  • I was named after Mariah Carey but everyone tells me about this song and that im called the wind. first time hearing this song and I love it!

  • mariah carey was named after this song :D

  • This is what I was named after :)

  • we named a horse after this song back in 1976

  • Western Disco almost... fascinating.

  • Wow! I remember this song. This is by far the best version, I plan to buy the movie. Frankie Laine was a great singer.

  • was mums inspiration and was passed down to me no faults

  • what a voice

  • My inspiration and idol MARIAH CAREY was named after this beautiful song. :> Well being named after song?!! No doubts that she's a born singer. :)

  • I remember this song from my childhood. Sounds as great now, 50+ years later, than it did when I was 3ft high! This song has been a favorite of mine for many years. Frankie Laine had one of the best voices of his era.

  • Michael Jackson sampled this song when he recorded Ben??

The beggining of this song reminds me of Ben: "I used to say "I" and "me"

Now it's "us", now it's "we"...

  • @andressac27 @andressac27 They also mention Frankie Laine in a video of the Jackson's. And they're like who's that?? haha

    watch?v=ZKSUr0p_pXg around 3:50 ish

  • @andressac27 :50 ish actually

  • Take it for what it's worth.. But it looks to me like he recorded this song at the age of 85.. 5 years after the passing of his wife of 43 years.. Now... listen to it again.

  • My name is Mariah, and my parents named me after this song.. i was also born on the windiest day of the year! :)

  • @Poodunk45 There must be Thousands of Women who was named for this song.

  • @markalson1938 I was

  • @Poodunk45 my parents were GONNA name me Mariah. but im Alina(:

  • mariah carey wasnamed after this song

  • was he a drug addict?

  • What a Voice !!!!!!!!!!!

  • still my favorite version

  • He did the initial recording in 1950 - he did an entire album which my parents had and I always enjoyed. The original recording is even better because there's not all that back-ground effects in this version, and it's just his tremendous voice which was so outstanding!

  • i love this song. this is a good version by a great singer but vaughn monroe sang it best and of course harve presnell in paint your wagon. frankie ranks right close to marty robbins.

  • @grannydyess You are so right the other versions you mentioned plus Eddie Fisher's are better. But none of them sang it in their eighties.

  • @grannydyess

I Like it regardless of who sings it.

  • I was named after this song from the movie Paint Your Wagon.

  • Got to him one time in the 50 plus yeasr that I have listened to his music.

Powerful performance for a powerful man. His music will always live on.

  • I grew up listening to Frankie Laine and got to see him in person. A very powerfull voice. Never get tired of hearing him sing.

  • @TheCopgirl1 Yes he was a class act real power and emotion in his voice.I can appreciate a great singer and frankie laine definitely was, i love his version of granada especially.

  • He sold 250 million disks world wide, and earned 21 gold records. If that's not being successful, what is.

  • His voice will be remembered in al the famous western movie sound tracks, that is timeless. He was a sucessful singer and song writer.

  • @franklindavid Yes, Frankie was a very Sucessful singer he had

but not just for his Western songs. He had 70 charted recordings

and only a few could you call Westerns. He was also a wrighter of songs but I wouldn't call him sucessful. He wrote several in collaboration with some of the biggest stars of the day. BUT none of them were ever a hit. "We'll Be Together Again" was recorded by over a 100 singers, but nobody could make a hit out of it.

  • Oh, didn´t know that. But he still IS alive in his music :)

  • Is he still alive? OH, YES INDEED!!!! This totaly took my breath away!!! Love you Frankie <3

  • @Hilkka52 Frankie died in 2007 at the age of 93. This song was recorded when he was in his eighties. I asked Frank once why he didn't record this song when he was in his prime. His answer was They never offered it to me. By They he meant the People that was in charge at ABC records where he was under contract and had the say as to what he recorded. They didn't want him to record "You Gave Me A Mountain" either But this time he did it anyway.

  • @markalson1938 He may have been in his 80's when ne sang this song, but his voice was still powerful.

  • I miss you frankie laine and so many other TRUE talents

  • How come nobody's mentioned Clint Eastwood's version?

  • Mariah Carey was named after this song :D

  • Neil Young and me love this song. I Neil is into country and I am not but some songs transcend..

  • he sounds at 85 better than sinatra at70-amazing!

  • @hollbri1 I think Frankie took better care of himself that what

Sinatra did. He had quite smoking in the sixties, He never drank to excess and he didn't hang out with a ratpact.

  • @hollbri1 yes he is awesome for sure!!

  • Love it.

  • @maureenmo1 Harve Presnell sung it in the movie, I'm not sure who did it in the orginal Broadway version. I know that Howard did it in some later stage plays and did

put it on a LP but I have never found a copy of it.

  • I'm pretty sure he did record it, MANY years ago!! Probably in the 50's??

