ok guy's let's cut the guy some slack. I know he did say "breaking in" but, he also said "the 2nd start up". I know it sounds like the 1st start up may have had some problems but, maybe the 1st start up was the break in period run.
first of all, a bottle of break in additive is not enough. i always use break in oil, like joe gibbs, or royal purple break in oil because of the high concentration of zinc and phosphorus. and those types of oil recommend to drive on that oil for a short period of time, and a maximum of 2500 miles.
okay for one thing, camshaft break in period takes at least 20 minutes at 2000-2500rpm, not a few revs on a stand. if your gonna post a video, make it right dude
Why waste a running SBC, even if it is a 305? Used to be a running SBC always had a 2 or 300 dollar value and were always easy to sell. Have not sold one lately, but am sure they still have value to someone and i'm not rich enough to blow them up just for fun. Maybe if it already had a knock or smoked real bad or something.
If you ever wanna sell the oem intake manifolds off the 305s I would be interested. I would be looking for the casting# ending in 055 & 057. Theyre usually sittin atop of 80-85 305-350s :)
LOL people ar epissed cuz they cant comprehend what they read!!!!!!!!Engine Blow Up Stand Breaking in a 377 SBC..MEANS THE STAND WAS MADE TO BLOW UP ENGINES BUT ALSO SAYS BREAKING IN A 377 MEANS! HE IS USING A STAND TO BLOW MOTORS UP HE ACHULLY BREAKING IN! A MOTOR you people gota find sumthin better to doo....
Revving ya engine 3 or 4 times aint gunna do fuck all mate, dude's dreamin if he thinks he's breaking that engine in, just drive it normally man, 1000km or so, change the oil, then off you go
@FordMan2007 I agree 100% revving the shit out of a fresh engine just trashes the bearings, timing chain, rings, and god knows what else. Thats why you dry crank a fresh build with oil in it on a starter motor for a few hours, to seat the bearings & rings. Yeah lets go spend $2500.00 building an engine and fire it up for the second time and rev the shit out of it over and over .. dumb ass.. I wonder if it made it 1000 miles before he broke a ring or spun a beraing..?
@edcrabb Yeah mate I can tell ya if I ever built an engine in any of the workshops i've worked at then proceeded to do what this guy does (rev it up while seating bearings), the boss would most likely kick me up the arse
@edcrabb I've built and raced many SBC engines. The first thing I do after cam break-in is change the oil and filter, drop it in the vehicle and take it for a full, "peddle to metal" run to maximum redline in every gear. If you built it right, it will hold together
@kenzo5716 i have to disagree. when you use break in oil during a camshaft break in period, especially on a flat tappet cam, you need to keeep running that break in oil for at least 500 miles because of the high level of zinc in the break in oil. changin the filter is good though. and i would definitely not take it to redline right after break in lol new motors need to have light loads and constantly changin rpm, not high rpm and high loads. just saying.
@Grovers357SBC My comment comes from building over 200 small blocks successfully. No you NEVER run break in oil for 500 miles. It's full of metal tiny shavings and other debri from the break-in period. You should NOT run original break in oil for more than one hour after break-in. If you (or whomever you hired) built the engine correctly it will run to peak rpm without failure. Use a high zinc. phosphorous oil like you're supposed to. I use STP for assembly lube. Never a failure!
@Grovers357SBC Listen, if you are concerned about using break-in additive for 500 miles, at least change your oil and filter after an hour and then just simply add another bottle of beak-in lube. No problem.
@edcrabb i have to disagree with your idea of cranking the engine over with the starter for a few hours. that will most definitely flatten a camshaft if it is brand new. the break in period is designed to allow the lifter to keep spinning in it's bore, rather than move up and down and wear a groove in it or the cam. that is why camshaft break in period are from 2000 to 2500 rpm, because it is keeping the lifters spinning in it's bores. i would not recommend anything you just said.
@starguard Agreed, and probably 250 have never actually pulled an engine down and actually rebuilt it. Most have changed the plugs at most, and read Hot Rod MAG, watched YouBOOB videos and think they are a Mechanic. I am a ASE mechanics, built more than 20 SBC engines for pro stock racing in my life and built more than 1000 engines over all. I think I have a bit of a clue how to break in a fresh build, and it sure as hell isn't what this moron is doing.
@edcrabb You are ASE mechanics? Do you have multiple personalities? Just kidding, i agree, there are too many wanna be "mechanics" who read books and articles and think they can work on cars. I've even seen people who graduated from an automotive tech schools who were dumb as dirt about actually working on cars! It comes from experience. Personally, i would'nt bother with a stand, break it in installed in what its going in.You got to put it in anyway, and driving it is always a good break in.
@jerywilliams LOL!! Why yes I do have multiple personalities, I am a Mechanic, a Plumber (Not Bob), a Carpenter, Electrician... Thanks for the ribbing I deserved that one. If your going to go on here and bitch about a post I guess you should proof read yours before posting it huh .. LOL!!
@edcrabb I just could'nt resist that one. You sound like me, jack of all trades.Problem is , I'm a master of none! I get by though. You sure can save a helluva lot of money not paying those so called "masters" to do all those jobs, mechanic, electrician, plumber, carpenter, etc..
I had a guy here on the tube say it's good to destroke because they rev faster and he was building a mud truck and i would think big tq at low rpm's are what you want for a truck. Why would you want an engine that needs to run at hi rpm's to make power for a heavy vehicle?
@truedeadman Yes i agree. That's the goal, with out wheel speed you got nothin but you need torque at lower rpm and still be able to rev to very high rpm's. If your trying to turn 44's you most importenlty need torque after that hp to keep them rollin. All the big dogs that are mud boggin use strokers. Cut up trucks with very light wieght are a whole different story. That's the rule. My reason for commenting is noone detrokes. Everyone runs strokers. Dyno #'s say it all.
I agree. I need to learn more about the 377's. I still think they are perfect for lighter vehicles that you would want the to rev to high rpm's. I would think a S-10 would be perfect for one. Although Mercruser has a 377 boat engine they call scorpions and that has to have some serious torqueto be a boat engine and that would go against the destroked theory. A stroked big block or 383 should be better.
Correct me if i'm wrong but a 377 is a destroked 400. That would be a 400 sbc with a 350 sbc crank. I've been seeing a trend of guy's building these engines for trucks and i don't understand why. I would think a destrocked sbc would be a high revin high hp low torque engine and what torque the engine made would be at a high rpm. How is that good for a truck?
@hpjunky70 I had a 383 in a 85 c-10 and it would boil the tires even with welded spider gears and large M/T drag radials. I am building a 350 280 mega cam for it now with topline performance heads old style rpm manifold and holley 750 dbl pumper w/long tube headers. Got a 3000 stall convertor and 373 gears. A 377 sounds interesting. I knew a guy that had one in a 63 chevyII wagon. It really hauled... good luck!
