This video was taken when Ray was still a baby at less than 2 years old. He is now about 5 years old - a toddler! They live from 60-80 years when well cared for.
If you listen to any other Macaws, you will note they all usually have a very similar voice with very little variation other than regional accents. Other parrots, especially like our African Grey Kota, will often have the ability to very precisely mimic several different voices. Also fyi - Ray has never been DNAd so we don't know for sure if he is a he or a she so a "girl" voice may be right on the mark!
lol, Such a silly bird. It's always fun to teach them new phrases. My grandmothers Congo says "Help let me out, I'm a prisoner." and she grumbles along to old phone conversations.
He is so sweet and clever!!! And Your African gray!!! "What about some water"?:-) The parrots are the most intelligent animals in my opinion!! I adore them!!
Ray knows what he is saying and how to get what he wants by saying certain things - he only asks for potatoes when I am cooking potatoes. My gray regularly says "I wanna come out" and then rattles the locks or "How about some water?" when his water bottle is empty. They are extremely smart!
for the longest time i refused to believe there were actually people with this accent, i was convinced it was an invention of television to depict stereotypical tourists "oh heiy der yah, don-chano?" ect. then i met someone from wisconsin. and then i just couldnt resist- i went to minnesota with a texan friend of mine, resulting in epic lulz.
First: WOW! Someone that can actually reasonably imitate a southern accent! Awesome! Though really, that's more Georgia than Texas. Second: I wasn't mocking you, nor do I think Texans have no accent, quite the opposite. That was, in fact, my reasoning for bringing him along. I was merely observing that there are two "northern" accents, and that yours is the more uncommon in my experience. :)
It's all cool. We have a thriving Hispanic migrant population and several different Native American communities up here mixed in with old school Scandanavian folks like my FIL - someone who actually pronounces north as "Nort" - it all makes for interesting and spicey listening.
Oh Red! Ray is awesome! Our Midland will be 2 in July. His vocabulary is no where near Ray's. He can say things like, come here, gimme kiss, hi, Midland, pretty boy, and some other little things. Have any recommendations on how to increase Midlands vocab??
We talk to our birds just like we would a child in the house - make a big deal when he talks rather than yells and you will get more results too. Try (hard as that may be) to ignore yelling - not everyone in the house has an easy time ignoring that yell though. lol. Just get as excited as you can when he talks or even sounds like he is saying something - respond to every attempt "Oh really, and then what?" was one of Ray's first whole sentences.

I bet if you say Dog instead of another two syllable word with the ie or y on the end because they sound too much alike to something that has no sense of English just sounds. Try Dog and Duck very different.
Ray is going on 3 years old. He is a joy to have around, smart as a whip, but screams when he doesn't get his way. We take the good with the bad - thats just Ray.
We have a Scarlet named Pippin(she's about 8 months) that loves to watch Ray ;)She also occasionally screams when she doesn't get her way; or her Ray video! LOL
Watching other birds is the best way for them to learn new things. Ray learned some of his words watching Diego on YT. Watching on YT is the cheapest and cleanest way for them to learn - lol!!!
Go to my page link - you will see a list of info on owning a parrot. Some of them seem like I'm joking - but it's all pretty much true - HOURS of work, ear splitting noise, damaged household goods, lots of mess, huge expenses for the next 40 - 60 years. If you can happily commit to that madness, then by all means you SHOULD get a parrot - or a lobotomy. lol.
He's a good talker. We have a Blue & Gold and my husband taught her to say "Redrum" from the movie "The Shining". It's pretty funny. I love it when your bird says "I see you!" Very, very cute.
He is very talented. How old is he? Our 13 yr old has a pretty good vocab, he doesn't do it on command. However, our little African Grey is listening in the backround and saying "peek-a-boo" right now! She's never said it before, Thanks Ray....
Ray is a 2.5 yo second hand parrot. He certainly rivals our Grey in speaking ability and its all a game to him. The Grey is too proud to do something as lowly as speak on command - lol
We adopted Zachary about a year ago. He had been reliquished two times before we met him. He is 13 years old. He had lived at the sanctuary for 2 years this last time. He is a wonderful Macaw, he just needed the right kind of love.
Ray loves animal sounds as much as he loves showers. He learned the "What does the Duckie say?" bit from watching another bird (Diego - GW) on YouTube.
Thats the freebie software we used back then. Adware embedded. Ignore it
