I read that Deanna auditioned for the voice of Snow White (Disney), but didn't get it because W. Disney found her "too professional" sounding. She was great, of course, but he wanted a more untrained feel.
@Glambert345 because judy stayed at MGM and carried out her fate as one of the most fortunate and unfortunate legends of the entertainment industry. Deanna was dropped, went to a different studio and was not subjected to the lifestyle Judy had - a good life, but not the same type she would have had if she stayed at MGM
I happen to love classical music and I'll say this, the musical style that Garland affects in this short is much more naturalistic than that of Durbin's.
@SatchmoSings I take it from your screen name that you understand that Judy is singing from the influence of the Black American Blues and Swing idiom. 80 years later it comes across as more "naturalistic," but in 1936 it was not as widely accepted, particularly with the older generation and upper class society whose standard of singing was closer to Durbin's European approach. If MGM had kept Durbin instead of Garland, they would have had a totally different history.
@DreamsCumTrue469 What you had to say, especially towards the end of your post was most observant and also most prescient; yes, jazz 'n' blues and also the technology of the microphone which made "crooning" a reality was not so old when this short was made.
Indeed, as influential as the American idioms discussed were so widespread, there is still a very strong element of what you described in European pop music to this very day.

Judy Garland was terrific - I love watching her classic movies. Her voice was powerful and jazzy. But I have to say Deanna is my favorite because her voice was capable of handling a HUGE variety of styles, from opera to the more popular sound of the day. Deanna is not fat in this movie. Vengeance509 is being nasty. I like both Deanna and Judy, and do not feel the need to trash one in order to praise the other.
"Drop the fat one," Louis said, "Durbin's built like a backyard shed! Worst of all she's got no verve, and Judy cleans her clock with nerve. Durbin trills, but face the fact: A thousand girls got that same act! Phony opera is so boring; Deanna is an aid for snoring." Louis B was right that day. He made The Durbin go away. Dee Dee had one decent flick. Judy? DOZENS! Mighty quick. And when the nutballs dare compare, remember Durbin's eyebrow hair.
Givened this is a screen test for Judy and Deanna......it seems to me Judy got more dialogue, more camera presence and a better song. Deanna ......just sits pretty. Unfair.
@ziggycat999 i have to disagree. They both did what they do; it's not as though Judy could have sung Opera or Deanna could have sung swing. In fact George Sidney said he was instructed to "keep the pretty one" so they told Judy to stay, but in fact they were reffering to Deanna, I don't know how much truth there is to that but things could easily have been different.
@daimdar Not quite. Mr. Mayer told the secretary to "drop the fat one" and the secretary thought he meant Deanna. On the up side, it was the best thing for both of them and the public. Deanna eventually quit show biz. Judy made MGM the most money of any MGM star in the 1940s. And we were - and still are - blessed with Judy's extraordinary talents.
@daimdar Actually Deanna did do Swing/Jazz also and did it very well-check out her performances in Something in the Wind, The Turntable Song, among others.
Charlotte Church and Heidi Westenra, eat your heart out. They had nothing on Deanna Durbin. Even at this young age, there is a purity and maturity to her singing that they could never have matched at the beginning of their careers (or at any point in their careers, really).

I'm sure we all have our own prefernces and should probably respects each other right to have the same.
This is a wonderfu short film. Judy is charming and a great singer, as always. She was one of the true American icons. A great singer and a great woman. We miss you Judy xo.
MGM made the right move in not renewing Deannas' contract. Although she's very talented the latter 1930's and '40's didn't have a demand for an opera singer for MGM movies. Can one image Deanna cast in 'The Wizard Of Oz' or even 'Everybody Sings' Judy was the best choice!

Hey "jerrysbro"...
You know you've been dancing around your dreary apartment, with a feather-duster up your ass, caterwauling Deanna Durbin tunes as you attempt to clean window sills.
I'll bet you shatter glass (but only with your ass) when you hit a High C.
I haven,t seen many films of Deanna, but I know very well the work of Judy. Here I can see both of them. And I,m amazed to find how different and talented they are!!, yes Deanna is the classic type, and Judy the new style. But both deserves the fame and aclaim of real stars. Deanna saved Universal, Judy saved MGM. no doubt. Carlos
thank you very much!!..I love movies, and I,m always collecting things. It,s amazing how many things we can learn in youtube, seeing this gems. THANKS AGAIN!!
They both had talent. Why must everyone try to compare? Judy was more Pop style, Deanna of course more Operetta. That doesnt mean one is better than the other.
You are obviously psychotic, as evidenced by your unreasoning, obsessive hatred for Deanna Durbin,a woman who probably never did you a bit of harm. If Judy Garland was still alive, she'd probably have a restraining order on you-you sound like one of those "true fans", like in
Lots of red herrings in everyone's logic or lack thereof. Both Judy and Deanna have merit. There's plenty of room for both. There isn't a comparison between them. Each had their own sound and contribution.
Glad their contributions can be viewed on You Tube.