@hpjunky70 Yes it is a 400 with a 350 crank and you better have a machine shop that knows what they are doing. I would rather stick to a 400 or 406 which I have.
@DRidgway1 I'm with ya.I don't know why anyone would destroke in the first place. No one runs them around here and i'm sure there's a reason for it. Everyone i know are just boring engines to save money and if they can they stroke them. Everyone is runnin mud boggers and that's the best thing to do as far as i know. Even the guys w/prostreet cars around here are runnin stroked BBC. I thought the 377's were LS engines but i guess there's a lot more to it.
@DRidgway1 the prob with 400ci block is the bores are Siamese / joined in the water jacket stoping water from flowing right round the bores ,, we found the 400 block suffed from blue hot spots at hi rpm in extreme conditions on the cylinder walls the speedway chev sb motors we build back in the late 80s we used the 350 4 bolt block with 400 crank/rods . 383ci , was best combo, i run one for years in a 2300pound street car at 11.8 1/4 mile cast iron heads ,was a blast , fuel was cheap !
Love the comments every one has . The 377 ci is a strong high rpm engine . A well Balanced engine is capable of handling just about anything you put it threw . For those of us with engine building and Balancing experience . We let the shade tree mechanics gloat . They always call wondering why their engines expire in the first 5,000 miles . we take pride in any engine that goes out our shop . For that GO BIG OR GO HOME .
I envy you your concrete floor. I have fabricated a similar device from an Iguana 1 rail bike trailer, Summit Chevy engine storage stand, and an electric fan cooled Griffin aluminum radiator. I used the trailer 'cause 3" casters make great anchors in a dirt floor. : )
is a 377 honestly any good in a daily driver truck is it more of a racing application with the shorter stroke and such. I dont know anyone whos ever built one
Hope that you don't have a hydraulic camshaft in that engine because that is NOT how to break in a camshaft or an engine for that matter! 28 Year Master Technician
@charles81265 What is he doing wrong? I have fabricated a similar device for the same purpose. Will be starting my newly built 383 in a week or so. Hydraulic flat tappet RV cam. I've added 4oz ZDDP specifically to preclude premature cam wear/wipe issues.
@charles81265 The old Z28 302 had a 4" 327 block with a 3" stroke 283 crank. It would spin 8000 RPM all day. Longer rods can be used, too. Usually limited by valve springs inability to handle anymore. A beehive spring would help that situation. 307's had 283 block and 327 crank, torque motor.
Now , things get really funky with Ford big blocks. 460 block with a 428 crank is I think 504. Go the other way and a 360 truck crank in a 460 is a 396 Ford, one never made. that motor will go 8000+ RPM.
@jacktheripped Check Speedway Motors on the web. You can pick up a "Rev Kit" fairly inexpensively. With those springs to push the lifters back, the only additional recip weight the valve springs have to deal with are are the rockers and pushrods. Spin it to the moon. : )
@MrGroovy888 WOW your the fucken loser it is a sbc its a 400 with a 350 crank and 30 over think befor you post somthing fucken dumbass u prob drive a honda anyway
@killyoutoobwatcher3 Fuck you redneck the only thing about bore and stroke is fucking your sister. And by the way learn to spell before you call some one a loser. Inbreed mother fuck.
I will give you a like. You seem to have your fair share of haters out there. To all them, give the guy a break. This vid's a lot better than any of the other stupid trash people put on here.
@DrMMHMD Damn. Another thing Dad lied about. Varying speed, hills etc was supposed to be all good. You would think a load would help everything but maybe cam break-in. Thank you. Seriously.
@DrMMHMD I think you are both confusing "TEST" stand vs "Break-in" stand w/a water brake type dyno?. Maybe? Before I jockey/shoehorn/torch and curse....I'd spend a few hours mounting up a TEST stand. Be it a motor fresh from the machine shop, but most especially a junkyard engine! No load= not alot of ring sealing. But, you can spot problems a mile away w/a quicky stand like this. OK, group HUG! MmKay?
as a mechanic my self i cant see the point of running it in on that stand as the engine needs load to fully bed in properly... you seem to just be free reving the engine. hardly a brake in at all now if you could put load on it and make it work harder a litle bit that would be cool but anyways nice engine stand
that sounds sick what kind of mufflers do you got hooked up to it in this vid? i like for my car to sound like that haha awsome vid man you know yer engines
@guerrillaexec that would be because it is a break in stand! if u werent so ignorant and read the description, you can clearly read that this stand is for breaking in an engine, they just happen to blow up engines for fun on it, noob
pretty damn cool. i sold my 66' chevelle malibu wagon and found out it was worth waaay more than i sold it for.factory, 10 bolt posi, camelbacks 2.02, air pump, gauges, and 4 speed car with 327 375 horse.i heard that it was actually a yenko.i feel like an idiot.good luck with yours.
@cameron197040 you say a lot of nonsense - come on over and let me skull fuck some sense into you buddy. i will say toodles whenever i fucking want to , 100 times each morning - makes my teeth white, whiter than you LMAO
@lanceyoakem caue this guy is a desperate attention seeker with no life.Just like a harley ass hole that revs his engine at a stop light and looks around to see who is looking.Just another fag with loud shit.
My 377 bored30" so now it's a 380ci- 4.155 bore with a steel knife edged 350 crank.
Scat 6" rods, Edelbrock Performer RPM heads with 195 cc runners but they been race ported and flowed 271 cfm @ 650" lift, with a COMP 294H with 1.6 roller rockers......My engine builder says it should make an easy 530 H/P.....I'll be happy with that.....Yours sounds relly nice dude...!!!
If you put that engine tin that chevelle, you need to put that tunnel ram from the engine thats already in the chevelle. It looks bitchin with that. Its a beautiful car dude. Dont ever sell it.
awesome motor! Q: why run old iron heads if it isn't rule-restricted? After rebuild, port, and valve job, they are more expensive and flow a little less than modern aluminum 190's.
@melon5me the thing is he doesn't even have a house, to have a garage to put a car into it, much less a worked engine to put into it, im sure his 13 yo ass, is still begging mommy to buy him a car. he says fail because he thinks hondas are better than everything, we call that ignorance and arrogance, he makes our job easy when he walks around with a dunce cap on, his comments really tells any respectable person "ignore me, i know very little and what i do know, is narrow minded, and one sided,"
I have no idea. It's my 1st 377. Scat Crank, 6.0 inch rods, KB flat tops, Comp 292H cam, 2.02 64 cc. fueler heads and balanced. My machinest says roughly 400 HP. I just hope it's faster. :)
@melon5me I had the same cam and heads on a 406 with 10.8:1 CR, and 5.7 rods. Dropped it in my little bros. '82 monte carlo. Later swapped in .516" lift flat tappet crane cam, and a 750 double pumper holley. With 3.73's it'd run 12's with street tires, a full steel bodied "nothing stripped," street car, and pump gas. Elevens would've been easy with just slicks and a 4.56 gear.
ok guy's let's cut the guy some slack. I know he did say "breaking in" but, he also said "the 2nd start up". I know it sounds like the 1st start up may have had some problems but, maybe the 1st start up was the break in period run.

