Rejoice MACSTERS, Steam has been on Mac computers, running on all OS X operating systems for almost a month, and as of tomorrow, the Mac Half-Life 2 is being officially retailed.
Mac, welcome to gaming! (not to say I don't appreciate my PC)
Here is a noob question. Im a console fag and am thinking of trying out gaming on a computer. Is it rough using a mouse and keyboard or do all games support a usb gaming controller?
For people used to Keyboard+Mouse, a gamepad is a pain in the ass. IMO, aiming with a PS2 is very difficult because I only use that controller when playing certain games, but in a computer you use the mouse everyday so you get more used to your mouse sensibility.
Well I guess it wouldnt hurt to give it a shot at first and not waste my money on a controller off the bat. And if I find I just cant get used to it then I can say that I tried. Hahahaha. Thanks for the reply.
The answer to your questions are no and yes. No, using a mouse and keyboard is more intuitive to most people, and if thats not for you then most games these days do support gamepads on a computer, but just make sure its a common brand such as logitech or somthing. and besides, you can get gaming keyboards/mice, ect.
half life 2 doesnt work on this mac I'm using- its really laggy and then crashes fwith crossover games with a 2.4 GHz dual core processor and 2 GBs of ram- counter strike does, but I have to use direct x level 7 and it SUCKS. all the props like barrels are completely black and the graphics suck. any way I can get it to work better?
I have trouble even running those games on Parallels on my Macbook Pro. I can't imagine trying it with the Mini. No way that's happening. If you already own a copy of Windows, just use bootcamp.
I have a MacBook with 2 GB ram and 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Due processor, the ram is 2 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Right now with crossover on steam I'm downloading gmod, I hope it will be better than used to be on my PC (10 FPS without fraps and about 3 FPS with fraps....) ^^
Wow, if it looks this good running on top of a Mac Mini with less than 2 GHz, my Mac mini will have outstanding performance with this game! Thanks for the video!
your right, i have a 1.83 GHz model and the game runs even better on DX7 mode... the only problem is that the water looks really really bad... oh well. i can run the game at about 50 FPS.
if you used bootcamp with xp, your games would run faster. XP is not a resource hog like osx is. and I'm not a mac hater, i love them but that's a fact
I realize this was filmed back in Sept of '08 but now that the newer MacMinis start at 2 Ghz processing power, I think it can achieve 30 fps consistently.
I use to have Intel Pentium 4 (1.4GHz), 256MB DDR 133MHz RAM, and ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 64MB (PCI) HW-T&L, Vertex Shader 1.0, and no Pixel Shader and it worked like shit but now I have Intel Core2 Quad Q6600 (2.40GHz), 3 GB DDR2 800MHz, Nvidia Geforce 8600 GT, DirectX 10.0 and it works great with 40 FPS so in your face now lol.
And I now have a Macbook Pro, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB of DDR3 SDRAM 1067 MHz, Nvidia 9600m GT and it works great with 60+ fps. So in your face.
But first I am going to upgrade to 4GB and the quad core I have is 2x faster than yours and your video card is intergrated if that and by now im going to get an Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT (512MB) so in your face.
Actually it's not integrated. THe 9400 is integrated, but not the 9600. I love how you're trying to say PCs are better than Mac's because your desktop might be slightly better than a laptop.
Intel is phasing out the processors its using (65nm) so apple will have no choice but to upgrade to a 45nm Intel processor. I hope that when they do they also move to non-intel IGP graphics solution! also a mini displayport connection since the new LED cinema displays have only that for an input. and an all-aluminum body while they are at it.
Episode 1 should perform just as well. Episode 2 probably won't, however, since it's using the Orange Box SDK (which doesn't work very well on the Mini due to the GPU).
well its not made for a mac coz i cant go out n buy it for mac and the version ur using dosent seem to be made for windows either... if u cant explain how it works canu tell mehow i can get it for my mac n how am i supposed to make it work...(got a macbook pro 2.2ghz)
This is the Windows version. Crossover Games basically acts as a Win32 API for Windows apps allowing them to run in Mac OS X, however not all Windows apps will run.
I remember installing this on my laptop. The buildings in the title screen flashed loads. When I started the game it was okay but no were near the best. Seems good on this though.
Actually it does support DX 9 just not entirely and completely. (Software shaders, not Hardware).

so if i get my hands on the windows version how can i install it on ma mac witout using vm/parralls or bootcamp
alibabaG420 3 years ago
You'd need to purchase Crossover Games and use it to install Steam and the game (try out the demo).
MacintechStudios 3 years ago
Get crossover chromium, get steam, then buy Half-Life 2. Might not be perfect but it will work almost perfect. Or maybe perfect.
adoomator 3 years ago
i found another way around it... i managed to find a cider ported version of HL2 that works for mac...