Deanna Durbin was one of Hollywood's biggest, most costly FLOPS.
She had a few hits in the 30s and then failed to transition to adult roles. At her own studio, she was smothered by Abbott & Costello by 1941. By that time, Judy had been on the Box Office Top 10- list twice already. Also, in the War Years (1941-45) Judy ranked # 9 out of ALL stars. Durbin never made a list.
Deanna Durbin was begging for scripts by '42, and they gave them to her: crappy scripts.
Deanna was old school. Judy was the new sound. It's that simple. Deanna was classically trained and Judy was a Hollywood torch song singer/ showbiz chanteuse. It's no contest. See how in this clip JG starts out with the straight waltz and then swings it in an odd time signature? That illustrates the difference between them. In Hollywood someone has to play the soubrette roles. Deanna Durbin was still a real artist.

Deanna Durbin's First Three Flicks Were hits among the Country Hicks. But after that her Movies Tanked, Her name each turnstile Rudely Spanked. Universal had invested, Yet Dee-Dee couldn't get arrested! She thought she was so sleek and snooty... and couldn't half-compete with Judy! Garland's films were each immense while Durbin's bombed and made no sense. Yes, Durbin was just one mere "blip" On filmdom's fleeting radar clip.
A stupid, insipid piece of doggeral that shows an inability to appreciate a superb voice and beautiful actress. I can tell you have no taste! (Too bad people like you can't understand true art.)
vengeance509 -- methinks it's time for your weekly enema; you're brimming with loathing (and maybe fear, too!). It's time to ease up and recognize talent, instead of posting fake quotations ...
And DON'T say "Deanna was the highest paid star in 1947 (or 49)!"
That's toad-water.
It's well-known that Universal pumped-up her salary in 1947 in a final, ill-advised attempt to drum-up publicity for the washed-up Durbin, but it was useless. Garland was actually earning far MORE via MGM's weekly salary + per-picture bonuses, and Durbin's films kept flopping...leading her studio to sue her for that "lofty salary" they attached to her in '47...which tells you that it was one big gimmick.
buh. Durbin was a fresh and BEE-U-TEE-ful talent, and she made her mark with the 'Three Smart Girls' flick early on, and then 2 or 3 pictures after, but then her style faded. It wasn't entirely her fault. Universal didn't develop versatility in her art, and gave that woman SHITTY scripts, even for musicals. Deanna was a brief sensation, but never a major force in Hollywood, like Garland. She deserved more, perhaps, but they gave her crappy material through the 1940s and she bombed constantly.
For Russia Deanna Durbin was and still is the most honoured and loved american singer of 20-th cent. Her works on stage did more fruitful things to draw together Americans and Russians then great politics of that time. Thanks Deana and thanks you for uploading this video!

