One big reason is that the size of the US military is too large. Spending more than 50% of budget is used on military, which is the reason why American people can't get good social security system, such as decent health care.

Another big problem in the US is the wealth distribution. A large corporation CEO's are taking too much portion of profit of companies. They don't take responsibility of their poor management. They fire employees but they still take millions even if the company is in deficit.

The problem is that the US CAN afford health coverage for all, and that it doesn't, not that it covers the military exclusively. To take away this coverage in any form would invite abuse of the soldiers, ALL of which sacrifice to carry out their mission. This is a non-negotiable point.

Extreme conservativism often leads to dictatorship and extreme liberalism often tends to abuse the human rights by overprotecting some group of people.
