  • I have heard that the Colloseum was built w/ the booty taken from the sacking of Jerusalem. I wonder if that is true.

  • @VictorLepanto It is true. There was an immense store of wealth in the House of the Holy Place aka Jewish temple in Jerusalem. In fact, there was so much wealth sent back by the Jews that King Herod the Great transformed Jerusalem from a cow town into a destination not unlike Mecca today.

  • @EdM021: would you have any sources I could access for that, maybe from some Early Church Father? It is fascinating, the Jewish Talmud actually says that the Messiah has gone to Rome, & he sits there w/ many wounds bound up w/ bandages. His disciples sit there w/ him, & they are also wounded w/ their wounds bound up like him. Also, some took stones from the Temple, after it was destroyed by the Romans, & clad them on the upper room. A strange connection b/t these things.

  • @VictorLepanto The immense wealth? Jewish War 6.4, 6.5 & 6.6. Herod's building projects cam be found in Antiquities books 15 & 16.

  • @EdM021: No. I wasn't talking about the wealth of the Jerusalem Temple, I know quite well how magnificent it was. I was hoping to find a source for the report the Colloseum was built w/ the Jerusalem booty. I would find it highly significant if the martyrs of the Colloseum were killed in place built w/ the wealth of the Temple.

  • @VictorLepanto From the UK Guradian: telegraph (dot) co (dot0 uk (slash) news (slash) worldnews(slash) 1311985 (slash) Colosseum (slash) built-with-loot-from-sack-of-Jerusalem-temple (dot) html

"Imp. T. Caes. Vespasianus Aug. Amphitheatrum Novum Ex Manubis Fieri Iussit."

The translation is: "The Emperor Caesar Vespasian Augustus had this new amphitheatre erected with the spoils of war."

PS I also heard that the "upper room" was clad or constructed with stones from the Temple.

  • looks lika a good program.

    wish I could hear it.
