This is the first song I ever heard by the Chameleons, it first hit my ears in my 13th or 14th year, and really spoke to a depressed teenager at the time.
There've been The Beatles and other brilliant bands, but the Chameleons are a brilliance of another, higher order. I've just never heard anything quite like them and I don't expect to again. Listening to "Intrigue In Tangiers", "Screaming Rule Brittania" and too many more of their songs puts me in the passenger seat of a Ferrari convertible driving at screaming speeds on mountain roads beside and above the Mediterranean Sea in the dead of summer's night. Close as I'll get.
Yeah i couldn't listen to Interpol after loving The Chameleons most of my life.
I have forgiven them and can now enjoy it as a band who must admire them a lot to want to reproduce their sound so well. Nothing will ever match the beauty of "Script of a bridge".
@thenameisbond Yeah. That's what I think too. Have you seen Vox? If so, what'd you think? I've seen them. It was loud. Good to see Mark and hear the Chameleons songs live, but a bit underwhelming. Maybe it was the venue. I'm still glad I got to see the show though!
Chameleons Vox is Mark on vocals with Bushart (who feature John Lever on drums), performing a full set of Chameleons material.
Although they're not /quite/ the real thing, the general concensus is that the gigs are better than the Chameleons reunion tour from 2000. Though of course, you ought to consider that statement sacriligious :-)
If you can get to see them, do. Even without Reg and Dave, it's still marvelous to experience the whole thing as it was meant to be.
@urckrecords I love Interpol's first album. I love the Chameleons. I love Joy Division. I didn't really understand all of the Joy Division comparisons. When I first heard the Chameleons I thought "This is who Interpol sounds like!"
This as way cool! Great sound for this time. Forget the comparisons to U2 because these guys sound like they could have taken over the world!!! And how is it they did not? Great band though...I'm shocked I just found out about them!
What a great song. I wouldn't compare the Chameleons to U2. There are some superficial similarities in the minimalist guitar-playing that you hear in the two bands, but that's about it. The Chameleons, especially during this period, had a much darker, more intense sound than U2.
You get quite a few people on here saying they should have been bigger than U2 or something. While The Chameleons at their height were amazing (I saw them live once in the early 80s and was knocked out by the performance) I dont think they quite had more than a few outstanding songs. Brilliant live band.

@MrChameleon2010 Vox is Mark Burgess. I can only assume that there is some copyright issue w/ using the original name.

I saw U2 in 1982 and they were horrible. I never saw the Chameleons but I know they were a far superior band.

What made Burgess a great vocalist was his great vocal timing and melodies. I dig his lyrics too.