  • @1949man tAKE IT FROM SOMEONE WHO HAS COLLECTED FRANKIE'S RECORDS FOR OVER FIFTY YEARS AND HAS EVERY THING HE HAS RECORDED, HE DID NOT MSKE S RECORD OF THIS SONG IN THE 50'S OR 60'S.

i ONCE ASKED FRANKIE WHY HE HADN'T RECORDED IT IN HIS HAYDAY AND HE SAID IT WAS NEVER OFFERED TO HIM. hE WAS UNDER CONTRACT WITH THE BIG STUDIOS WHO MADE THE DECISIONS WHAT HE RECORDED.

  • @markalson1938 Thanks for the update.Memory slowly going,I guess!!

  • @1949man Your not alone many people thought that Frankie had sung this song. I think that's because it's such a Frankie Laine type song. To bad he didn't, he may have been able to make a hit recording of it as no one else did.

  • Jim Ed Brown has recorded a great version!

  • I have to look for cd's by him and others. Have a turntable and hope to find other great records of the 50's and 60's some great stuff by great artists. Saw Frankie a couple of years ago on PBS his very last appearance. Lost that great voice when he was in his 90's. Amazing guy. Sure do miss him.

  • Cnsidering how od Frankie was this is awesome!!!

  • Frankie is good on this but ED AMES is best

  • @DianeK1950

I have many versions of this song and they are all good, But I have never found one by Ed Ames. Others have mentioned his version before.

  • A great one , Mark. Keep 'em rolling in, cheers, Ernie

  • my wife was named after this song her name is maria jo

  • It's good but the Kingston Trio owns this song.

  • @gmanesqhotmail

everyone seems to have their own favoried version of this song. I'm waiting for someone to write to tell me that Tiny Tim did it best.

  • @markalson1938 " Tiny Tim did it best ! "

  • dude learn to sing and it mariah not maria.....cuz this is a disgraces to the song i was named after

  • I think Kimmie's taste is all in her mouth. This is a fabulous song by a singer that no one can compare to .. well, maybe Marty Robbins - but two different singers with two different styles. Thank you for posting this!

  • my name is mariah!!!!!

  • I have heard several version all good,great song,but of all of them,Frankies is my favorite-thanks M38

  • Yes Studebaker Man, I have many versions of this song and they are all good. But for a guy in his Eighties when he recorded this recording he is fantastic.

  • Frankie Laine a truly great singer and a gentleman he appreciated his fans as much as they appreciated him

  • Amen to that. I think it was Frakie Laine singing the theme song to Blazing Saddles, that really made a great movie even better.

  • Great voice , great song what else can you ask for. Music pure music.

  • This word to the children of Frankie, I love your father, his voice, his smiling , Wow!!!!! Juan Salinas, Fargo. With all respect!!

  • Ah mempries of when music was music thanks so much for posting !

  • Thanks for your comments on my song postings. Yes music was music back then and don't hold your breath waiting for music to come back. I know I've been holding mine for 40 years and it is getting tiresome.

  • Thanks for getting back to me and again thanks for posting this great music!

  • anything you post on frankie laine or marty robbins or the other great western singers is appreciated. love them all! especially marty robbins. thanks for sharing

  • Wonderful rendition, and great Frankie! Remember "scaring" myself when I was really little with a 78rpm record of "Ghost Riders in The Sky!" Thanks for posting!

  • If you had a 78RPM recording of "Ghost Riders In The Sky" when you were a kid, It wasn't recorded by Frankie. A lot of people think he had the hit of this song, It was vaughn Monroe in 1949. Frankie recorded it for an album in 1962 but no single in the U.S..

But I hear that It was put out as a 45 RPM single in Europe taken from this album.

  • You're right! I'm sorry for the error, but I was less than 10 at the time. I think I even remember the label; may have been "Mercury!" I also recall hearing "St. James Infirmar," but can't recall who sang that either; it, too was scary!

  • If it was the big hit it was on RCA but there were several others. Several singers have recorded "Saint James Infirmar" It is a Real Old Song. Frankie recorded it in 1959. I have it on YT but it isn't one I like a lot.

  • Fabulous Frankie Laine. Thank you for all the joy you gave us.

  • I have said elsewhere that these great songs done by Frankie, Gogi, Patsy & other greats were what we heard at my grandparents houses. Thanks to my grandparents for raising us on this great music. RIP 3 of them

  • It would be nice if this music would return but don't hold your breath.

  • Mariah has an "H" at the end turkey!!!

  • Not another one, Read the letters below. In 1951 the song writers who wrote this song. Gave it the name "THEY CALL THE WIND MARIA" lOOK IT UP IN ANY BOOK ON POPULAR MUSIC.

