@Yelegdir It was NOT a white frat that started and nor was it any other student group at UCSD. The event was created by an LA based rapper who had a party at San Diego.
wow, you guys don't understand. I don't think they were saying that they want professors hired purely based on their ethnic background, only that the administration should attempt to diversify the faculty so that all people feel comfortable on campus. I go to UCR, and it's the most diverse campus in America. I'm white, and there, I am a minority. While I have friends of all different backgrounds, even I felt a little awkward at first. The black community is completely justified in their demands
It's really sad how the actions of a few ignorant individuals. There is no "growing racial undercurrent" at UCSD. I do feel that many students on campus have not been exposed to many African American people, but faculty should not be hired based on race. Either way, most students are accepting of all races, and most of them are definitely not racist. Many people (mostly minorities) make shallow racist jokes, but they are not hateful and this phenomenon occurs throughout the country.
Faculty hiring, along with hiring of other disciplines, should be based on merit, not skin color. By hiring based on skin color discredits a faculty's competence.
Sara Kaplan (the lady in the video) was one of my first professors. She was terrible. For an assignment we had to take part in a protest! I'm heavily conservative and was a little ticked about it. From going to her office hours and seeing her interactions, she was very favorable to Black, Latino, and Gay students. She pretty much is stuck in the past and so full of affirmative action shit it was disgusting.
The black and Hispanic students were being racist towards Asians, because what they were demanding was in fact to cut down on the large Asian student population and accept more minority students.
Hire faculty members by their racial color or hire by their potential performance? Hmm. I'd rather pick the latter. This is America. You want to dream, you work for it!
Yes, because a minority does something racist automatically makes the whole university racist. That's pretty much the argument of people these days. No matter what university a person joins, there will always be someone who screws it up whether its racism or any other forms of hate.
This is blown out of proportion. Even if the university had more african american faculty and students the cookout would still take place. But, the media loves these kind of stories because it stirs controversy and raises ratings.
Lastly: anyone calling for the disbanding of the ethnic studies department at any major university is just fucking retarded. Do some research and look at students from the last generation had to go through to get ethnic studies into large, hegemonic white oriented institutions. So students of color are to go a black college if they want to learn about African American studies?
You have no idea what kind of can of worms you'd be opening if you got your way Boazhorribilis.
@vsehere: asking for equal representation is completely different than asking for preferential treatment. These students do not feel welcome at there own school because there is an inequity between the racial composition of the student body and the racial competition of the faculty. They're not claiming racism in the hiring process at ucsd, they are calling for the U to make an effort look at a few more professors of color. EX:40% of the student body is minorities, but >5% of the tenured faculty
People like to pretend that racism got a train and left America. People of color and white people see racism through two very different paradigms. When people of color speak about racism, whites tend to consider it "playing the victim," or "complaining." Then a documented act of racism like at UCSD occurs. Instead of admitting there is a problem, whites like to paint a mutual equivocation between racist acts and black comedian's jokes. Your argument is null when ur using a comic as a resource.

This whole thing is completely idiotic. So, a black dude organizes an event that pokes fun at stereotypes. So what? Dave Chappelle makes fun of black people to a much further extent than the party did, so is he a racist? Give me a break.
One of the unsaid, yet ubiquitous issues at the UC schools -- with Berkeley, LA, & San Diego being the most competitive -- is that Asians are very competitive. While no more than about 10% of the over-all California population, Asians represent 30% to 55% of the UC's undergraduates. My little brother, a straight-A student, skipping 4th grade, was denied admission to Berkeley, so he grudgingly followed me to UC San Diego. So it's really somewhat of a "zero-sum" game situation for many... sadly...
Growing up in a Roger Hedgecock, Republican city, in the mid 1980s, UCSD was one of the few places I felt safest, as a minority. It WAS undoubtedly the most liberal & progressive place in southern California. I cherished my years there. Now, 2010, a noose was found in one of the libraries? Jesus! And to think I used to walk all over campus, alone, late at night, from Revelle (I woked at the cafeteria), all the way back to the Warren Apts past Central Library, cutting through dark bushes...
I think that it is retarded that you would hire african american faculty so just that there are more african american students. This is a huge misconception, and it does not matter what color you are and Martin Luther King Jr. even said that he had a dream that his children could go to a school with different races and it does not matter what ethnicity you are to be a faculty member all that matters is that the faculty member can do their jobs RIGHT and have the best potential.
it is ridiculous to even make such a big deal out of this!
