Whenever I hear this, I imagine myself in a car looking in boredom at the wide outstretch of a beach when the sun is on the horizon. We're driving home because of a beautiful evening on the white sands, me and my best friend. Ah, what a fun time.... :3 xD <3
The first time I heard this, I got an image of two friends saying goodbye to each other and walking off into the sunset. It's kind of sad but happy at the same time. Weird, I know... But I still LOVE this song! :)
Yes, pseudo-French it is. Or at least it seems to be said so. She, the composer Yoko Kanno, is said sometimes to write lyrics using not anywhere existing language in the world, which is called Gabriela language. (Gabriela Robin is her pseudonym as a singer when she herself sings over her tunes.)

I don't see how there can possibly be an argument for watching dubs over subs. If it's translated even semi-properly, subs are the way to go. For an anime like Bebop which is created originally as an anime, it's a complete waste to watch a dub no matter how well it's done. Way too much work was put into finding the right people and I'm sure a tone of work was done to get it all perfectly done. Far too much in terms of tone/depth is lost in dubs imo.
@acies92 honestly, as long as the dubs are not horrible ( lot of 4Kids anime somehow put the worst possible dub on a good anime) then i think people in the US prefer whichever version they see first: i saw Bebop first in dub, and to me, those voices are Spike, Julia, Vicious, Jet, Ed, and Fay. Trying to listen to the Japanese sub just feels wrong.
"je suis", in this case, means "i'm his", so i'm guessing that the french portion of this song is the story from the puppy's point of view. just sayin'.
@astraeagreek Traditionally girls don't use the word "boku," but a lot of them do anyway =P It's becoming increasingly common, especially in children and teens.
@AhMunnaEechu Boku no is both for male and female. as well as atashi, and all other ones. Except for ore, which is male only (because women don't have a way to say "i" that equals "ore" on informality: only men can be that informal), the rest ones are both male and female.
@58Proxy Are you serious? Ed's the first person I thought of while I listened to the song. She sounds so precious and pure :) It makes me all happy and shit.
@LieutenantSarcasm26 haha yep most people dont know but i found out a while back ^^ and plus if you read the lyrics its really clear that only Ed could sing about this lol
@58Proxy Are you serious? Ed's the first person I thought of while I listened to the song! She sounds so precious and pure :) It makes me all happy and shit.
@vanillatoast14 Well, technically the song really isn't French. It *sounds* French, but is one of the many "gibberish" nonsensical languages that Yoko is known for using. So, don't worry about not getting the pronouncing right ^^;; it's not a real language.
@insanentity Ya I know but still, like for Green Bird I get the lyrics right because I've listened to it at least 50 times and I want to get these lyrics right to. Thank you anyways =]
At least earlier bits of that episode strongly suggest that Ed will be fine out there by her own. And she has Ein to keep her company, so that's something.
People, people, people .... That's not French. It is in fact a language which Yoko Kanno created for use in some of her songs, such as this one and Green Bird. I find that much of it is like French, yes, but it isn't French. It is a language of Kanno's own construction.
The French part of this song is barely French. I searched it up, used an online translator, and read from some people who actually know French which most said that it's nonsense along with a few consonants. But, I still love this song.
I even made a short story over it. I'd really love to hear a young girl sing this song in real life. It's so innocent, soft, smooth, and seems so delicate with a hint of melancholy.
In my story, she gets her dog back, but there's somewhat of a twist.
@silent561 tu es l'amour, la moitie de moi - the french part is hard to understand because of the accent but that's fine. Why not play around with languages since music itself is the extension of that :) But just out of hearing the way the sentence is made feels like it is made out of japanese grammar; shame I don't understand much of it, grammar is like a form of logic and way of thinking underlayed in each language - mixing those make things interesting ^^
this song is really sad, because it reminds me of Edward and Ein's departure from Bebop crew in ep. 24. Both Spike and Jet silently ate eggs for dinner that was meant to be shared by all 5 of them, and they pretended not to be bothered by Edward and Ein's departure, also pretending not to care about Faye's absence. Seriously, look at Spike and Jet's facial expression when they are silently eating at the end of the episode. You could feel their melancholic state of mind.