  • I was lucky to get to know this man when he and his wife lived at the Sheraton Half-Moon Inn in San Diego in 1974. What a wonderful man and just a fantastic singer.

  • One of the truly great singers of all time. But we all get old...

  • One o f the best voices in the business. His voice fit old western sound tracks perfectly. I think we've seen the best. There will not be any singers of this rank any more.

  • A great talent,he is missed

  • My mother used to sing this to me as a lullaby when I was a child, I've always loved this song.

  • This is a sacrilage compared to the original in Paint your Wagon movie. Check it out!

  • i listen 2 this with my dad my grandad died listening to this song rip grand dad

    love u xxx

  • Why can't people just enjoy the incredible voice of Frankie Laine. Enough with the spelling.

  • the name is "Mariah" not maria

  • I bought a piece of furniture made by the Tara Maria tribe, from down in Mexico. The name translated to "Lonely Wind"

  • It's a shame ignorant people can't understand what the name of a song is.. stop "twisting" it.. it's a SONG not a political statement.. don't like it .. then don't listen

  • It's not MARIA, IT's spelled MORIAH, for God's sake, from the Hebrew!!

  • As you say, "For God's Sakes" look it up. It doesn't mater if it's Hebrew or not. The name Lerner and Lowe gave the song they wrote in 1951 was

    "THEY CALL THE WIND MARIA"

    Not Moriah.

  • It's now Maria ,or Moriah, it's Mariah. They Call the Wind Mariah The Kingston Trio Words and Music by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe -From their 1959 LP "From the Hungry" -From the musical "Paint Your Wagon" SLOWLY Way out here they have a name for wind and rain and fire The rain is Tess , the fire's Joe, and they call the wind Mariah Mariah blows the stars around, sets the clouds a'flyin' Mariah makes the mountain sound like folks was up there dyin' From Wiki
  • If you google the song, it is spelled both ways. But if you look in any reference book on music and song titles, Lerner and lowe wrote the song in 1951 and I think they had the right to title the song what they wanted too. They titled the song

"They Call The Wind Maria" So it doesn't matter

what ledgen or other countries call the wind,

The song writers called it MARIA.

  • It appears that you are correct.

    My apologies.

  • Apology excepted, You weren't the first to write about the name. But in fairness when most sing this song they do pronounce it "Mariah". It's funny I think I have gotten more comments on this song than any of the other of the 300 songs I have posted on YouTube and this wasn't even on of Frankie's hits.

  • Thing is, I heard this, I could have sworn I heard this in one of my old Frankie Laine Albums. That's why I looked it up on youtube to begin with. And it sounded more forceful then this version. I'll look through my albums, but it seems the OP has already done a lot of digging, so he's probably right.

  • You can hear him perform this song in his prime on the album "Command Performance".

  • I have his "Command" album in frount of me now. There is no recording of "Maria" on it. As I've stated many of times, Frankie never recorded this song till the "Wheels" CD. I've had people tell me it was on almost every album Frankie made in the 50's or 60's. IT'S NOT THERE.

  • i was born in 54, and frankie laine was my most favourite singer by the time i was 5 years old, and i collected loads of records and memorabilia, this was all destroyed by a fire in the 70s, and could never be replaced, but to hear him singing again in the background while working in my house, this brings back so many memories i cant explain to you, he is one of the greatest singers of all time, thank you markalson1938 for this posting and many others, kindest regards to you and yours,,,paddy,

  • Great music, great song. Have been a fan of

Frankie Laine since forever. Thank you for sharing this beautiful peace. It make me feel so wonderful. Brought back lovely memories. Do you have any more like this? God bless.

  • I have a bunch of them on YouTube. I think about

250 now. They are not all on Frankie but most are. Type in my name markalson1938 and they should all come up. I add more each week.

  • It was an old song before the movie Paint your wagon.

  • It was an old song because it was written in 1951by Lenordr and lowe for the Broadway musical " PAINT YOUR WAGAN" the movie didn't come out till the sixties. But it was written for the musical.

  • Just goes to show..... You learn something every day on You Tube.

  • This may suprise most of you but the Song that everyone seems to love. :They Call The Wind Maria" Was never a big hit recording. In fact it only made the charts once in 1951 by the Mariners which was #30 on the charts. I didn't believe it myself till I looked it up.

  • This song about the wind called Mariah was an old song even before the movie Paint your wagon.

  • Frankie did this very well, but I love it by Jim Turner, I heard him sing it on the Lawrence Welk show.

  • When this was done in the movie, Paint Your Wagon by Gig Young, was it already an old song?

  • Sorry, that was Robert Goulet.

