I've been wanting to buy a copy of Watchmen for my movie collection. Which version should I buy? I like watching the documentaries, commentaries, and special features. Is the ultimate version the best for the money?
@jakesmeltz1 Absolutely. Some good features on the Director's Cut but more on the Ultimate, plus you get the Under the Hood short and the Black Freighter short. Also the motion comic is pretty good, for a motion comic.
I don't agree that film is an inferior medium to books(if that's what you meant). There are some films that would not work as well as a book in the same way that certain books don't work as well as a film. The Godfather for instance, is a better movie than it is a book. So is Fight Club, The Dark Knight, Forrest Gump and many other stories.
One of my favorite books and movies ever. I personally think that the movie is as similar to the book as it possibly could have been. in my opinion the fans spend too much time comparing their subjective experience of the novel to the film. I agree that the book was better but i like that you wish to see thr film on its own merits.
Alright, I know you must get asked this every freakin day and I'm sorry, but I'm about to lose my mind if someone doesn't tell me what the intro song is. I looked in the description, profile, I even did a google search for "Bad dah duh ba dah dum" which yielded few results. You cut the intro at the exact moment the singer is about to say something that would be useful in a google search. Bah.
@Geekvolution Wow, that guy does some pretty interesting "children's" music. Thanks for the reply. I can't believe I didn't think to check the credits.
Symmetry man its all about the Symmetry this is something that the film could never achieve also the movie revels in its nostalgia something the book and more importantly Alan Moore never nor intended to do. Watchmen was anti-nostalgia Alan Moore intended to poke fun of the past and recreate something better not long for the so called good old days
i find the book itself very overrated tbh its good but not as good as people big it up to be i enjoy the movie more, im not realy sure why maybe its jackie earle hayley, i rate him as an actor alot
I may have been the one comic fan to have not read the book prier to watching the film. I enjoyed the film more than the book myself. I found the ending to be more believable, and the characters more relatable. That being said, I did enjoy the book and found I got more detail about each character from reading it. Reading all of the internal dialoge and whatnot does make a different in understanding a characters motivations and thought process.
11:10 Herge also said that he did not want any thing Tintin related to be made after his death....don't know if many people have brought that up when the spielberg film was being made.
Overall I enjoyed the film but I think that,s simply because I read the book, throughout the film I was just enjoying seeing the visuals come to life and not really paying attention to the story since i knew exactly where it was going. Don't think I would have enjoyed as much without the knowledge of the book
With DVD and Blu-ray you can revisit scenes like you can go back to earlier pages in a book, which makes the filmed medium more similar to comics in that regard
@Geekvolution True about the theater and being more cumbersome, but the existence of a more interactive viewing medium such as DVD has changed the way movies can be made. How different would Watchmen as a film have been had movie theaters been the only way to see it. DVD allowed Snyder to create a fuller adaptation with the Ultimate Cut, and I think the film was shot with that aftermarket in mind. He probably knew what would make the theatrical cut and what could be added back in
I can't believe it's been up 20 minutes and already there are so many comments...love your show Cap! I never liked superhero movies until I started listening to you. Happy New Year to you and yours :)
I already know I'm going to enjoy the remainder of the review cause of this part. As always great job with being insightful cap, i only wish that i got to finish the graphic novel before the review went up but i'll be sure to get to it later in the week.
Happy New Years Geekvolution, hey I know this might be a weird question but have you guys ever thought of reviewing 300, it is a well known graphic novel that was made into a major motion picture. Plus the Spartans have the incredible power of slow motion to bullet time. Understandable if you wouldn't rewind it but I thought I'd ask.
I had not read the book when I saw the film. I loved it. The story did not seem to sell out, and it was gritty and just amazing. I think it is a pretty good adaptation. The best film adaptation of a book is without a doubt No County for Old Men. Really. Read the book and it is almost word for word, with only a couple parts left out. I look forward to your review j.
I strongly disagree with comparing adaptations with remakes. Translating one film to another film is much simpler task than translating a massive book into a 3-hour picture. Comics may have images but that’s not the same as a picture that moves and make sound that we can hear. The story ITSELF is the same but the process of viewing that story works differently for people like me. Now some adaptions don’t work but only because it was a bad film in the first place.
I don't get why Zack Snyder is always catching crap? He's a damn good director(writing leaves a lot to be desired)! I haven't seen or care to see Sucker Punch because the story doesn't appeal to me, but that doesn't mean I'm going to bash all his films or Man of Steel before I've even seen a second of footage!
So when is the full review/rewind going to be released?
I like the movie and the only way I saw it was the theatrical cut and the last half of a TV broadcast of the Ultimate Cut and I love this movie! I love the book and I do believe this is the best they could've done with a theatrical movie! I do wish they kept the Squid, but I know that if they included that ending instead of the bomb one they'd had to add even more to film the artist and writer stories on the island!
Nitpicking over the medium is bullshit. As a comic book writer, film-maker, or creator of ANYTHING... your goal is to tell a story. If your story is so convoluded that it can't be made into a movie, then you have failed as a writer. Watchmen has a lot of interesting ideas, but the fact that the writer uses symbolism almost as a literary crutch, and the fact that the storyline is unnecessarily convoluded really disappoints me, because we need more good graphic novels brought to the big screen.
Oh yes, I was looking forward to this one! Love the film and have yet to really delve into the trade... I'm sure you'll have a lot to talk about Cap, and I know I'll be interested the whole way through. :D
Thumbs up for green beans!
