for college hands down get a MacBook Air. You bring it to class and get it started in 20 seconds from powered off. Its fantastic! I got the fully upgraded 13" and LOVE IT!

wow man, this is not a fair comparison at all, this is really unhelpful because people want to compare the pure macs out of the box, of course people can upgrade the pro and obviously its going to be better but this was just really showing off how powerful your pro was....

Yes we have the expensive Digital SLR cameras at home but why is it I have 1,000 photos on my iPhone 4? Because it the camera that is always with me. Portability should be considered when comparing MacBook Air to Pro. Seriously to consider the return on investment means how much will I actually spend using said device? Get a small zippered slip cover with handles for the MBA and your new best friend will always be with you!
Unless your going to be seriously doing a lot of high end video editing or major heavy duty graphic work rendering I'd say take it light and easy and get the new 13.3" MacBook Air! You will find the portability factor enables you to want to use your machine in more places than you would previously consider lugging a heavy laptop around. The solid state SSD instant on will also make for quick on the spot power up computing a dream!
I bought the stock 11" for my mother because I thought it would be better than an iPad, and it's perfect for her. I thought hard about buying the 13" Air for me but I just can't do it. Not as it is. I know and appreciate that Thunderbolt is FAST but there's no external drives that I can use with it yet. I currently have an iomega ego mac edition and I use it over firewire 800, it's quite fast over that connection. That's my timemachine disc. The Air won't let me use it, there's no firewire =/

if you have a lot of emails and constantly travel, the macbook air will suit you. if you have serious development work, you would need the imac or 17" or 15" macbook pro and an Ipad for the occation.

@MacOSXMason No. Processor does not directly affect frame-rate in games. That's dependent on the graphics card. That's why the 2010 MBA could play games just as good, if not better than the current 2011 MBP/MBA.
The Nvidia n320(right?) is better than the integrated HD3000 that comes with the current models. Getting the i7 over the i5 won't help you here.
This comparison is simply silly. Try to compare a basic macbook pro 13" and a basic macbook air 13". Pumping the macbook pro with the vertex 3 fakes the comparison. Be serious.

Downloading things and the online side of gaming depends on your internet speed, gaming in general goes to the Pro due to faster processor and ATi graphics are largely supported by many games, both laptops will do video editing, and data transfer is based on what your using to transfer from, a firewire port will transfer faster than usb 2.0 but thunderbolt is soon goin to be integrated to many external hard drives, supposedly transferring at 10GB per second. I don't see the point of comparing the Air to the Pro. Obviously the Pro (w/ your vertex drive) is going to blow away the Air. Sure its interesting to watch just for curiosity's sake to look at the numbers. But it would've been the same to just do a review separately. Even a Air vs stock Pro would've made more sense.
I have been debating these two for a good while. I can to a pretty firm decision and wanted to share my consensus.
For the price of the 15" MacBook pro with the upgraded dedicated GPU (HD6750) and an aftermarket ~256GB SSD, you can get a 13" MacBook Air AND a nice Sager 15"workstation laptop with the 4GB MORE memory 1920x1080 Resolution display AND a GTX 560M dedicated GPU which is roughly 25% more powerful than the 6750 the MBP comes with as well as the exact same processor (not a mac though).

The Pro destroys it from a performance perspective, which is understandable, but the Air is certainly a convenient little device to have handy and has enough punch to satisfy most general purpose users (media, web, office, apps, etc).

I don't see the point of comparing the Air to the Pro. Obviously the Pro (w/ your vertex drive) is going to blow away the Air. Sure its interesting to watch just for curiosity's sake to look at the numbers. But it would've been the same to just do a review separately. Even a Air vs stock Pro would've made more sense.

I have been debating these two for a good while. I can to a pretty firm decision and wanted to share my consensus.
For the price of the 15" MacBook pro with the upgraded dedicated GPU (HD6750) and an aftermarket ~256GB SSD, you can get a 13" MacBook Air AND a nice Sager 15"workstation laptop with the 4GB MORE memory 1920x1080 Resolution display AND a GTX 560M dedicated GPU which is roughly 25% more powerful than the 6750 the MBP comes with as well as the exact same processor (not a mac though).

mac book pro in other tests there is an SSD, but this test did you use a SSD, is obivio the mac pro would be faster.
This test was very biased.

The Pro destroys it from a performance perspective, which is understandable, but the Air is certainly a convenient little device to have handy and has enough punch to satisfy most general purpose users (media, web, office, apps, etc).

i'd buy an ipad instead of the air, cuz for people who want their photos, videos, and internet with'em the ipad is the way to go. The ipad does almost all of the things that the air does, so i guess it's the customer's choice.

@jotiw1 WOW, lol your kidding right? Ipad doesnt even play flash, good luck with that. And theres no USB. Ok fine, there are ways you can get it but for the money, ill stick to a laptop. There's a reason why there are laptops and touchpads....theres a reason.
