When you listen to a group like Yes, Rush, Dream Theater or others, there's interplay between the musicians and brilliance on every instrument. Satriani fills most of his songs with minimal bass lines and straight 4/4 drumming. It's a backdrop for his guitar, not orchestrations. He could have accomplished more in a band with other great players.