  • Frankie did record this when he was much younger. It was beautiful and haunting. This version was jazzed up

  • If you could find a copy of Frankie doing this number in the sixties you would be rich because you would have something no one else has. I have been collecting Frankie's recordings since 1957 and have everything he has put out. Pluse all the reference material to back it up. I've had many discusions over who recorded what. Some think Frankie did "Ghoast Riders" back in 49. I even got in an augument with a guy that swore that he did "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance"

  • Frankie does a good job here, but Harve Presnell did a much nicer job in Paint Your Wagon!

  • Yes Harve is better but remember he was about 50 years younger than what Frankie was when he recorded this.

  • I would love to have heard Frankie sing this when he was young.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks, I love his songs.

  • I love this song i have it on in the car now!!!!!!....take a listen to my Eurovision 2009 entry for Ireland its on my site...leave a comment if you like it or not!!!!

  • Ijust watched your Eurovision 2009 entry. No wonder it lost, It's to good. The girl is really cute and has a nice voice and the song sounds like it is from the sixties. To good for this day and age.

  • great movie great song. Paint your wagon and come along!!!

  • Too bad we cant bring back those days/

    Thank you YOU TUBE

  • First I do the splits over an egg; then I do a somersault into an open watermelon.

  • GenericGene the song is from the movie Paint your Wagon (1969- Eastwood and Marvin Lee)

A version of Lerner-Lowe musical about the gold rush days.

Thank you markalson1938 for posting this, tis lovely.

GMARTA24 you may eventually will get a clue.

  • great video, great singer.

  • This song is strong and tender at the same time... Superb! Thanks a lot for posting!

  • Iam disapointed he didnt belt this one out like Harve Presnell or Robert Goulet..he could have easily.

  • Frankie was in his eighties when he recorded this, he wasn't able to belt it out anymore, that's why I said I wish he had done it when he was younger.

  • he did record it in his prime I remember my Father having an album in the early 60's of Frankie's and this song was on it.

  • brilliant

  • i love this voice

  • It is wonderful that real music is still there

  • Superb classic - Disney did a story on Hurricane in the early sixties called Maria ?

was this the theme song ? anyone know - Gene

  • Frankie was great too. The Ed Ames version was on the Ed Sullivan show once.

  • If the Ed Ames version was available it would be in my favorites.

  • Yes, Ed's version is very good as is several other singers who sang this song while in their prime. Frankie didn't he did his when he was in his eighties. That makes a differance.

  • didnt frankie record a song called the kids last fight as any body got it

  • Yes, Frankie recorded the song "The Kids Last Fight" in 1954 it reached # 20 on the Charts.

I'll post the song in the next few days.

  • Thanks for posting "The Kids Last Fight" . My old man used to play that song at least once a week on his old record player .

  • I just wanted to let you know I just posted "The Kids Last Fight" to YouTube. Take a look

  • Yes he did,it is on an L.P will have to look it out will get back to you.

  • i,ve always loved this song my afghan hound was named mariah

  • Actually, markalson I think his voice is as good in this as it ever was. He just jazzed it up a little too much. It's still very good, though.

  • my names mariah:)

  • I love Frankie Laine and this song. Grew up listening to him from my dad. Thanks.

  • I always loved this song and Frankie's version of it. What a fantastic voice, thanks for sharing.

  • Great stuff...

  • Tuolumne Co. misses you Frankie,

    ..sail on brother!

  • This is the very first time I have heard this recording and it brought a lump to my throat and tears in my eyes. God Bless Frankie, there will never be another like him.

And thank you also for making it available.

  • No there will never be another singer like Frankie or for that matter like any of the great singers of the past. Not that the youth to day couldn't develope a great voice but the time have changed style today isn't on the voice as it is on noice and special effects.

  • Vaughn Monroe, Ed Ames, and Eddie Fisher also recorded very good versions of this song.

  • Yes I know I have copies of all those plus several others.

But Frankie was in his eighties when he recorded this for his "Wheels Of A Dream" CD.

I would have loved to have heard him do this number back in the sixties.

  • great video, great singer.

  • TRIVIA: Don't you know guys that the parents of Mariah Angela Carey a.k.a. Mariah Carey who are Patricia Hickey (Irish-American) and Alfred Roy Carey (African-American/Venezuelan) got Mariah's name from this song "They Call The Wind Maria" (spelled 'Maria' without the H, but pronounced 'Mariah') a popular Lerner & Loewe musical, Paint Your Wagon (1969).... and this was also the year when Mariah Carey was born. ^__^

  • mariah carey has NO middle name!!

    only MARIAH CAREY.

  • That was Frankie's first wife Nan Grey. I have a clip on her take a look. This picture is from 1he 1930's when she was an actress with Universal Pictures. They were married in 1950 and was together till her death on her

    75th birthday.

  • Great video, great rendition of a great song!

Who is the pretty girl towards the end of your video? Thanks.

    KK

  • Pretty damn good for someone 80+.