By the way, the Japanese is actually, “Boku no ko-inu ga”, which means, “My puppy…”.
Boku no ko-inu ga inakunatta = My puppy is gone.
僕の子犬がいなくなった (ぼくのこいぬがいなくなった)。
My French is poor, but the Japanese part of this song is a sad tale of an owner who has lost his or her dog and wants it back. He or she explains how the dog looks (white tail, white back) and reminisces of the memories they shared.
@LSpiro I will put my money on it being a girl who lost the dog, I mean its a chick whos singing....its not important but just a random comment! her french sounds really nice!
@LSpiro. Oh my gosh. A person on Youtube who actually knows Japanese...
o_o
Its just funny because you always hear people complain about english dubbing (obviously having never watched decent dubs or having been so badly scarred by "awful" dubs that they avoid all dubs like the plague) and saying Japanese is always so much better, but can't understand the language at all and feel superior for that.
The majority of dubs I've seen where fucking terrible. Is it my fault for wanting to stay away from them and view the ORIGINAL? I never felt fucking 'superior,' if I have no idea what the dub is. If for instance someone says "I love One Piece! I saw the 4kids dub :D" I'll call them a retard and tell them that that is not fucking One Piece, it's just something that happens to have 90% of the same animation.
You clearly have no idea what the fuck you are talking about.
I look like a jackass in your eyes, clearly because you're really really really stupid.
It doesn't matter when it was written if it's bullshit. I don't check the date on every post just to make sure I don't reply to an old one, the date makes no difference to anything other than the fact that I can safely assume after seeing your post that you've been really thick for at least three months.
Care to address my points rather what the date has told you?
@bannanatree You clearly missed my point, the emphasis was on the fact that you get all hyped up about something over one's opinion on the internet, and you end up looking like a jackass because you're making a judgement call about something someone said a long time ago, just let it go dude and enjoy the damn music. Fuck.
I would if it wasn't so glaringly obvious that you're wrong.
You still didn't address the points you just provided your side of the argument and then called me a jackass for giving mine.
I'm making a judgement call about what you said a long time ago, because what you said a long time ago, still reflects your thoughts, unless you've changed your mind - which it doesn't seem you have.
@bannanatree I didn't say it what that other guy said, but you're getting butthurt over a youtube comment. It's just the guy's opinion, I don't see why you should get offended because he was referencing another group of people, unless you feel like you belong to the group of people he was poking fun at because that clearly seems to be the case if you're going to keep bitching about it. All in all I'd like to say you're reading too much into people's comments and you make yourself look foolish.
That guys wrong and if you believe in what he's saying you are just as wrong. The only person that think I look like a jackass for replying angrily is you. I do belong to that group which I've already expressed and I'm reading as far into someone's comment as can be read in a comment, otherwise I would have to read half then leave the rest and assume it was an apology for the bullshit spoken at the start.
@bannanatree Well now not only do you look like a jackass, but you look like a condescending asshole as well. I'm glad he insulted people like you, thinking you know everything and thinking you're better just cause you watch Japanese dubs instead of English ones, ESPECIALLY when you don't speak a lick of the language. Sure, English dubs are usually done terribly but that doesn't mean you can be a jackass who constantly bitch and whine just cause people don't agree with you.
@bannanatree I'm the condescending asshole, yet you're the one calling others stupid, mentally inferior, or outright inferior due to your status of being irrevocably correct? Ha. Glad I didn't read this until three months later. I have nothing to say to you if you can't calm down and debate rationally.
Dude wat, you're the one who insulted me, your scope was unbelievably wide, encompassing pretty much anyone that generally prefers subs to dubs. I called you stupid because that's exactly what you're being, stupid, I'm not trying to insult you, it's just what I can see as apparent, if you genuinly believe anyone that watches subs without speaking Japanese thinks they're superior to people who watch dubs.
@bannanatree I also hate how you're so hell bent on having to insult people if they don't go along with you're opinion because quite frankly it's just an opinion and you look like an uptight jackass for it. So please excuse me for laughing at you for being so butthurt, and perhaps you should find something better to do with your time than replying to comments on youtube just because they say something that is truthful yet probably hurtful for sensitive pricks like you.