Now , things get really funky with Ford big blocks. 460 block with a 428 crank is I think 504. Go the other way and a 360 truck crank in a 460 is a 396 Ford, one never made. that motor will go 8000+ RPM.
jacktheripped 3 months ago
@jacktheripped Check Speedway Motors on the web. You can pick up a "Rev Kit" fairly inexpensively. With those springs to push the lifters back, the only additional recip weight the valve springs have to deal with are are the rockers and pushrods. Spin it to the moon. : )

@DrMMHMD Damn. Another thing Dad lied about. Varying speed, hills etc was supposed to be all good. You would think a load would help everything but maybe cam break-in. Thank you. Seriously.
hutch1200 7 months ago
@hutch1200 Yeah, dads lie, especially when they say "I'll see you later". They also never tell the truth about vaginas.
jerywilliams 3 weeks ago
when we build engines we test and run-in on a engine dyno at work its what ive been taught since an apprentice at trade school
tcollogan 7 months ago
@DrMMHMD I think you are both confusing "TEST" stand vs "Break-in" stand w/a water brake type dyno?. Maybe? Before I jockey/shoehorn/torch and curse....I'd spend a few hours mounting up a TEST stand. Be it a motor fresh from the machine shop, but most especially a junkyard engine! No load= not alot of ring sealing. But, you can spot problems a mile away w/a quicky stand like this. OK, group HUG! MmKay?

