  • can u tell me ur skin settings? i have unity free, but i want it to look like pro version

  • NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The primitives use the accursed triangles!!!!! (i do modeling and animation, but am new to games) Now i need to go punch a teddy bear.

  • @GeekinsteinTutorials Uhm, you mean "polygons"? You're used to them using quads?

  • @2hakkabakka Primitives=the basic shapes. ie. cubes, spheres, etc.

yes, i am used to using quads, but like i said, i do animation, not game design.

  • @GeekinsteinTutorials I'll probably give you nightmares now, but those quads... ...are ALL MADE of two of those triangles each. The line between the two corners of each quad, just isn't drawn, to make a modelling structure more comprehensible to the user. (You can of course model using triangles too.)

  • @2hakkabakka Have you ever tried deforming a mesh that has triangles? It is terrible.

PS. I now know that most gaming engines use triangles.

  • @GeekinsteinTutorials Unfortunately you're not able to deform primtives at all in the Unity engine. I really miss Hammer's primitive vertex modelling, but in Unity they seem to expect you to even model wedge shapes through Blender/Maya/? if you want them.

  • @2hakkabakka Interesting...

Ps. how does Unity compare with blender's game engine?

PPs. I have used both Maya and Blender, and Blender is the clear champion between the two.

  • @GeekinsteinTutorials You probably meant Hammer's game engine. Well, Hammer is somewhere between Unity and UDK in terms of power and ease-to-use, but it narrows you down to Valve games, and what made me abandon that engine is that in some cases, simple primitive cube forms sometimes get decimal errors during compilations: Their vertices move slightly, creating small gaps in the level.

  • @2hakkabakka I was actually referring to Blender- the 3d software. It has a built in game engine. They made an open game called YoFrankie in it.

I have heard of the Unreal Development Kit, but i don't have any idea what Hammer is.

  • @GeekinsteinTutorials Hammer is the editor of all Valve's Source games. There's a huge Hammer modding community, desperately needing modellers. If you're good at modelling, they might even be able to pay you money for your services.

  • wouldn't the android licence be free since it is open source?

  • Its about 30,000 dollars for the consoles which is alot of money lol.

  • how much are licenses for pc/mac/web???

  • @FeartheHamburgler There all free just the consoles that needs the licenses which is 30,000 dollars.

  • Awesome Unity tutorials, they've been a huge help. I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on creating custom editor windows. I'm having a tough time putting one together myself from the documentation. Thanks!

  • Hi, are you planning to continue these tutorials into unity? nowadays (jan 2011?)

  • HELP PLEASE! i no this isnt a tutorial or anything but im expecting u no something.. everytime i put something on my terrain it just phases right thru it!(im making a fps) my rocket launcher rockets went thru it..my cloth slipped thru..except for my guy,trees,grass,building,etc.. they just stay there, they dont even move(including my guy)

  • So now that Unity 3.0 is available as a GA release, i.e. both Pro and Indie versions are readily available -- are we going to see a re-visit to your great tutorials?? Hoping so!

  • where's the rest?

  • hey what do you get when you start unity 3.0 because in unity 2.6 you got the island and i really wanna know what you get..... somone please help :P

  • hey dude thanks for the Tutorial its great. can i ask you one thing im not sure if you still remember a while back you did a tutorial on 3d menus, i am importing my old project in to unity and that script "Menu Manager" has gone complete mad it is not reading the array. can you check and see if you have the same problem if you import the script in with the relevant scene thanks please let me know Asap thank you..:)

  • Alec, could you do some stuff about deferred shading? I heard that's really important for rts games. Do you need unity pro for deferred shading?

  • i like the black look :D

how can people get a beta?? free?

  • @kipkip123thomas You need to have pre-ordered unity 3.0 pro or by already being part of the beta testing program. With pre-ordering you get access to preview builds but don't continue testing new versions after release.

  • i think your tutorials are the best unity tutorials on youtube that i have seen, i want more, i also want to see more unity 3 stuff, because im have not bought it ( i have the free version) and i dont get to use the betas, so i would like to see more, of unity 3
