Yes, but fighting them back will be more fun (I know I can't win but it was always nice to cut down some chicken in link to the past). The most hilarious use of a chicken is as a weapon-in some zelda games the attack will stop whenever you lift the chicken you tortured, and continue whenever you drop it. If you drop it in the vicinity of some enemies, they will surely die.

In Twilight princess if you beat the crap out of the Cuccos you gain temporary control of them. Strange but true!

Also if you beat a Cucco on Epona in Ocarina of Time they'll still attack but you'll be invulnerable. =D
