I've been listening to this album a bit now, the first time in years and years. The main thing I notice is that it sounds more like Megadeth than Metallica. Mustaine seems to be the dominant force on the overall sound. It wasn't until RtL that Hetfield came into his own. I suppose this explains a bit more about why Dave was really kicked out. It had more to do with being the dominant ego and songwriter rather than kicking Lars's dog.