I'm not hellbent on insulting those that don't go along with my opinions, I'm hell-bent on insulting those who insult me and telling them that they're wrong for telling me my beliefs on that matter are wrong.
You can't just turn around in a debate and say "yeah, well that's just YOUR OPINION" otherwise it ceases to be a debate an becomes a "who can look the most polite" match.
"Find something better to do with your time than replying to comments on youtube"
@bannanatree In that context I appear to be hypocritical but you missed the point I was trying to make. I was saying that you shouldn't get bitchy just cause someone says something that you get offended by. There's no point in making a bigger deal about it than necessary but you obviously have no restraint. I'm done arguing with you as it is a waste of MY time as well. Good day sir.
When someone insults me and talks shit, I tell them they're wrong. If that involves calling them stupid and I believe they're being stupid, then I will.
And I did and I'm glad I did.
I see your point, I just don't think it's valid, hence arguing back.
@bannanatree Why would you have this silly argument over voice dubs? Why do you care if some people prefer the English dub over the original Japanese voices? Keep your opinion to yourself. You can't change someone's opinion over something like this, it's like trying to turn a homosexual into a straight person, or someone religious into irreligious.
It's not about which is better, people can watch whichever they want (although 4kids dubs make me rage) but when they insult me for preferring one, again, I tell them how stupied they're being.
Although I see your point, even if I were trying to change his mind, changing someone from gay to straight is completely different, as that's not a choice. A religion or an opinion - if it is one that is ridiculous - are choices and often denial in the face of obvious contradictory evidence
@bannanatree and all you've been doing it talking shit to him.
Oh let me guess, you'll claim "you weren't talking shit about him", he was actually insulting you just by disagreeing with you or defending me. Hypocritical scum. [You clearly have no idea what the fuck you are talking about.] [That guys wrong and if you believe in what he's saying you are just as wrong. The only person that think I look like a jackass for replying angrily is you].
Were those quotes meant to show me that I have been "talking shit?" He DOESN'T have any idea what he was talking about and obviously if someone's wrong and someone else agrees, they're just as wrong - that's not opinion that's fact, being wrong is my opinion,,,
I haven't been talking shit, I've provided my own valid points which generally haven't been adressed, people just seem to say "YOU'RE MEAN" if they don't want to debate then don't, I wasn't however being a cunt.
@bannanatree see, I once had an argument with someone like you. I could link you to it, not that you would care. This person told me I was wrong because I disagreed that their "sub-opinion" that all dubbing was inherently bad, I tried to dissuade them, they said it wouldn't matter. I was in your position.
Now I'm in theirs, according to you. See, you take things too personally. Not once did I address you in my above comment, so stop acting like a child who got smacked for taking a cookie.
No you didn't address me DIRECTLY but you addressed me and so many others indirectly as your scope was way too wide, not everyone that doesn't watch dubs feels superior or is a dick head, I've only watched two or three dubs, which I didn't like. The Dragon Ball Z and Cowboy Bebop dubs were great, but it feels unnatural to watch anime with dubs, so I don't, I've never felt superior just because I do. I don't think all dubbing is inherently bad.
@Momentum139 people dont like dubs simply because they sound like shit. it has nothing to do with being elitist. black lagoon and evangelion are the only animes that come to mind as far as good english dubs go
@flectz, it wouldn't matter how much evidence to the contrary I gave you, would it. Even if I showed you a Japanese director who felt the dubbing of his own anime was better than the original Japanese dubbing, you would still vehemently believe all English dubbing is shitty, right? There's really no point in arguing.
@Momentum139 why would i change my opinion just because a japanese director thought something was better? I could care less. so yeah, you're right. i would still prefer subs. but the reason why i prefer them isnt because i feel "superior" for watching japanese dub, its just because it sounds better. english doesnt fit well with most anime (try watching K-ON eng dubs), its just a difference in culture, a lot of things don't transfer well and get lost in translation.
@flectz, well then let me inject this. I could care less that anything gets lost in translation, because often, an anime conveys cultural euphemisms and other things that typically a native Japanese person might understand, the same way Americans would typically acknowledge the 4th of July. I'm not Japanese, few English-speaking anime fans are most likely. The English sounds better, to me, because it's understood, not simply heard. I apologize for my assumptions.