Good grief. Durbin has no truly great box-office stats, so her loony fans have to make-up ridiculous, unverifiable myths wherein she "saved isolated Russians" like some Bridge to Nowhere. Ha!
What's next? Deana Durbin brought all the Eskimos of the World together in one Song of Igloo Harmony?
She Calmed the Penguins of Anarctica?
Durbin charted only one song on the charts, ever. She NEVER made the Quigley Top 10 Poll. She was displaced at her own studio by Bud & Lou in '42.
Durbin's a very nice singer. But she sounds like any Opera Singer to me ..... And Judy is just soo much more peppy and energetic and adorable. And she was indeed the better choice for MGM. Plus, back then, they needed someone more modern like Judy with her 'swing' instead of Deanna's opera.
i think they already knew they wanted to keep Judy before they made this because she has most of the talking parts...personally ia m glad they kept Judy...i love her!! she is always gonna be my fave!!!
I was thinking the same thing. In addition to having more lines, there are other little things you can notice. Like right before Judy sings her solo one of the musicians looks at the sheet music and exclaims "Real music!". Then during her song you can see the people in the audience all having a great time and people running for the seats in droves! It seems like her personality just shines through much more than Deanna's. I think they made the right decision in choosing Judy, though.
Both are good. Personally my favorite music is classical so I adore Deanna Durbin. It is a shame that she isn't remembered today as she should be, she really had it all.
Film for film, Judy Garland squashed Durbin. Durbin had a couple of films in the late 30s and then she took a nosedive. Garland became...well, Judy Garland. It's funny--certain people post in places like this, saying that Durbin was "queen of the musicals" and/or "Deanna was really big in Russia!"
So were pork pies.
\
Deanna's films in the 40s generally flopped, which is why Abbott & Costello replaced her pretty quick.
Judy was box-office GOLD. Look at her numbers. HUGE, from 1938-1950.
Objective facts tell a different story than you did. Judy Garland had a legendary career due to being in the public eye for 4 decades and having been at a studio suited to her talents.
In point of fact, Durbin was the greater star in box office returns until Durbin's retirement in 1948. She had an infectious, one-of-a-kind naturalness and range that was all her own. She hated show business and has kept a tight lid over her private life. Check her videos on YT and see.
Facts? What facts? Durbin was bigger in box-office returns? Not even CLOSE to Judy. Not even in the same league. Durbin's box-office bombs were NOTORIOUS. she had a few hit films, and was never in the Quigley Top 10 poll (as Judy was, three times), and Durbin was only ~twice~ in the top 25 in the ENTIRE '40s. Judy was Top 20 EVERY year. Besides, film for film, Judy's box-office returns always, ALWAYS dwarfed Durbin's. I swear, Durbin's fans live in some weird FantasyLand.
THis is JUST wonderful!!! I remember seeing this on tv a few years ago and i couldnt remember what it was called...Thanks SO much for putting this up!! Both gals are just exceptional talent that is under appreciated today!!
YES i love Casablanca another great classic..!! I think one of my FAV's is Buck Privates Abbott and Costello plus the first apperance of The Andrews Sisters!!! Yippy
they both have amazing talent, but judy is just so infectious. her eyes light up when she performs and she is just wonderful. if you were to mention both ladies' names nowadays, almost anyone could tell you who judy garland is, but most people probably have never heard of deanna durbin.
I can't believe they told Judy she was fat!! :( at this age thats crazy!! She doesnt look bog to me at all!! And she is 14 years old people come on!! haha
How people can say that trash like Britney Spears and Madonna have "talent" after hearing true singers like these two girls is beyond me--whatever happened to real talent like this?
I imagine there are talented female singers out there who might be on the same level as Judy & Deanna but they'll probably remain anonymous because it seems as though the majority of people today want glitz, good looks, flashiness, etc. It's what you look like and how you project yourself, not how talented you are. I guess it's true that Hollywood just gives the public what it wants but from the looks of things nowadays, they don't care much about true talent!
i have not heard this!!! i am soooo gonna have to see this...i hope Anne does a good job at her...I know Kristen Stewart is playing Joan Jett in a Biopic and she looks like her but she is not a great actress so idk...but yeah i am excited to know a biopic is coming out for Judy...she is my all time fave actress and singer!!!
Going by the historical reports that can be found (much of it contradictory), it would seem that MGM based its decision to drop either Deanna Durbin or Judy Garland on the screening of an "Exhibitor's Reel" featuring the two young girls which was produced before EVERY SUNDAY. The story goes that Louis B. Mayer decided to drop Judy, but studio officials misunderstood and dropped Deanna by mistake!! I would imagine that Deanna would of been Dorothy. Anyway, history can't be changed.
By the time EVERY SUNDAY was filmed in July 1936, Deanna Durbin had already been signed by Universal Studios on the 13th of June. But a clause in the MGM contract gave that studio the right to call on her services for up to 60 days following her termination providing she wasn't making a movie at her new studio. As THREE SMART GIRLS wasn't scheduled to begin production until September, Deanna found herself back at MGM performing in EVERY SUNDAY with Judy Garland.
Deanna was more European ,Watzing and classy educated,Wagneriana (she still is)...Judy more jazzy swinggy yankee gesundheit hamishpaja Brooclyn ,tin pan alley and jewish pessach
Deanna Durbin was at one time the highest paid female star in the world and was more popular even than Garland. Today Judy is more popular because her movies are more readily available. But at the peek of their careers, Deanna was the preferred star. Also she walked away from movies at a very young age. She I believe, was the most talanted of the two.
When I see this it's very hard to give performers like Beyonce and Jessica Simpson the benefit of the doubt. How nice to see superior singers who aren't swinging on a pole or falling out of their dresses.
Both are great, just different singing styles..but I still am amazed at Deanna's ability to sing the way she can. Lots of women can sing like Judy, some better, but to master an operatic voice is the ultimate in vocal ability...the most demanding of any style.. Poor Judy, fell into the trap that Deanna knew was the way of Hollywood...ironic and sad
I found your comment very contradicting. i fail to see the difference between , some better, but to master. Mrs, Garland went there an back with that comment. And lived it!
acutally it is rare for a young girl or any woman...espiecially now to have strong longs and have a contralto singing range. that's rare. I think both of the talents, are hard to manage. many girl would always sing high and judy with her voice was amazing. from the lowest to the highest voice.
is this safe for boys to watch? will it adversely affect there developing hormones?

