to continue - the issue is not only naming, but inclusion. the post ww2 tradition has been to marginalize the eastside. as waves of immigration changed the demographics and language of the eastside, and also the san gabriel valley, big media outlets like the LAT started to ignore the communities to the east. the la eastside name movement is helping to bring the eastern part of the city back into the city's conception of Los Angeles.
azulposeido - the people reclaiming the name are gaining ground. using the term "eastside" to describe silverlake apparently started around a decade ago, and has gained legitimacy with the incoming people and some locals (who are also incoming, in their own way).
the language reclaimers have managed to get the issue raised on blogs, on blog comments, and making it a small issue in the LAT. they've gained numerous hipster and semi-hipster allies.
white is right- so whatever they say it is, is what it is..that coupled with genterfication and white power makes them unstoppable.
but they will never know what true community feels like because their money will rob the soul of any community(like my neighborhood HIghland Park) and it will become as bland and boring as the west side.
I grew up in the eastside and if you were there then you know and if you weren't then you will never know, sorry your money can't buy love....and I love eastsiders.

Money is the root of the problem, I'm talking about class but we also live in a society that gives privilages to whites, so much so that makes a lot of their achievements empty, I didn't cause that the system did.
Crime and poverty don't make a community the system does that and we are a stronger community and poeple because we survive and some overcome it ...and that strength and beauty draws westsiders in...
With the ever flowing influx of aspiring actors and others that arrive in LA and populate areas like Silver Lake and Echo Park arent the This is not the Eastside people fighting a loosing battle?
The new Eastsiders have no idea of the history of the area or the connotation of the Eastside term but they refer to the area as Eastside and will probably continue to do so to differentiate it from other more western areas of LA.
