JUST MISSED!!! "It Was I" just missed making the Billboard's Top 10 chart; it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 16 weeks in the Top 100 in 1959. A year later, 1960, Skip & Flip released "Cherry Pie" and once again they just missed making the Top 10, it peaked at No. 11 and spent a total of 15 weeks in the Top100!!!
I know all the words.. and someone just wrote it was you..who noticed my words..my answer, It was I.. well I had to find THIS.. RIGHT NOW! LOVE THIS SONG.. and thanks I LOVE THAT YOU put it here!
1959 was the first year I was really into rock 'n roll. I used to listen to WINS in New York City and they played the heck out of this one that summer. I had the 45 but it broke. I recently found It Was I on CD. Thanks for posting, a great memory.
This song brings back great memories. I remember my dad used to take me with him to the local second-hand store to look for records. He has 1000s of records, but he never had this one. I remember when he finally found it at the store, he brought it home and played it over and over and over. At the time, being an 8-year-old boy, it was annoying - of course, I do the same thing now.
Took my Vette in 67 to the prom and it was driven in 1988 by Zorra Dunov with me beside him down Marther Vineyard.Love to listen to the oldies like "It was I"
Cha Cha Cha,Who could forget Skip and Flip. I would always turn the volume up on my Corvetteam/fm radio when this song came on and the old people in the next car woud give a scowl look .Still love the song and still love and have the same Corvette.
@MWVett that'a an accomplishment what year is your corvette a 1959? the year of the song? or later? I only got to drive one once when I was a kid my boss sent me to pick up his wife it was 1967 Sting Ray never drove one of the older ones Now that I think of it with an FM radio it had to be newer than a 59 just curious
@MWVett I get to drive my 66 vette every week. It truly is a blast from the past, as is this song. My vette is a Top Flight coupe, Nassau Blue, and has the WonderBar radio. What year is your vette?
#11, Summer of 1959 - wish there was a video - thank you for posting this - Skip & Flip later became the Hollywood Argyles (Alley Oop, #1 1960). DAVEDJ
I was amazed to find this one at YT. I thought it was so obscure. I loved this song when I was nine years old (1959) and years later. In fact, I still hum it once in a while. Though today, listening to your video, I realized how corny it was, I got a kick out of it all over again. It brought back memories that I'd forgotten. I'll probably hum it, again, the rest of the day. Thanks for digging up this rare one.
I agree, this song sounds great in stereo. A local public/non-commercial FM station in San Jose, CA was playing a block of oldies this morning. the DJ played 2 hours of songs, all from 1959, and this one was one of them!! Always love hearing it. It is so short, I have to hear it a lot!! LOL
Ahhhh, the Great Gary Paxton ie Flip and Clyde Battin Skip, 1959, classic on Brent. Gary Paxton also went on to form GarPax records....and he produced the Monster Mash for
Bobby "Borris" Pickett. Gary ie Flip recorded Alley Oop along with several others under the Moniker The Hollywood Arygyles on the Lute Label, circa 1960. Also, Fancy Nancy and the Great Marvin and Johnny's R&B cover of Cherry Pie. Great stuff and certainly a classic. Thanks for posting.. jeffs45rpm fiftys4ever
#1 & counting(ha). When I listen to this stereo version I have to say Skip & Flip nver sounded so good. I know what their singing about, it's got a positive message, but as to why she broke off with them/him we'll never know. Anyway it certainly hits home with me when it comes to a golden oldie. I've got my headphones on and that too makes a big difference when it come to true stereo, it's not quite the same thru the speakers. Thanks 4 sharing fond memories of a true classic!
@Ezdduf4kuZ : Agree, excellent sound for a classic......1959 was a beelweather year for top 40 rock........some HUGE cuts that became classics were hear far and wide.........the the white socks, flat tops, and penny loafers were all in vogue.......as were the sock hops on Friday nite.

Clyde "Skip" Battin was born on this date in 1934... {Feb. 18th}
Sadly, Mr. Battin passed away on July 6th, 2003... May he R.I.P.
