I too love this tune, and was privileged to see Kenny live once was Sting. He was fantastic. And this song has always moved me ever since I heard Stings tribute to Kenny Kirkland. RIP Kenny!
It is healing to hear such exquisite music in the face of much less quality and afforded notoriety given to so many other "entertainers" at the expense and neglect of the musicians. God is pleased with jazz and music played from the heart, free of idolatry musical or otherwise...
i have the RGB album and Dienda is on there and is a good one, but I love 'Shadows' best. Hey Doctone, can you post 'Lament' as well? I had the VHS of this and that version is better than the one on Renaissance.
I would contend that mankind doesn't create beauty, he only discovers it. Listening to this tune, I'm convinced in my gut that God is pleased with Jazz. Save me a seat, Kenny.
@JazzWithoutANet Jazz, That was one of the most beautiful statements about the genre of music which is, I believe, the most important ever "discovered". I fully concur with you.
@JazzWithoutANet Trane used the term "channeling" to refer to what you're talking about, that elusive, trancelike "zone" where your horn almost seems to be playing itself that we musicians sometimes pursue in the wrong way (i.e. heroin, booze, coke, etc.). Always loved this tune as well, RIP Kenny, you were the baddest!!!!!!
@JazzWithoutANet Agreed. Man subscribes to, or programs his participation in, various traditions. The stories that attend their creation are more about the control of beauty and cultural supremacy than the birth right of humanity. Tools are tools and materials, materials. Man may be a tool of the muses if he can free himself from being a tool of other men.
DavidAKZ..........some people just don't get it. oh well...............also, the fluttering sound u may be hearing I'm sure is from the quality of this old VHS tape, ' otherwise ', his vibrato is just fine, played the way a beautiful ballad is supposed to be played.
This is beautiful song, just beautiful, and Branford's soprano tone/playing is very under rated in my opinion. R.I.P. Kenny................u were one of a kind!
I've never heard the full original version of Dienda before, just the Sting tribute. Its such a beautiful piece of music. So nice to hear/watch the late great Kenny playing with Branford. I've only ever seen Kenny Kirkland play live, and that was for Sting, and he completely blew me away with his piano solo on When The World Isnt Running Down. God Bless Kenny. Thank you so much for posting this video.
I had the same experience as you with Kenny playing with sting. When I heard him play WTWIRD I immediately fell in love with this man. Thanks Kenny, thanks Branford.
BranfordQuartet recorded a Jarrett track as well -- Trieste. But "huge fan"? Behave. The Herbie, McCoy, and even Beirach influences are much stronger. MUCH stronger.
Cool conversation, though. Glad you like real music.
I don't want to hear Jarrett doing this track either - KK is my personal favourite piano player. I was merely pointing out the KK was a massive fan of Jarrett. These are Tain Watts' words not mine: "Kenny told me that if I didn't hear how great that Keith Jarrett was, that I was stupid","Kenny used to love Keith". I suggest you "behave" and if you don't agree take it up with Mr Jeff Tain Watts. Cool conversation though..
I hear how great Jarrett was/is. I own, gosh, 15 Jarrett records. For some reason EMI releases a 7-disc-set of him every year. And I know Kenny dug him. My point is that other pianists had a bigger influence on KK. And, sure Motian wrote Trieste, but it's fair to call it a Keith song since Keith recorded it in 1977.
I'm reacting against people that hear pianists like KK and Mehldau as Jarrett/Evans clones. KK was well-studied, with phenomenal roots, but was greater than the sum of those parts.
@scottserenity It's funny that some many cats voted your comment into the basement and you're 100% correct, lol! Just because Kenny was the baddest pianist of his generation doesn't mean that he didn't have a sense of humor!
Love his tone on the soprano. Why is this guy still overlooked? How is that possible?

You can hear the orginal version in Branford Marsalis's album'Royal Garden Blues'(1986 released).
