  • I've enjoyed your instructive videos and website - Thanks for your time. I'm a little confused on this part 1 video. 1) In aligning your TOPO map, you make no mention of correction for declination - are you in that narrow zone where it can be ignored?? As you show it, you align the map to Magnetic north only. 2) When taking "bearings" off your eTrex, are you being shown bearings toward or backbearings from your pre-recorded waypoints? Thanks for response.

  • So you need a Garmin a Map a compass and a pencil

  • Something seems odd about this demonstration. Since your GPS unit is giving you the bearing to a known location from your point, don't you have to convert it to a back bearing to draw the line from that waypoint ?

Thus if a waypoint was at a bearing of 270 degrees from me, I would have to draw my first line running from that way point at 90 degrees to have it cross where I'm actually standing to the east. This could be done also by inverting the north and south end of the compass needle.

  • What is that wire hanging from the unit???

  • Great demo. Thanks.

  • You could also set the garmin to display UTM coordinates and you would know exactly where you were without the bearings. Topo! Can print a UTM grid on the map. Thanks for the vid

  • Simplifying what others make sounds complicated, thank you!!

  • Great video. It really brought a lot of information together for me that I have read. Thanks.
