Okay, so I watched the entire series of part 1.

He cannot be dead. We've seen he's a pretty smart guy and look at the description. You'd think he'd have written that otherwise if he were trying to tell us he was dead.

Like a very observant person pointed out, the tags "jj" and "abrams" are in each video. It looks amateurish (not an insult just an observation) but it was professionally produced. Cloverfield looked amateurish (again, not an insult), but it was professionally produced. Before Cloverfield there was a huge viral marketing campaign complete with an "explosion" of a tanker video. The same thing is going on here. They're trying to make it look as real as possible.