@flectz, I feel as though we watch very different forms of anime. I bring my opinion that the English dubbing is superior (in some cases) from animes such as Death Note, Gurren Lagann, Yu Yu Hakusho, Cowboy Bebop, Serial Experiments Lain, Haruhi Suzumiya, and Full Metal Alchemist. All of these dubbed animes have given me an impression that a dubbing can be just as good, if not superior to a subbing. I simply detest having to read subtitles, it takes away from the experience for me.
K-on is my favourite anime, I just watched the first 7 minutes of the english dub and TBH I can't see what you mean; it's better than most. They kept the songs in Japanese and a lot of it was translated literally, although it may become a little messed up later (like writing the kanji for pumpkin on your hand and eating it, rather than person) only minor changes, it doesn't look so bad =\
@bannanatree if you have anything more to argue, we'll continue it in the messaging system. But I'm not going to spoil this beautiful song on a dubbing vs subbing vs morality vs conceptions vs personal point of view argument by slugging it out. Please don't misunderstand my evasion for cowardice.
Well, no it may not have the same effect, but it will make sense and she can either not poke or just say something else when she does, there's no problem there, as I said an extremely minor change. She may even SAY Puni Puni, just as the songs are still in Japanese, and she refers to Nodoka as "Nodoka-Chan," it's clear they're keeping with the Japanese terms, the dub looks very good. I wouldn't WATCH it, but it looks well done, I just prefer subs.
@bannanatree I generally prefer dubbing to subbing as I believe any anime director's intent is to couple the idea being expressed in both audio and visuals, so having to take my eyes off the animation to read seems inherently incorrect to me.
Not that I'm trying to flame here, I just thought to give my stance as I was appreciative to read yours - that not all sub-lovers are elitest pricks - and I would like to commend you for keeping your comments civil and grammatically correct. Thank you.
Hey, thanks man, yeah I see were you're coming from. Although for me it's just natural, I don't miss any of the visuals through reading and I even read it out in an English voice in my head; when I'm not watching a sub but hear the audio I realise how... Japanese it sounds :D Like when I realised that every time they say 'Luffy' in One Piece they're actually saying "Roofy." TBH I've never watched a full anime in dubs but I plan to soon.
@bannanatree You can start with Baccano. Absolutely stunning dub voices. They nail the accents down perfectly (most of the cast has New York/Italian-American accents). The Japanese actors simply don't get the accents down, reducing the immersiveness.
@Scrinoverlord Baccano is kind of hard to get into. It takes a few episodes to start making any sense. :P
No question about the casting, though. The English dub is spectacular, and gives such life to the entire cast of characters. And for Baccano, that's a hell of a thing to do!
Yeah, I agree there too. I don't think there's anything WRONG with dubs, I think there's something wrong with people who say everyone that watches subs without even speaking Japanese feels superior - I don't neither do most (and if they do his scope was far to wide and encompassed people who genuinely don't.)
@bannanatree I highly recommend pissing yourself, followed by a course of praying to your impotent god. Because I'm about to show you a truth you probably wouldn't have expected.
Look for the [Gurren Lagann Bandai Trailer] and look down through the comments until you reach mine or see some of the complaints. Two wrongs don't make a right, but if you're going to take this personally, then I want you to understand my side of this.
From what I can see though it looks like you're saying "Not all dubs are bad but some are." which is exactly what I was saying... (Although I was also saying it was ridiculous that you accused sub watchers of feeling superior and seemed to insinuate that you should only watch subs if you can actually speak Japanese...)
@LSpiro when i first listened to this song i started getting sad. now i try not to think in japanese, if that makes any sense, but its hard not to still love the song though
@gaijinonozomi I thought so, because I worked in a French company (and in France even) and the boss said he didn’t hear any French at all (he is native to France).
@LSpiro SPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILERSPOILER i did not get the relevance of the song.. but it played during the episode when Edward left.... and it worked really well...
@LSpiro The French part of the song isn't French, it's just French-sounding gibberish. And on the topic of what "Wo Qui Non Coin" means, I can only assume it's a French-sounding transliteration of Boku no ko-inu. It sounds similar, anyway.
lisoning to this brings an image to my head. a girl laying in a feild of grass staring into the brght blue sky singing this song thinking of someone specal
when i lisin to this song i could imagine singing this somewhere on a open field in some forest under the bright moon light as i stared over the horizen at some cliff. stareing at all the wonderful stars on the blue night sky.
