Aww well I didn't mean to make you cry!!

  • so sad=(

    cutee dog thoo

  • Thanks, he's a handsome boy!

  • If there is anything that we can do count with me!

    Love

    Caesar

  • I feel like crying after watching this. This so extremely sad. So you said the condition stabilizes after a while: does that mean it goes away or gets better? I really hope for either one...poor thing. However, he is blessed to have such a loving, caring and owner as you who is intelligent about the matter, and for that I am incredibly thankful...thanks Lisa.

  • Aww I totally didn't mean to make everyone cry!! So when the condition stabilizes, that means it stops progressing. It never goes away or gets markedly better, although I have heard that swimming and hydrotherapy can help them with building the muscle they do have. I am SO glad I live on a lake!! Now it just has to unfreeze. lol

  • who's a good boy?huh.Who's a good boy?

  • He's spoiled rotten, even though he chews and breaks everything!!!

  • Aw, poor thing. At least he's a happy dog ;)

  • He's so happy!

  • It was really good of you to take time to tell people about this condition, if i ever want to get a lab I'll be sure to take it into consideration.

  • Agreed.

  • Yes, make sure that the breeder tested both parents for the whole list of bad stuff!!

  • Chico is one hell of a handsome pooch! Im glad his CNM is mild and he lives a very happy life with you and 'fatty'.

  • I got really lucky with this one, he's the most handsome boy I've ever seen!! I love the crap out of him, and I am thankful every day that he has a chance at a good life. I feel so spoiled!! :)

  • he might like being hitched up to one

of those homemade carts with wheels

for a break once in a while......

    perhaps.

  • If he makes it into old age, I'm certain that one of those dog wheelcarts would be really useful. Right now he's just a puppy! So the muscle fiber that he does have is only getting stronger right now. He has no idea there's anything wrong with him!!

  • Nice video, Chico is a lovely dog, he is very lucky to have a nice home. :)

  • Aww thanks so much!!

  • My Daughter was working at an animal hospital & had someone bring in a kitten a horrid person thought would be funny to throw off their roof. Her name was LeiLo. Acted odd to say the least. She had a stroke a few weeks ago :( we thought she was going to die or have to be put down. No! She came around! She leans way to one side when she walks & we have to be careful when she tries to rub us or when we put her down, she'll fall over. I now lovingly call her LeanLow & so admire her spirit :)

  • Aww she sounds like a precious doll!! I know all about it; it's like they don't know there's anything wrong with them, so we have to help them out a bit so they don't hurt themselves. It's totally worth the effort though, these pets DO inspire us to be better humans!! :)

  • Thanks for the info and for sharing your information!!

I'm a Lab rescuer, also in Alabama.

  • Aww how awesome!! I love my labs with all of my heart!! I think I will rescue a lab every 10 years for the rest of my life, unless I hit it big and can afford to have THREE dogs! lol

Chico is from Alabama too!! He's a Michigan boy now, though.

  • this video was very well done and for such a worthy cause! good job :)

  • Aww thanks, yea I think it's terrible that puppies like Chico have to be born when it CAN be prevented.

  • good for you beccah, that dog looks like he'll be happy in your loving home.

i too am against buying / breeding. my wife and i both have dogs that followed us home. i found mine, a purebred in a campground at half his current weight. these are good dogs, and it makes me sick that people think they are doing dogs a favour by "setting them free"...to die.

beautiful dog, it's good to see fatty has a companion

  • Yes, and you should see them kiss! They like to lay back to back together, or Chico will throw one of his giant paws over her shoulder and almost spoon with her. It's so precious!

Yipee for the bestest dogs being the rescued dogs!! You are a hero!

  • Wow I have never heard of this diease! How sad for Chico!God bless you for keeping him safe/loved.I CRINGE when I hear a new movie based on one breed is coming out there go the backyard breeder into full tilt!Sadly I am already seeing this happening in local ads and Cragislist.Live well and happy Chico!

  • I know, that Marley and Me movie.... grr. Great book though, I highly recommend it - it made me almost pee myself and laugh out loud and sob aloud and everything, the writer knows how to write!

I tell ya, both of my dogs were given to me free. With so many unwanted dogs out there, I cannot see who in the world chooses to go to a breeder to shell out hundreds of dollars. The public just encourages the breeders!

