Love this series. The "But *please* do not let me influence you," at 1:50 reminds me of Terry Pratchett's Vetinari character saying "Don't let me detain you" XD.
@lidlehotti3 Apparently when Holmes is thinking he just plays random, discordant notes. He can play violin perfectly well and indeed in the Study In Scarlet he plays a violin lullaby to Watson to send him to sleep :3
God Watson's writing is huge. He must have a word count of 6 words per line, as opposed to my 12 or 13
i have to laugh at watson's title 'the brook's street' mystery being shunned ('i guess it will suffice.') by holmes: the portuguese version was called exactly that. :D mind you, the titles are usually translated straight out, but this was one of the ones that the title was different.
I watched the drama once again, did you notice that ,at the very beginning Holmes, played his fingers as playing the violin in the barber, and it is just Beethovan!
Besides, why did that servent open the door to allowed those Russians enter in?
I like the change in music here. Holmes is playing quite a sorrowful sounding piece of music while Watson deliberates over the title of the story. As soon as he writes down the title Holmes suggested, the music changes to very upbeat and cheerful. Almost as if Holmes knew what Watson was thinking!
Hahahaha, I loved the ending.... while reading the books, I always loved the little domestic introductions Watson would have, where Holmes would be plucking at the violin or just zoning out, curled up in a chair. Maybe it's just Watson 'romanticizing' the cases, as Holmes puts it, but that's 100% ok by me XD Love these two
@jamiewithers Oh, I don't know, I like them both... David Burke is certainly the more energetic Watson, but then again, his Watson is younger than Hardwicke's as his is after The Great Hiatus and al the stresses of supposedly losing Holmes and the years ahead... and Hardwicke, I always felt, was the more kindly Dr. Watson to others of the two- both had their strongpoints...
Wow and with all that paranoia Sutton never thought to get a better door and lock for his bedroom. Or to just load up his chest of vaulables and leave town.
In the first part of this episode Holmes says exactly what it is "...third movement of Beethoven's violin concerto..." The detail description would be I think "Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61"
i LOVED the subtile way of superimposing the violin playing and Watson's choice of titles!! As one gets more euphonic, the other gets better... And it was one of the best adaptations among the series, I think.
Apparently Jeremy Brett in his younger days had a speech defect that prevented him from pronouncing "r" correctly - he overcame it through therapy and assiduous practice. Guess he tended to overcompensate as a result!
- Daddy, so that's how people used to write, with paper and pen, no computers?
- Yes, son, that's how they did it.

Watson wants to work and Holmes is sawing away at the violin. And he has the nerve to act like WATSON'S inconveniencing HIM! LOL
Watson has just been forced to remember Rule #1 when dealing with Sherlock Holmes: Sherlock Holmes is ALWAYS right!

My favourite scene is when he says "what's wrong" to Watson....Superb acting!

I think David Burke made a much better Watson than Edward Hardwicke. He has a lot more expressive face than ol' Ed.

Did anyone notice the shapes of the T's when watson was writing the titles? The first was different from the next 2.
sparrowgirl25 2 years ago
Yes, but he probably wrote the first title carefully, and obviously more slowly. The word 'Street' is exactly the same.
