@ankiepankie1 all the Magdalane convents are gone now last one closed in the 90s i guess those aliveleft and the nuns would move on but visiting a convent today im not shure about their are open orders those nuns go out an about and the closed ones but the old madalane convents are in ruins only way in is climb over the gates lol instead of bursting out burst in lol

How hard was it for you to get into the building? A few days ago I recorded some valuable footage of the High Park Magdalene Laundry in Drumcondra, Dublin. I had to hop over a wall to get on the grounds though, it's a construction site. I haven't uploaded it yet but I got a lot of footage of the outside, not much of the inside though. The building was so delapidated it would have been dangerous to go inside.

They should turn this and buildings like it into museums and shrines to be historical sites, like old prisons are now, to testify to the burdens they once placed on women and children, and the abuses of a Roman Catholic authority in Ireland. It is silly to let it go to disrepair, and criminal to sell it off as they have done to most of the sites, making them forgotten, disappeared. My grandmother was reared here. The outrage I hear here is wide of the mark and a bit too simplistic. If you an analysis of how the state transferred the responsibility of civilising it's population. Read Tom Inglis "Moral monopoly". Remember, those of you who attack the church that your mothers and fathers (as did mine) supported the church. Most still do.
I think its a shame that this building has gone to ruin. It has a chance of redemption as a positive resource for the community.

How hard was it for you to get into the building? A few days ago I recorded some valuable footage of the High Park Magdalene Laundry in Drumcondra, Dublin. I had to hop over a wall to get on the grounds though, it's a construction site. I haven't uploaded it yet but I got a lot of footage of the outside, not much of the inside though. The building was so delapidated it would have been dangerous to go inside.

@stealthpiccasso you have to remember that ireland was -and in some respects still is- highly religious. they had a strong community but were easily shunned if they didnt fit in. most of the time its was a priests suggestion to put the women there...and you didnt question a priest, their word was law. nobody outside really knew what it was like, all they knew was that these were fallen women who deserved to be punished

it was an institute for the poor and abandoned , where children worked for 16 hours a day for no pay for years , and at night they were sexually abused , back in the 1960's the laundry was making a profit of almost 200 grand a year , a fortune in Ireland , back then .

you are correct. in many cases fathers took their daughters for shaming the family for being raped. some very young girls taken to convents...so they get raped, get blamed for it and are incarcerated. the irish people failed these women, girls and boys (industrial schools) - the court system taking babies away because one parent died. it is such a sad and embarrassing history.

i agree, you can't blame the sins of some on everyone in your faith. forgiveness helps when some of these nuns would've acknowledged what they did and take responsibility, but they hid and would not speak. the most sadistic siter, was infuriated her name leaked in the inquiry, she wanted protection. to call innocent girls penitents for doing nothing was such a disgrace. the more and more videos and accounts shown makes it all the more baffling. from boys and girls who are stuck as children.

I live near this building in cork city, som1 should go back and set it on fire properly so that it will be removed from the landscape for good. Hopefully there will be a commission set up soon to recognise the womens rights abuses that went on in these labour camps. The church never even said sorry, not a shred of mercy, not even an acknowledgment. And where are all these irish based human rights organizations? who is fighting for irish people? Utterly disgusting.

that is a untruth yes there are been abuse and cover ups but the catholic church is not practicing organised child molestation and there was no magdalene laundry in CORK it was called the good shepherds Dublin is where the Magdalene Laundry was. The state was just as responible as the church for the abuse these were the times i wander what church your belonged to obviously you have a hatred for us catholics.

yes there was two laundries in cork l should know as l made visit my mum who spent twenty seven years there and my sister two years it just show your making comments and u know nothing please respect women alive and dead years ago all of lreland turned a blind eye stop making fun of people that cant defend themselfs if your a catholic go to church and pray for these poor women and count your lucky stars it wasnt your family it happened to

This is an eerie video, but realy hits home! It makes me want to disregard all religion, mainly as the injustices which were carried out in these times were done so under the banner of religous context. I pray that all the hurt and damage caused to those poor women and children will be healed in heaven, may they find peace at last. x

This building reminds me of the barracks we lived in in Germany, built for Kaiser Wilhelm's Cadet Corps. I can't imagine being sentenced (for lack of a better word) to spend my life in such a place. Like Christy Moore sings, "Our Lady of Charity? Of Charity??"

Ironically the laundries were supposed to help prostitutes secure a proper job not become dumping places for families to dump their girls if they had flirted with a boy or had unwanted or sex outside of marriage. or were mentally unstable

I've been inside this place several times- during both the daytime and nighttime. I captured some decent photos.
I also managed to find a big board with a brutally sadistic poem printed on it: "Bothar An Ghort' ('The Famine Road'). Presumably, this poem was used for 'educational instruction'..
My friends and I experienced something unexplainable simultaneously whilst standing against a wall in a room on the western side, that appears to have been a kitchen of some sort once upon a time..

this is a disgrace to ireland the fact that this "asylum" was opened for unfit women. the catholic chruch of ireland has alot to answer for the nuns and priests who for years abused these women and made slaves of them. it is a harsh reality of times gone by. i pray for the women who had to live through that life living in an asylum....may god bring them peace...and for the nuns and priests that abused these women may they rot in hell for all eternity!
