If I may correct you, another term for "cockpit" in standard railway english (UK, AUS, NZ & SA, is "footplate".

You are absolutely right. (footplate - the platform in the cab of a locomotive on which the engineer stands to operate the controls )

I had no dictionary, I knew it might be wrong, that's why I used the quotation marks.
