"And my last ditch, was my last brick... Lent to finish her".. MY God, that line haunts me so.. You can never imagine what it's like to come home to find the one you love the most has taken her own life.. I died that day, too..
@roo7227 dude. the song is about a bird that hit his window and it broke its neck and he put it out of its misery with a brick then went to his basement and wrote the song. But really a song means whatever you want it to mean rock on(Y)
@TommyChong101 Ahh, that may have been the inspiration, I don't know.. But I do know what "my last ditch was my last brick" means, and it ain't about a bird, trust me.. I know exactly what it means, and trust me, you NEVER want to find that out like I did..
@roo7227 im sorry for your loss. i was just saying that chris actually said in an interview it was about the bird hitting his window that inspired him to write a song about the harshness of love but yes ill carry on being a music snob. im going to see soundgarden friday i hope they play this:)
I may have tapped into something here: It happens when the solo starts. They feel bad for the bird because it is a beautiful creature who follows it's own nature to it's own demise. Much like suicide. But that's ok because life is beautiful and to be celebrated. Even if something sad happens. There is joy in sorrow. I felt that in this solo. I don't know why.
You know, I kinda wish Chris would have done some more subdued vocals on a few tracks like this.
Now don't get me wrong. i love the super belting he hits on all his records, and am blown away each time I hear it. But there's something really natural when he's just using his baritone, and I think it would be something that added a little more to his vocal foray. Simply amazing.
@35TCK I couldn't agree more. His high notes ar amazing, but his singing in his lowest register is just...otherwordly. I absolutely love this version because he just keeps singing in his low range (the album version of this song is amazing too).. This is also the reason I love 4th of july :)
@Lawldudz Yeah, his low range is unique. It's very moody, brooding, heavy. It's hard to make the hurt in this song sound authentic, I think Cornell's the only one who can pull that off.
Yes, this absolutely a fantastic song. And like a lot of people posting on this video, I was a lone Soundgarden fan in a Lil' Wayne world. They were truly a unique, badass, smart, slightly crazy band and when they finally found their voice, they never had two similar songs. Listening to their later albums is like listening to the best mix tapes your friends ever put together....
@ronthefisherman1 God doesn't anyone buy CD's anymore... if you look in the album booklet it's "lived like a murder", not martyr. It also says it in the tab book for Superunknown and it's what it sounds like when he's singing it.
And just to comment on the below apparently it is Martyr i looked it up and for the last 15 years or something i thought it was murder too. Either works lol.
I love when I get on soundgardens utubes and they have like 9000 veiws but lady gaga prolly has like 30 mill this worlds coming to an end quick....open your ears ppl like suicide acoustic fuckin amazing
What a beautiful beautiful song its always been one of if not my favourite sound garden song but the accoustic version definately gives it an extra something, thanks for posting!
I dont like talk 'bout this ...anyway, I decided 2 share with U, people:
My little bro was listening the Superunknown CD, a cold and dark night in october 5 1999.....That night "He lived like murdered and died just like suicide".
When I hear this song, I know he listened it before he pulled the fucking trigger. I still crying his dead. RIP Carlos. Spirit in the Sky.
@BanOxyCred I'm really sorry to hear that. I friend of mine took his own life around New Year's Eve. Right before he did it, he posted lyrics to Boston's "Hitch A Ride" on his Facebook page in reference to what he was about to do. I love that band, album and song but it will never be the same again for me so I know exactly how you feel. I'm so sorry you, or anybody, has had to go through something like that.
Something that has always bugged me, I dunno if anyone noticed, for whatever reason Chris has a very distinct lisp during the first line of the second verse... it is quite obvious in fact.
He obviously does not speak with a lisp, and even appears to correct the lisp at the very end of the said line, exactly at the word "sweet".
But right before the word sweet, he says "taste so sour, had to think of something..." with a purposeful lisp.
@MrJoeCage I don't disagree -- he is an amazing guitarist. He isn't playing on this track, however; while this is credited here as Soundgarden, it's actually just Chris Cornell.
@laquerhead024 It probably is, but those guitarists are probably Chris Cornell & Chris Cornell. He's credited solo on the original. I'm sure album liner notes specify, and it could very well be Kim Thayil, but I don't think it is.
The abysmal Black Hole Sun solo doesn't help Thayil's reputation. People really need to hear the original Like Suicide to get the real picture. Unfortunately, he doesn't play on this one (it's just Cornell).
This version is so much sweeter than the original, even sans the sweet guitar solo. I've still got Sounds from the Superunknown buried somewhere -- need to find it so I can rip it again; my old rip is crap.
@MrJoeCage Just an FYI, Kim was voted guitarist of the year by Rolling Stone the year Superunkown was released. Kim would be much more renowned if Soundgarden had released a few more albums on the level of Superunkown, Don't get me wrong I love Soundgarden but, Superunknown is defintelt their masterpiece.
Why can't I get this on i-tunes?!! Looked & looked but can't find THIS version. Would pay dozens for this one song...
