  • so how does it work with both Rod and Phil being principal? Who plays what part? Do they both play 1st trumpet or does Phil and Rod switch between 1st and 2nd trumpet? How does the whole thing work?

  • @moorebaroque they split roughly 50:50 - so if Rod is playing First, Phil is off, and vice versa. Although at the moment, because very sadly another of our trumpeters passed away in November, you might see them both in the section at once, the one not on First covering whichever part is necessary.

  • No doubt in that Rod has no chance to 1st if he was playing with Phil... He is god, but not that much... REGARDS

  • This might sound dumb, but I'm pretty sure having a mustache helps with trumpet playing. Haha

  • @7:02- OMG as a trumpet player I know it's hard to play those huge intervals with such fluency and huge sound!

  • He has just taught me something I have never learnt from any conductor!

  • As a conductor and man of music, I can only congratulate for this wonderful demonstration of teaching art. The Brits still remain the best in didactical matters. I learnt more in this 8 minutes about music and style in performing music than in all my life putt together. some ot Mr Franks' remarks are just amazing: they really explain what performing music means. Great. Post more.

  • Why is he playing low E with 3?

  • Why is the playing low E with 3?...

  • @timmytank No from any highschool....whats wrong with your ears man? I would be fired if i sounded like that

  • Dear Helmet. I am a youtube helmet police officer and it has been reported to one of our team that you are a helmet and are making helmetish comments. There are some forums online and chat groups available specifically for helmets such as yourself. I suggest you visit websites such as imahelmet or helmetsanonymous where i think you will be more at home.

  • These LSO masterclasses are fantastic. Thank you all for taking the time to do these!

  • Nice Yamaha sticker!!

  • So many words about 1 bar that doesn't sound the way it should be. Nice yamaha sticker. Try a Bach for the better sound....

  • @hansloenjr You're obviously in highschool. How you focus on playing bars depends on the music. Also, I think you are comparing Bach's $1,000 horns with yamaha's $1,000 dollar horns. His horn is closer to a $5-7,000 dollar horn, at which point it is all personal preference. All horns in that price range will be top quality. Any reduced quality in sound is a result of him blasting directly into the microphone. Don't be an idiot, he is one of the world's top trumpet players.

  • @timmytankTK I am not comparing anything....and i am not a idiot. Just don't like his sound as i am allowed....

  • @hansloenjr You should try and know what you are talking about before you go posting around. Just a little hint.

  • @KentPVA . Well i do know.....but thanks for the advise

  • @hansloenjr Oh sorry, how many years have you been playing trumpet? and which orchestra do you play with?

  • Fantastic! I would love to see a master class on the opening solo to Pictures at an Exhibition - Promenade. The LSO does this particularly well, I find.

  • is that a Yamaha trumpet??? just joking! great playing, great movie, great teaching, great symphony indeed....

  • What about Phil Cobb... isn't he Principal too?

  • @drummerbambi yes he is. The LSO has two Principals for every section.

  • Thanks for posting this and stuff like this! Being a musician, I love getting inside an orchestra as much as possible.

Smart move embracing this new media instead of shunning it like many do here in the U.S.

  • how come in high school, we never have to worry about the tone of the instrument, the acoustic properties of the environment, use of mutes, air support, tuning slide during playing, and alternate fingering?... I guess that's professional musicians for you.. haha

  • @alankace In my high school, we worry about all of those things.

Then again, I go to Denver School of the Arts.

  • Well, Yamaha certainly wanted the world to know that Rod plays their horns....

  • @kotetsu131

It's probably for advertising purposes only, ive seen in the the actual symphony, he plays a silver one, which is most likely a Bach Stradivarius im thinking?

  • he was principal trumpet for 20 years?

    Isn't it maurice murphy?

  • Hi foodmore, in the LSO we have two Principals for each instrument, and they job-share. Rod and Maurice were Principal Trumpet together for 20 years; Maurice for 10 years before Rod joined. Rod was once a pupil of Maurice's!

  • Very interesting indeed.

How about some string featured Masterclasses please?

  • very very good teaching!!!