as a mechanic my self i cant see the point of running it in on that stand as the engine needs load to fully bed in properly... you seem to just be free reving the engine. hardly a brake in at all now if you could put load on it and make it work harder a litle bit that would be cool but anyways nice engine stand

guerrillaexec 9 months ago 27
@guerrillaexec that would be because it is a break in stand! if u werent so ignorant and read the description, you can clearly read that this stand is for breaking in an engine, they just happen to blow up engines for fun on it, noob

pretty damn cool. i sold my 66' chevelle malibu wagon and found out it was worth waaay more than i sold it for.factory, 10 bolt posi, camelbacks 2.02, air pump, gauges, and 4 speed car with 327 375 horse.i heard that it was actually a yenko.i feel like an idiot.good luck with yours.

Dont ever sell it.
shawnkrause871 1 year ago
awesome motor! Q: why run old iron heads if it isn't rule-restricted? After rebuild, port, and valve job, they are more expensive and flow a little less than modern aluminum 190's.

bravo3000pirate 10 months ago
@melon5me the thing is he doesn't even have a house, to have a garage to put a car into it, much less a worked engine to put into it, im sure his 13 yo ass, is still begging mommy to buy him a car. he says fail because he thinks hondas are better than everything, we call that ignorance and arrogance, he makes our job easy when he walks around with a dunce cap on, his comments really tells any respectable person "ignore me, i know very little and what i do know, is narrow minded, and one sided,"

carb sir.
KawiKZ400 2 years ago
You should put an absorber on that, water brake for example.
It's not good for the engine to rev without a load.
baldurTV 2 years ago 2
it is not going to hurt the engine a bit. Your not putting 3000 miles on it just 30 mins to break in the camshaft.
k9forkids 2 years ago

That sounds sweeet :) Nice car that its going in to as well...What about the motor that's already in it though?
scott93257 2 years ago 3
The 327 is going in a 1928 Model A Roadster Pickup. The Tunnel Ram is staying with the Wagon.

Ahhh yes Beautiful :)
scott93257 2 years ago
I like 377's they rev to the moon. Whats the redline going to be for this one?
rompn4x 2 years ago 3
I have no idea. It's my 1st 377. Scat Crank, 6.0 inch rods, KB flat tops, Comp 292H cam, 2.02 64 cc. fueler heads and balanced. My machinest says roughly 400 HP. I just hope it's faster. :)
melon5me 2 years ago 7
Maybe in the 450 range. That motor would be a terror with some AFR 195cc heads and a roller cam. Probably peak out close to 7k rpms
rompn4x 2 years ago
@melon5me I had the same cam and heads on a 406 with 10.8:1 CR, and 5.7 rods. Dropped it in my little bros. '82 monte carlo. Later swapped in .516" lift flat tappet crane cam, and a 750 double pumper holley. With 3.73's it'd run 12's with street tires, a full steel bodied "nothing stripped," street car, and pump gas. Elevens would've been easy with just slicks and a 4.56 gear.