Whenever I hear this, I imagine myself in a car looking in boredom at the wide outstretch of a beach when the sun is on the horizon. We're driving home because of a beautiful evening on the white sands, me and my best friend. Ah, what a fun time.... :3 xD <3

I tried translation in English:)
(the title of this song, "Wo Qui Non Coin" sounds similar to "Boku no koinu ( my puppy)" in Japanese and this is why the title is.)
My puppy is gone, white legs and tail. I've been with him for so long. woo
My puppy is gone, white ears and the back. I've been with him for so long.
I have been living everyday, with my tears still drying
So, come home soon

So, soon, come home, soon

@vanillatoast14 Well, technically the song really isn't French. It *sounds* French, but is one of the many "gibberish" nonsensical languages that Yoko is known for using. So, don't worry about not getting the pronouncing right ^^;; it's not a real language.

In my story, she gets her dog back, but there's somewhat of a twist.
silent561 1 year ago

Kanuskiz 1 year ago 10
Yoko Kanno is a genius. nuff said.
shadow108321 1 year ago
By the way, the Japanese is actually, “Boku no ko-inu ga”, which means, “My puppy…”.
Boku no ko-inu ga inakunatta = My puppy is gone.
僕の子犬がいなくなった (ぼくのこいぬがいなくなった)。
My French is poor, but the Japanese part of this song is a sad tale of an owner who has lost his or her dog and wants it back. He or she explains how the dog looks (white tail, white back) and reminisces of the memories they shared.

It doesn't matter when it was written if it's bullshit. I don't check the date on every post just to make sure I don't reply to an old one, the date makes no difference to anything other than the fact that I can safely assume after seeing your post that you've been really thick for at least three months.
Care to address my points rather what the date has told you?
bannanatree 10 months ago
@bannanatree You clearly missed my point, the emphasis was on the fact that you get all hyped up about something over one's opinion on the internet, and you end up looking like a jackass because you're making a judgement call about something someone said a long time ago, just let it go dude and enjoy the damn music. Fuck.
An0m1n0us 10 months ago
@An0m1n0us
I would if it wasn't so glaringly obvious that you're wrong.
You still didn't address the points you just provided your side of the argument and then called me a jackass for giving mine.
I'm making a judgement call about what you said a long time ago, because what you said a long time ago, still reflects your thoughts, unless you've changed your mind - which it doesn't seem you have.
bannanatree 9 months ago
@bannanatree I didn't say it what that other guy said, but you're getting butthurt over a youtube comment. It's just the guy's opinion, I don't see why you should get offended because he was referencing another group of people, unless you feel like you belong to the group of people he was poking fun at because that clearly seems to be the case if you're going to keep bitching about it. All in all I'd like to say you're reading too much into people's comments and you make yourself look foolish.
An0m1n0us 9 months ago
@An0m1n0us
Oh you didn't write it.
Oh well, changes very little.
That guys wrong and if you believe in what he's saying you are just as wrong. The only person that think I look like a jackass for replying angrily is you. I do belong to that group which I've already expressed and I'm reading as far into someone's comment as can be read in a comment, otherwise I would have to read half then leave the rest and assume it was an apology for the bullshit spoken at the start.
bannanatree 9 months ago
@bannanatree Well now not only do you look like a jackass, but you look like a condescending asshole as well. I'm glad he insulted people like you, thinking you know everything and thinking you're better just cause you watch Japanese dubs instead of English ones, ESPECIALLY when you don't speak a lick of the language. Sure, English dubs are usually done terribly but that doesn't mean you can be a jackass who constantly bitch and whine just cause people don't agree with you.
An0m1n0us 9 months ago
@An0m1n0us
Talk so much shit.
HE was the one do be a condescending ass-hole and I've already explained why I prefer the Sub of most animes.
I never said watching Dubs is a bad thing in all cases, I expressed that people have the choice to do watch whichever they like.
I don't speak the language, what's your point? That's what the subtitles are for.
