  • @217cmiller Many non-native (exotic) species of animals are banned because they can adapt, thrive and breed in the new environment - becoming a feral organism.

    Monk parakeets, aka Quaker parrots have shown great success at adaptation, even in colder climates. They were native to South America and imported into the US as pets. Now, feral quaker communities can be found all over the US.

  • I don't know about crops, but I know the Quaker parrots in Connecticut were at the center of a huge controversy. The birds make massive communal nests on power poles, creating outages and fire hazards. Nests were removed, birds were gassed - people were outraged.

  • @OnePickieChickie yeah, I've read of the ones in new york and chicago and other places... I wouldn't think they would be harmful to the eco system of any area though, can they really cause that many problems? is it just quakers that are banned in california? or other species as well?
