I love them both, and let's be real, Phish circa '95 and '97 was amazing, but recently the jams havent been as inspired, and the songwriting got a bit more simplistic. I've found Umphrey's to be more consistent, but they've been around for much less time. But I'd rather see 2 Umphreys shows than pay 60 dollars to see Phish on a lawn.

But there playing shows an understanding that is profound and subtle ala jazz, as in instead of shredding up and down scales whch is awesome, they 'll pick dissonant notes and change scales in a way that is subtle... so either you want rock (UM) ... or light fusion (Phish)
however, Trey and Phish are masters of pulling in and out of harmony. UM are going up and down scalar patterns very fast and effectively in a way Trey won't do, but it's all straightforward scale harmony.. Trey and Phish will bend your mind with b9 #5's and crazy chromatic passages that dance in and out of the harmony.. After years of studying jazz, I am suprised at how agile Trey's concept is and advanced... like it or not, Trey is more real jazz, Um is more Rock..

Phish used to be a lot better in the early 90s (but Phish is more of a jam band). If you watch their most recent videos and then watch some 1993 or 1994 shows, you'll be blown away at how much they've died down in the last decade ... Umphrey's is more progressive rock but still jams out. They're really not comparable.

yeah, he does. the way kris keeps up with the off the wall improv of jake and the rest of the guys is fucking fantastic. but he does make mistakes (as does everyone else in the band, of course). his are just a lot easier to hear.
well i dig their vocals. I mean of course there's no Al Green on stage or anything like that, but Brendan definitely sings with all his soul, as does Jake. Joel and Kris provide great harmonies, too. i think just between watching for signals and trying to harmonize, myers has a hard, hard time back there. but he handles it like a fucking champ.
phish and umphreys are two totally different acts. personally i think phish is much better, but that doesnt make me love umphreys any less. phish just seems more energetic. not in the sense of power, but more like they have a certain aura surrounding them live. hard to explain but long story short, its all a matter of what type of jam youre looking for.

definately , umphreys is BY FARRR my favorite band on the planet , but i gotta give it up to phish, trey is a beast and he's been in the game for a minute and a half, Just imagine what kind of futuristic funk shit umphreys will be doing in 2020 , no doubt in my mind that they will be touring then ....