Most of what you just said is the reason I'm so pissed at the other guy.
bannanatree 9 months ago
@bannanatree I'm the condescending asshole, yet you're the one calling others stupid, mentally inferior, or outright inferior due to your status of being irrevocably correct? Ha. Glad I didn't read this until three months later. I have nothing to say to you if you can't calm down and debate rationally.
Momentum139 6 months ago
@Momentum139
Dude wat, you're the one who insulted me, your scope was unbelievably wide, encompassing pretty much anyone that generally prefers subs to dubs. I called you stupid because that's exactly what you're being, stupid, I'm not trying to insult you, it's just what I can see as apparent, if you genuinly believe anyone that watches subs without speaking Japanese thinks they're superior to people who watch dubs.
bannanatree 6 months ago
@bannanatree I also hate how you're so hell bent on having to insult people if they don't go along with you're opinion because quite frankly it's just an opinion and you look like an uptight jackass for it. So please excuse me for laughing at you for being so butthurt, and perhaps you should find something better to do with your time than replying to comments on youtube just because they say something that is truthful yet probably hurtful for sensitive pricks like you.
An0m1n0us 9 months ago
@An0m1n0us
I'm not hellbent on insulting those that don't go along with my opinions, I'm hell-bent on insulting those who insult me and telling them that they're wrong for telling me my beliefs on that matter are wrong.
You can't just turn around in a debate and say "yeah, well that's just YOUR OPINION" otherwise it ceases to be a debate an becomes a "who can look the most polite" match.
"Find something better to do with your time than replying to comments on youtube"
Hypocritical much?
bannanatree 9 months ago
@bannanatree In that context I appear to be hypocritical but you missed the point I was trying to make. I was saying that you shouldn't get bitchy just cause someone says something that you get offended by. There's no point in making a bigger deal about it than necessary but you obviously have no restraint. I'm done arguing with you as it is a waste of MY time as well. Good day sir.
An0m1n0us 9 months ago
@An0m1n0us
Of course I should get "bitchy."
When someone insults me and talks shit, I tell them they're wrong. If that involves calling them stupid and I believe they're being stupid, then I will.
And I did and I'm glad I did.
I see your point, I just don't think it's valid, hence arguing back.
bannanatree 9 months ago
@bannanatree Why would you have this silly argument over voice dubs? Why do you care if some people prefer the English dub over the original Japanese voices? Keep your opinion to yourself. You can't change someone's opinion over something like this, it's like trying to turn a homosexual into a straight person, or someone religious into irreligious.
MajinBejitto 9 months ago
@MajinBejitto

Were those quotes meant to show me that I have been "talking shit?" He DOESN'T have any idea what he was talking about and obviously if someone's wrong and someone else agrees, they're just as wrong - that's not opinion that's fact, being wrong is my opinion,,,
I haven't been talking shit, I've provided my own valid points which generally haven't been adressed, people just seem to say "YOU'RE MEAN" if they don't want to debate then don't, I wasn't however being a cunt.
bannanatree 6 months ago
@bannanatree see, I once had an argument with someone like you. I could link you to it, not that you would care. This person told me I was wrong because I disagreed that their "sub-opinion" that all dubbing was inherently bad, I tried to dissuade them, they said it wouldn't matter. I was in your position.
Now I'm in theirs, according to you. See, you take things too personally. Not once did I address you in my above comment, so stop acting like a child who got smacked for taking a cookie.
Momentum139 6 months ago
@Momentum139
I don't think all dubbing is inherently bad.
bannanatree 6 months ago
@Momentum139 people dont like dubs simply because they sound like shit. it has nothing to do with being elitist. black lagoon and evangelion are the only animes that come to mind as far as good english dubs go
flectz 7 months ago
@flectz, it wouldn't matter how much evidence to the contrary I gave you, would it. Even if I showed you a Japanese director who felt the dubbing of his own anime was better than the original Japanese dubbing, you would still vehemently believe all English dubbing is shitty, right? There's really no point in arguing.