  • Yes!There were so funny parts but all in all the training methods he used first made my skin crawl. He finally did a turn around towards positive thinking though:)

  • Great video Beccah.

  • I tried very hard with this one. For Chico's sake!

  • Cute Dog I Hope Good Things For Chico

  • So far things are great!! I am sure they will get even better after his neutering (I can't wait)!!!

  • awe...what a nice dog...despite the condition...I'm sure he's super happy!

  • So far so good!!

  • mikma was here

  • Atta girl Beccah. You are so cool. Chico is so lucky to have found his way to you.

  • Aww now I am the lucky one, though!

  • Chico sure is a sweet looking boy, good thing hes got you for a Mom:)

  • He's precious, he follows me around from room to room! He gives great kisses (sometimes you can get him to just touch you with his nose, no tongue-on-face action at all!) and sometimes he lets me lay beside him for longer than a minute. I like to hold his giant paws, its amazing how huge they are!! Oh and did I mention that he has the softest coat you've ever felt? :)

  • *woof* *woof*

  • Don't encourage him!! lol

  • Very well done! Bravo! Chico is such a beautiful boy, and has such a wonderful Mommy! Congratulations again!

  • Thanks, I feel very blessed to have such a great spirit in my life and my home!

  • I am sorry for Chico. I had a beautiful yellow lab, who did not have this condition but had Cardiomyopathy, heart failure, I could do nothing for him, i euthanized him at 6 years old. ANOTHER GENETIC problem. To this i say, I hate irresponsible breeders, who just to make a buck will breed anything to fill their wallet.

  • That one is terrible, because there's no chance with that one. I think it's terrible that we as humans have caused these genetic disorders to proliferate in these purebreeds, especially with all we know about genetics now. I will never buy a dog when they are being euthanized every day for want of a home.

  • killing dogs is fun

  • Aww, he's cute,bless his heart.

  • He's my boy! :)

  • Oh wow, I'm in tears after watching this video. That is such a sad condition. I will pass this on to everyone I know who has a lab. I'm so glad my baby Rosco doesn't have that. I think Chico is a sweetheart. Thanks for the message Beccah!

  • I feel bad that this video made so many people cry!

  • I think it was a really great video. I cried because I Love dogs so much, but especially labs. I am sooooo glad Chico has a great home and a loving mommy to take care of him. He looks like he's going to have a great life.

  • Thank you!

  • aww such a cute dog,, Verry good message becca. People need to smarten up!

  • He's my handsome boy! :)

  • You are amazing.

I just can't even put it into words.

    <3 Nikki

  • If you think I am amazing, you should meet my dogs!! :)

  • nicely done video.

  • So many names for one condition, and isn't it true that labs continue to be the most popular breed in America? It warms me up to see Chico has such a compassionate owner and a nice (snowy!) home with a pal and a big chewy bone.

Adoption FTW: our German shepherd was rescued from a shelter as a puppy, he is the most gentle giant.

  • You are a hero! One man's trash is another man's treasure, certainly! I feel lucky that neither of my dogs had to step foot into a shelter. What a traumatic place!

According to AKC registrations it's the most popular breed. There's no official count of all dogs, just registered ones. But it tends to be a good sample of the population anyway.

  • Yes, Bob Barker always said to spay and neuter your pets! (I'm working on getting Chico fixed, right now the folks at the CNM center are sending me some info regarding CNM dogs and anesthesia.)

  • I don't blame you one bit. I hate doctors, and chose my general practitioner based solely on the fact that he went to a homeopathic school of medicine, and is a real doctor too. He doesn't like writing prescriptions, and I like that.

  • yeahhhhhhhhhhhh it made me cry.

  • Aww I don't want you to cry!! I will hug Chico for you, okay? :)

  • his walking makes him look Charlie Chaplinesque :) so it's still endearing :)

  • Really? I didn't see it that way! But it is pretty cute, huh!

  • aw,im glad your dog is fine and healthy.

  • He has no clue there's anything wrong with him! He loves life just like any puppy would.

  • Mister Chico is so cute! :) Thanks for making this - I had no idea about CNM. I will pass this along.

And I agree 100% about "don't breed or buy..."

  • Chico-Freako, he's our man! lol

Thanks for coming by, Marta! I know you are a dog lover... hey, I'm baking my own dog treats now!! And I just developed a BOMB Valentine's Day doggie cake recipe.... hit me up if you want me to mail you some treats (or recipes!)

