Yeah, it sounds like bass harmonics to me, I tried to work it out but I dunno, maybe he uses an alt tuning?

Its definitely bass.

yes it's bass and he uses hamonics which is when you pluck the string but don't fully press down on the fretboard. You get a much higher pitch depending on the position on the neck that you touch the string. Best example can be heard on Portrait Of Tracy by Jaco (bass player)