These people just had another opportunity to demand some extra privileges and benefits. If you people scream about equality, be equal! Don't try to get or have more than others! The USA is called the country of opportunities for a reason! The opportunities are there, you just need to work hard to get them instead of complaining and demanding stuff just because you think you deserve it!
I've been both an undergrad and a grad student at UCSD, and this incident is an isolated event. The black students and the media are making it seem like it's more of a problem than how it actually is. I looked at the list of demands that the black student organization published, and it's fucking ridiculous. It just reeked of delusional self-entitlement.
it's only an important issue if the person, deems it important. When they had the party, it was subconsciously acted upon. The evaluation that arise after, bring awareness to people. People don't get angry just like that. It's because that it's important to them personally, that they would act out upon it. Otherwise, people wouldn't necessarily have such strong emotions.
This is why I feel most black kids should really look into going to HBCU, not to be so separate but so that they can focus on education and not all this other stuff.....I FEEL that most black kids that do go to HBCU are so successful, and have great college memories.
This kind of blathering just keeps going on for decades now. Punish the idiots who initiated the stupidity, send back the little pricks to class or send them home, do away with the Dept. of ethnic studies ( what BS is that???) send the prof back to get a real academic diploma. The univ. would not be better off if there were more black faculty, unless they were qualified to teach a real academic discipline.Universities should be developing talent of all colors, should not be social clubs. Period.
@Boazhorribilis Dept. of Ethnic Studies is a recognition that stuff like the English Dept. or Political Science Dept. run usually by whites, caters to whites and teaches largely, almost wholly about whites. In that light, taking Ethnic Studies out seems like it'd be encouraging ignorance.
@Boazhorribilis I guess you don't know the events that actually happened on this campus otherwise you'd understand why these ADULTS making these other ADULTS of COLOR should learn tolerance. It's not okay to live somewhere while learning and always have to be looking over your shoulder and if you had to let it be because some hates people period, not because they hate a certain kind.
univesity of california seems to be full of hypocrites they seen to say theyre raically sensitive but everywhere i look seems to be just a campus of intolerance, people need to grow up im tired of hearing about the racial shit grow up get along or shut up!!! dont flip out everytime theres a kkk style hood on campus or a noose drawing, and why do they always jump to the conclusion thats its white people escalating this kinda stuff, it could be a black person trying to get shit started grow up!!!
@Seekthetruth2010 Racism is a serious issue and nothing you should just "Grow up about" and there a lot of history behind as well, KKK was a horrible racist group.
@Angelofrock09 who gives a fuck about the KKK anymore they dont have any political power they have been proven to be a bunch incompetant idiots, and if you or anybody still fears them them even the slightest then you are an idiot, the ones you should be worried about is islam, they can not all muslims are terrorist but most support the attacks they do and they have political power enough to do whatever they want for retaliation if it criticises islam the kkk arent the problem its islam
its comments like that that show there is a struggle and a problem. Homophobia, Racism, Sexism, Ableism, etc are all prevalent on our campus in the little comments. That needs to STOP NOW.
Check yourself, just because you're behind a computer doesn't mean you can spout bigoted bullshit.
Turns out a "minority student" put up the noose and a "minority student" was behind the "ghetto party" lol. Black racists on the march at UCSD. Dept of ethnic studies major = No chance of employment.
These people are making a mountain out of a molehill just to try to get more money for their departments and student orgs. It's just cynical media manipulation.
@DerSchnurrbart imagine coming home from work and finding a noose hanging in your living room would you just throw it away and forget about it? It's frightening knowing that there are people at your own university that are willing to harm you just because of the color of your skin. were the slaves that were treading througb the rugged underground railroad making a mountain out of a molehill?
The girl responsible for the noose in the library said in the school paper that she was a "minority student" and that it was all a mistake and not racist. There are no people at UCSD who want to harm others as far as I know, except maybe the people who want to beat up the editor of "The Koala."
@allmetaldon let's see...that was a tiny noose was hung on a light; it was not a threat. there was NO ONE on the university who was in danger, that is bullshit. the last real lynching occurred just under 30 years ago, THAT IS A THING OF THE PAST. most black people who saw that would not think it was racist. it stupifies me to think that we have a black president and for some reason "racism" is present in a community that voted almost unanimously for that president.
Do you know anybody that goes there or have you even been on the campus? If not you cant say that. And how many times have you claimed to be joking when you got caught for something?