Momentum139 7 months ago
@Momentum139 why would i change my opinion just because a japanese director thought something was better? I could care less. so yeah, you're right. i would still prefer subs. but the reason why i prefer them isnt because i feel "superior" for watching japanese dub, its just because it sounds better. english doesnt fit well with most anime (try watching K-ON eng dubs), its just a difference in culture, a lot of things don't transfer well and get lost in translation.
flectz 7 months ago
@flectz, well then let me inject this. I could care less that anything gets lost in translation, because often, an anime conveys cultural euphemisms and other things that typically a native Japanese person might understand, the same way Americans would typically acknowledge the 4th of July. I'm not Japanese, few English-speaking anime fans are most likely. The English sounds better, to me, because it's understood, not simply heard. I apologize for my assumptions.
Momentum139 7 months ago
@flectz, I feel as though we watch very different forms of anime. I bring my opinion that the English dubbing is superior (in some cases) from animes such as Death Note, Gurren Lagann, Yu Yu Hakusho, Cowboy Bebop, Serial Experiments Lain, Haruhi Suzumiya, and Full Metal Alchemist. All of these dubbed animes have given me an impression that a dubbing can be just as good, if not superior to a subbing. I simply detest having to read subtitles, it takes away from the experience for me.
Momentum139 7 months ago
@flectz, I don't know why, but somehow, having this argument while this song was playing felt... fitting. :)
Momentum139 7 months ago
@flectz
K-on is my favourite anime, I just watched the first 7 minutes of the english dub and TBH I can't see what you mean; it's better than most. They kept the songs in Japanese and a lot of it was translated literally, although it may become a little messed up later (like writing the kanji for pumpkin on your hand and eating it, rather than person) only minor changes, it doesn't look so bad =\
bannanatree 6 months ago
@bannanatree if you have anything more to argue, we'll continue it in the messaging system. But I'm not going to spoil this beautiful song on a dubbing vs subbing vs morality vs conceptions vs personal point of view argument by slugging it out. Please don't misunderstand my evasion for cowardice.

Was it lyrics or sound effects?
bannanatree 6 months ago
@bannanatree i forgot, i watched k-on so long ago, i know yui said it while poking something
flectz 6 months ago
@flectz
Ah yes, it sounds like a poking sound :D
Well, no it may not have the same effect, but it will make sense and she can either not poke or just say something else when she does, there's no problem there, as I said an extremely minor change. She may even SAY Puni Puni, just as the songs are still in Japanese, and she refers to Nodoka as "Nodoka-Chan," it's clear they're keeping with the Japanese terms, the dub looks very good. I wouldn't WATCH it, but it looks well done, I just prefer subs.
bannanatree 6 months ago
@bannanatree I generally prefer dubbing to subbing as I believe any anime director's intent is to couple the idea being expressed in both audio and visuals, so having to take my eyes off the animation to read seems inherently incorrect to me.
Not that I'm trying to flame here, I just thought to give my stance as I was appreciative to read yours - that not all sub-lovers are elitest pricks - and I would like to commend you for keeping your comments civil and grammatically correct. Thank you.
xjxm 5 months ago
@xjxm
Hey, thanks man, yeah I see were you're coming from. Although for me it's just natural, I don't miss any of the visuals through reading and I even read it out in an English voice in my head; when I'm not watching a sub but hear the audio I realise how... Japanese it sounds :D Like when I realised that every time they say 'Luffy' in One Piece they're actually saying "Roofy." TBH I've never watched a full anime in dubs but I plan to soon.
bannanatree 5 months ago
@bannanatree Well, if there's any anime I can recommend to start with, it's Cowboy Bebop.
xjxm 5 months ago
@bannanatree You can start with Baccano. Absolutely stunning dub voices. They nail the accents down perfectly (most of the cast has New York/Italian-American accents). The Japanese actors simply don't get the accents down, reducing the immersiveness.
Scrinoverlord 5 months ago
@Scrinoverlord Baccano is kind of hard to get into. It takes a few episodes to start making any sense. :P
No question about the casting, though. The English dub is spectacular, and gives such life to the entire cast of characters. And for Baccano, that's a hell of a thing to do!
Goatmon 4 months ago
@flectz
Yeah, I agree there too. I don't think there's anything WRONG with dubs, I think there's something wrong with people who say everyone that watches subs without even speaking Japanese feels superior - I don't neither do most (and if they do his scope was far to wide and encompassed people who genuinely don't.)
