while this is smoke, it's really nothing to be alarmed about. this kind of thing, while unfortunate, happens all the time. there isn't anything anyone or the airline can do to prevent, it's just one of those things that just happens. the best thing a pilot can do is land, and I commend the pilot for his decision to divert to SFO. again, this was not the fault of US Airways, this type of event happens on every airline. And BTW, there has never been a fatal accident involving an A321.
This sort of thing happens all the time, but unless there's a crash you won't hear about it - it's just not newsworthy. Anyone who thinks this is a US Airways problem is a complete moron. Google 'smoke filled cabin' and you'll find hundreds of examples. Oh, and as for the idiot talking about US A321s - I assume you have examples of all those US A321 crashes? No? What a surprise.
It would not help at all, the masks only last 12 minutes, it would be a total waste of time. Plus, the introduction of extra oxygen could actual make the situation worse, as there could be a concealed fire somewhere. Adding oxygen to a fire is a bad idea.
There would be no point dropping the masks to help in this situation, as they are only used in the even of a decompression. The supply of oxygen from these masks only last 12-15 minutes. They will have set procedures to follow in the event of a smoke filled cabin. Such as adjusting the cabin altitude level to help increase air flow rate through the cabin to help remove some of the smoke or fumes.
@MultiTorte The masks are no good in a smoke filled cabin, as they provide a mix of cabin air and oxygen. They would not filter out the smoke, plus, introducing oxygen when there may be a fire on-board is not a good idea.
@43fatfax They use to say, say a prayer when you fly US Air. But anybody that gets aboard an Airbus owned by US Air is risking their life especaily the A321 which has more crashes than you would want to know about.

Holy crap! 2 hours is a long damn time to sit in a smoked filled plane. I would have lost my mind! Did you ever find out what caused it?

Did you get any compensation by US-Airways for this incident? Could US-Air quickly organize another airplane to bring you to Hawaii?
