Depends on the game. With Half-Life, it was possible to replace the voices only because there was no need for lip-syncing. A game like Skyrim would be possible, but it has nearly 5000 sound effects and over 60,000 lines of dialogue that you'd have to do the lip-syncing for. It really just depends on the game engine and how it handles mouth movement.

I extracted the sounds from the GCF file to the correct folder and overwrote them with my own sounds. I figured it out totally on my own, so I shouldn't have to help you any more than that - it's more help than I had when I started this 7 years ago.

Sentences.txt only includes strings of separate wave file spoken by human grunts and the announcement system as well as some other miscellaneous things. I don't really know how it works too well. There may be tutorials on it. All I did was some basic switching around of words.

Uhh...

That voice isn't pieced together or synthesized. It's a re-recorded single line. You can't just edit somewhere and have it say something different. I don't mean to be rude, but that is a pretty silly question to ask if you actually thought you could change what anyone is saying just by editing that file.

That was the one rulebreaker. I decided it would be funnier to add an actual toilet flushing sound (that wasn't there in the first place) to the audio clip than to either not have that sound at all, or to create a foley sound with my voice - which wouldn't have necessarily even been recognized as the sound of a toilet flushing.

I did it very occasionally over a period of a few years. I could've done it in days if I'd wanted. The lip syncing is actually taken care of by the game itself - it just adjusts how open the mouth is based on the volume of the audio clip.

Look at valve/sound/sentences.txt. It has all the sentences from the PA system, HEV suit, Grunts, and more, and it's totally modifiable. Have fun.

@Therealguymins In HL2 and its based games, it's just you open up a GCF file with GCFScape and add sounds to the REAL folder (or create one named 'sounds'). And then create WAVs with the same name as those in the folder. The folder is gamename/gamename, not just gamename
