I got to go to their last concert (in Baires) although I didn't know it was to be their last performance at the time. The encore was Atmosphere, this and Love Will Tear Us Apart, I cried during this song, the relief and happiness of seeing them play Joy Division after all the years they had refused to do so was just too much. With hindsight I feel very privileged. Sorry to anyone if I sound like I'm gloating
This is Joy Division playing and New Order singing! I know the Sumner's voice is not like Ian's, but I like when New Order plays JD songs. Anyway, they are Joy Division without the main vocal.
Interesting proposition. Bono, a major JD fan, clearly has these songs ingrained in him. I saw U2 doing Love Will Tear Us Apart - Bono has impeccable timing which is imperative to pull that song off. His voice is still great, although Bono circa 1987 might be more able to really do something special with Shadowplay. The only thing I did not like with U2's Love Will Tear Us Apart was how Bono went up several octaves on the last chorus- too showy, too flashy -- even Bono must bow to IAN.
It's missing Ian's intensity, but being the original musicians, it's hard to put any fault in the performance musically. It's far closer to the original than you're ever going to get again.
You know fans don't have to live with? The fact that their best friend killed him self and they didn't know it until the took a good listen to the album. That's the difference between us and them. Let them tribute Ian in their own way, they helped make the music we love.
It is really time to stop criticizing Barney for singing these songs! Him, Peter, and Stephen had every right in the world to perform these songs. It's ashaim they had to break up, because all you haters never had a chance to thank them for keeping Joy Division and Ian's memory alive! Granted it wasn't the same hearing Barney sing JD songs, but still it was nice to hear such songs performed live. I had the privilage of seeing NO in 05' and they did JD songs. Great show!
I agree, and that;s exactly why they started playing them again after 25 years. To celebrate Ian after 25 years. They didn't play them for all that time. I wish they would play more of their own older stuff though. When was the last time (when they were together) they played anything from Technique? That I would love to see. Everything from the 80's would be cool. That would be heaven.
Bernard's voice doesn't really suit the song but I'd rather hear JD songs by the band that composed them than some tribute band. The Killers' version makes me puke (no offense to any fans). It's not Bernard's fault that Ian is dead and can't play with them anymore.
LMAO, New Order, who used to be 3 quarters Joy Division btw, did compose this music.
along with Ian Curtis. That's pretty ignorant right there. I love this track and I do prefer Ian singing this one. However, over all, I much prefer New Order's music, it can reach parts that others can't reach. For me anyway. I adore Bernard's lyrics, and him as a musician. I love Ian too, but there is nothing like NO. I actually prefer NO to do NO songs, because they're mostly better tunes. IMO.
I totally agree with The Killers version... The stupid "ooh ooh ooh" has no place in the song and adds nothing. And the singer's voice is off-key. Brutal. Id rather hear a cover of Warsaw by Hannah Montana than The Killers' Shadowplay lol
The next best thing to Joy Division with Ian Curtis is Joy Division without Ian Curtis, and here it is folks. These videos are a terrific tribute, flaws and all.
You're a cock. Barney if anything got stronger and better musically when they started New Order. especially arond the time between Lowlife and Technique. Most people who are JD lovers and NO haters have only head 3 songs by NO, you know the obvious 3. Blue Monday, Truth Faith and World In Motion. LMAO. NO have a lot more diversity to them.
than just what you think they are
New Order have some amazing music, and it's timeless music.
It's not like Ian Curtis was much more manly either. Your idol used to wear makeup in case you didn't know. I don't know why you hate Barney so much. Sure he doesn't sing as good as Ian, but like it or not, he was part of Joy Division and he DID contribute to the sound you love (I presume you like JD) so much.
Good! That's a more positive response than hating this and hating that. I'm also in a band and it's Bernard Sumner's influence (amongst others) that started me in music.

I think Bernard performs this brilliantly and their Joy Division tracks actually suit his voice well.

I hate Bernard Sumner, looks like a quier and sings Joy Division Songs very badly.
And it seems to don't know how to play guitar and sing at the same time. he needs a second guitarist. It's a shame.
I love Ian Curtis but I FUCKING HATE this guy.
He doesn't even know the lyrics of the song perfectly.
(Peter Hook still good anyway)

For me it's Ian Curtis :)
I don't hate Bernard for himself, but you know..it's tha fact that he's singing a song, words, that dont't belong to him.
More, he doesn't even know the lyrics pefectly and doesn't play as well as he did when he was in Joy Division..
I have a lot of respect for Ian memory and with that bernard doesn't make justice to him enough..
Hope you understand my point of view..