  • Chico is adorable! I wish you the best of luck. I've seen this in one dog but I didn't work with him so I never knew what it was. Thank You for sharing this. May his previous owner return safely!!

  • Aww thanks so much, Furni!! I love this boy so much, I don't care when people stare at how he walks. I just explain what CNM is to them and they walk away feeling smarter. :)

  • Thank for the public service. Especially loved the message of "Don't breed or buy while shelter dogs die" that one is near and dear to my heart

  • It's so sad how many animals are put down each day at shelters. And then add to it the numbers of disabled puppies that are put down because we humans don't even breed them responsibly!

  • I used to have a lab and I didn't know that. Makes me wonder if there are other genetic disorders you're supposed to test for in other breeds...

  • Loads and loads. You can thank overbreeding of affected studs and inbreeding for that.

There's a website that tries to list them all.... search for Canine Inherited Disorders Database on google and it should come up.

  • Great site. Some breeds have a lot of possible disorders, woah. One more reason to adopt a mutt. Off-topic but I thought of you when I was cleaning my bathroom with Simple Green this evening.

  • IT'S TOXIC, GET IT AWAY!!!

  • Wow, I had never heard of this and I've had 3 labs (now deceased from old age). Well, they looked like labs but they were dogs that didn't have a home and were taken in by a pet shop or pet rescue place. I don't see the attraction of getting a fancy purebred with papers.

  • Yea, me neither. I like mutts and purebreds equally... they are all sweet four-legged creatures to me! :)

CNM should now be considered a standard test for breeding labs, along with hip dysplasia and the likes....

  • Awesome video Beccah very educational... I'm not a dog person, but I still found this to be very interesting...

  • Thanks so much. It's the only video I've made that I would really like to see on the homepage, so it's cool to hear that even folks like you can dig it! :)

  • You are wlcome Beccah... I hope you get it... I sent it to my friends FunSpace on Facebook, and posted it on another site called Fubar, and I'm featuring on my channel...

  • I blame the obsession for having a "pure race" dog. It always made me sick when people asked me my dog's race when I got him.. can you imagine if they did that with human babies? "oh, you have a baby! is it white?". it's crazy.

  • It's kinda gross, huh? All that inbreeding?

  • I agree 100% -- Don't breed or buy when there are so many pets in Shelters looking for loving homes! All 3 of my dogs came from shelters.

Meli (my lab) says Chico is one hot dog! lol

I still need to get pics of her and get a video made. Today is my day off, maybe I can find time to get that done :)

  • Chico is smexy, huh? :)

Both of my dogs were given to me by people who couldn't keep them anymore. Luckily, they never set foot in a shelter... but both were very close.

  • Thanks for this video beccah. my wife and i talk about getting a lab like that lots fo times. or a huskey. i'll make sure to keep this saved so i can remember to check into it when the time comes. i love almost all dogs and thats heart braking to see this. thanks for the info

  • With purebred dogs, there's a whole host of genetic problems. Please, do your homework if you are going to buy a dog from a breeder... otherwise, adopt! :)

  • Thanks Beccah, good video.

  • Thank you so much, it really means a lot to me to make this video. If I can help out just one person with this video, then it's all worth it!

  • There's now a shot your vet can give your dog that helps prevent that bacteria that causes the kidney failure....

  • This made me cry! As you know I have a yellow lab now too. Chico is beautiful and looks so happy with you and Fatty! As long as he is happy then hell br a great dog! Thank toy becca!

  • Aww I didn't want you to cry!!

It is rather sad though huh. When I walk my dogs, people stare at me, not sure whether to ask about his funny gait or not. We go to the pet store and I find myself explaining his condition to everyone. I didn't know about it and neither do they, so I HAD to make this video!

    LABS FTW!

  • Aww! Poor Chief!

I'm so glad he has you to take care of him!

    Love,

    Jolene Sugarbaker

    The Trailer Park Queen

  • I know, right? Can you imagine being disabled and then losing your parent? I hope I can make the rest of his life a bit less traumatic.

Thank you so much for your kind words, Jolene!

  • Awe! Chico!

    *pats and hugs*

  • I relayed the message. He gave me that dopey-eyed look in return. :)

  • Very well done, Beccah! I've never heard of CNM.

Chico looks very happy despite his sickness but it's really good that it's possible to prevent this.
