It would be cool to wear a helmet and go to work, riding in a passenger car, subway or on a motorcycle. And see how it reacts to their business people involved ..... This is a joke.
My favorite is the one at 0:20, but i dont know the name of it could some one tell me...oh and if youve played assasin's creed brother hood the super heavy armoured dudes where that helmet or a variant of it you should check it out.
No.1 is called a s, it is optional for the viser, instead you may decide to link an aventail to the helmet, which is a coif without a hood. at 00:26 that is also another Bascinet, if you look carefully at the side and back of the helmet, there are either small holes or brass knobs which are used to link and aventail to.
At 00:32-33 that helmet is called a Sallet, it is optional to have a bevor with it, a bevor is a semi gorget, and a gorget is a steel neck brace. At 00:51 that is a Barbuta.
I've been looking for a certain type of helmet that I see in a lot of High Middle Ages References but I have never figured out what it's called or where to find one. Most recently I saw it in 1952's Ivanhoe. He wears it under his chainmail as a sort of liner for his great helm.
It's circular but flat on the top. It's like Museum Replica's Transitional helmet without the faceplate.
Does anyone know what it's called or where I can find one?
@Bullets4Brains6 I dont know the name, but i do know it was fairly common to wear a another, smaller helmet underneath the great helm. try emailing an armoursmith, he ought to know.
@Dracoti The name of the helmet you are thinking of was called the 'secret helm' it was similar to a ww2 British paratrooper's helmet, it had no brim, it was simply a bowl.
Yeah it's exactly like that. I wish this thing would allow you to send links I could show you. If you go to google images and type in Ivanhoe 1952 there's a picture of Ivanhoe wearing it in the top row.
@Bullets4Brains6 that part is a mail coif... it is put on a padded hat ..... on that did a knight put a great helm... later were used early versions of bascinet and finaly a bascinet with visor..... it was also there to make more layers of protection when the great helmet was penetrated or when on footcombat as protection istead of great helmet that was unpractical(they did put great helm down when in footcombat....)... i dont rly know other name than mail coif....
we know that bascinets where historical and the visors (if fitted) could theoretically be improvised to serve any purpose.
it is the dome you should take note of, thats what gives it away.
further, the title was meant to let people know that these are metal helmets for medieval combat etc. I am aware that there are some fantasy/inacurate helmets included as was my intension to do so.
@Dracoti The discs were meant to cushion blows on the temple area of the head. They were bevelled outwards and had a little give to absorb some of the impact. This helped keep the fighter from being knocked out or even seriously injured from a strong blow.
though having these would negate any blows glancing of would it not? I suppose a horizontal strike is not going to anyway, though vertical hits will... sacrafice one thing for another?
If theres any other information you would like to add please do :P
I cannot say anything about their armour but their weapons are surely not the best. Most of the swords are for reenactment, means heavy and innaccurate weapons for for maxmimum reliablity wich cannot be realised in real sword.
I prefer Lutel and Albion who make real weapons with good balance.
nice selection! i particularly like the barbute with the sallet visor from 0:57 to 1:01. although there is no evidence that this particular helmet ever actually exsisted, its seem logical to make a helm that still provides good protection when the visor is raised.
yu must remember that they all come from different time periods and for different purposes (but all to protect your head ofc).
i admit, there are a few that i cannot clasify, but ''intimidation'' was more of a bonus, you wouldnt sacrafice it over protection.
though i think it's more at home with larp...
if you would be a soldier on a medieval battlefield and on your right is an evil looking dude, and on the left a normal looking fella, who would you attack or avoid?
At 0:27, i have that helmet, mine is not the same as that one, bit its the same style, Bascient, and i must say beleive it or not, it has good vision, and if you are still looking for a helm, try ebay, thats where i got mine and its actually high quality 18 gauge
i prefer the sallet but without the under piece

The far majority of these helmets aren't medieval. Most of them are renaissance close helms, burgonets or barbutes.

An interesting mix of good replica's of real helms (& possible even some genuine articles) and pure 'fantasy/SCA' helms :-)

it's a bascinet with a duelling visor (sword).
don't know what the disc's are for though.