My own prefernece is for Judy (her iconic status today proves that she was not just classy but in a class of her own). I do however admire Deanna. I'm sure we all have our own prefernces and should probably respects each other right to have the same.

I dare because I have seen all of Deanna's many films, some dramatic, some operatic, but all tasteful and welll acted.
I have also seen all of Judy's films, she has great talent for belting out rhythmic, high tempo numbers, but as previously stated...NO CLASS!
You have your views, I have mine...live with it!

This is a wonderfu short film. Judy is charming and a great singer, as always. She was one of the true American icons. A great singer and a great woman. We miss you Judy xo.

Class (Deanna) versus crap (Judy).
Deanna grew into a beautiful, talented and classy lady.
Judy, well, she remained a song belter who lacked class.

I haven,t seen many films of Deanna, but I know very well the work of Judy. Here I can see both of them. And I,m amazed to find how different and talented they are!!, yes Deanna is the classic type, and Judy the new style. But both deserves the fame and aclaim of real stars. Deanna saved Universal, Judy saved MGM. no doubt. Carlos

Lots of red herrings in everyone's logic or lack thereof. Both Judy and Deanna have merit. There's plenty of room for both. There isn't a comparison between them. Each had their own sound and contribution.

She faded like sunset.
Vengeance509 2 years ago
bullshit.
hobnailrose 2 years ago
Deanna was old school. Judy was the new sound. It's that simple. Deanna was classically trained and Judy was a Hollywood torch song singer/ showbiz chanteuse. It's no contest. See how in this clip JG starts out with the straight waltz and then swings it in an odd time signature? That illustrates the difference between them. In Hollywood someone has to play the soubrette roles. Deanna Durbin was still a real artist.

Sur ce vidéo Durbin est très supérieure à Garland et je suis une admiratrice de Garland. Le duo réconcilie à la fin. J'espère bien qu'elles ont du plaisir à chanter cela.
SuzelleDeGrace 2 years ago

And DON'T say "Deanna was the highest paid star in 1947 (or 49)!"
That's toad-water.
It's well-known that Universal pumped-up her salary in 1947 in a final, ill-advised attempt to drum-up publicity for the washed-up Durbin, but it was useless. Garland was actually earning far MORE via MGM's weekly salary + per-picture bonuses, and Durbin's films kept flopping...leading her studio to sue her for that "lofty salary" they attached to her in '47...which tells you that it was one big gimmick.
Vengeance509 2 years ago

jwhiteout 2 years ago

Hullo.

Both have gorgous voices tho. :)

I think they made the right decision in choosing Judy, though.

racheldizon 2 years ago 2
Film for film, Judy Garland squashed Durbin. Durbin had a couple of films in the late 30s and then she took a nosedive. Garland became...well, Judy Garland. It's funny--certain people post in places like this, saying that Durbin was "queen of the musicals" and/or "Deanna was really big in Russia!"
So were pork pies.
\
Deanna's films in the 40s generally flopped, which is why Abbott & Costello replaced her pretty quick.
Judy was box-office GOLD. Look at her numbers. HUGE, from 1938-1950.
Vengeance509 2 years ago
Vengeance:
Objective facts tell a different story than you did. Judy Garland had a legendary career due to being in the public eye for 4 decades and having been at a studio suited to her talents.
In point of fact, Durbin was the greater star in box office returns until Durbin's retirement in 1948. She had an infectious, one-of-a-kind naturalness and range that was all her own. She hated show business and has kept a tight lid over her private life. Check her videos on YT and see.
caraqueno 2 years ago 2
Facts?

Anyway, history can't be changed.
texasoperastar 2 years ago
By the time EVERY SUNDAY was filmed in July 1936, Deanna Durbin had already been signed by Universal Studios on the 13th of June. But a clause in the MGM contract gave that studio the right to call on her services for up to 60 days following her termination providing she wasn't making a movie at her new studio. As THREE SMART GIRLS wasn't scheduled to begin production until September, Deanna found herself back at MGM performing in EVERY SUNDAY with Judy Garland.
