@keithburgoyne Most (arcade) games that were ported for the Amiga actually were great, often the best version! I've seen many Retro reviewers talk about their favorite games but nearly none of them talk about the Amiga version which is sad. I grew up on the Amiga and would like to see some more love for it from these retro guys.
Not to be mean to Dante or anything, I like the DMC games, but I don't quite get why Capcom created the DMC series when they already had Strider; the epitome of fan-fucking-tastic awesomeness... I do hope Hiryu will see his place in the spotlight again some time in the future...
@GrahamChapman DMC 1 was the original version of RE 4 but wasn't what Capcom had envisioned so they made it a completly new game and started from scratch with RE 4
Anyone who likes Strider should check out Osman for the arcade (you can play it on the mame emulator) and Moon Diver on Playstation Network. Both were made by Koichi Yotsui, the original creator of Strider.
Strider is one of the most unique, cool, and strange video game series ever. One really awesome thing about the PS1 Strider 2 is if you beat the Strider 1 arcade disk thats part of the package and save - load that into Strider 2 - you unlock a bonus stage. I remember it being a prequel stage (level 0) or something like that. The stage is fantastic.
How is it a good franchise if they haven't made one in so long. Part 2 was a flop, not many people heard of it. But it would be nice to see a remake or a reboot... Sorta like Ninja Gaiden. But Capcom seems to focus on making the next Gears, yet they can't even get that right.
Johnny just to let you now that there was a Japanese release for PlayStation 1 it was a double CD pack. It had Strider 1 and 2 AND it's selling just over $100 for the 2 cd pack. So technically it's not a quite complete pack...lol
You guys should do some notable recommendations of some other Strider-esque games like Cannon Dancer, Run Saber, and Moon Diver. Cannon Dancer and Moon Diver are actually made by the same creator as Strider Hiryu.
Haha, that comic looks better than anything I probably could have done when I was conceivably as old as you were when you did it. Great channel by the way.
Love, love , love this series, even Strider Returns has it's moments. Great review you guys should have had a side note about Osman. I know it's not an official Strider game but it had a similar cool vibe and gameplay and was directed by the same guy, Kouichi Yotsui. People need to play this game!
@RaageQuit It happaned to me too. I discorvered this channel near episode 100. I got to tell you, I went back to Episode 1 and started to watch then one by one. Its worth Every second!
You have extremely similar tastes in classic games as I have man. I seriously wish I lived in Canada, and in the same city as you just to hang out and talk. I think we would be/would of been good friends... But I'm stuck here in California... :/
I remember when I 1st saw Strider in the arcades when I was a kid back in the 80s the first thing I thought was that strider was some Russian dude who was some kind of KGB future agent. I thought this because when I put my quarter in the very 1st things I saw were mosques, the letters CCCP and what looked like a red star on the main character's chest. So I'm thinkin', "A Russian super ninja from the future??? Kool let's give this a shot." My personal favorite stage was Siberia. Amazing music.
strider 2 is amazing only thing that sucks is that it was too short man,and level design was...well,each lvl contains like 5 acts,1 act is just a small area with some enemies and a easy boss,i mean every act's section is like two steps from beggining till the end, then loading...that and i cant save the game,i exit the game,go into options, select save/load i save(or so it says),and when i try the game again it puts me to the beggining weither i loaded or not!
seeing all your boxed games in the intro makes me jealous, I don't have any boxes for my 90's and 80's games.
I'm so gonna get an alarm clock with a "download your own music" option and I'm gonna record your theme so I can set it to that.
some of my friends say strider 3 should be 3D but I say there should be a side story on xbox live arcade and playstation network that's 2D and much like strider 2
The Sega MasterSystem version is very fun to play...this console had some really good versions of some games... like Ninja Gaiden.. for me.. the best of all versions...
Strider! It turned out to be one of the last games I purchased for the Genesis. When it was actually one of the games I wanted from the time I bought the Genesis. I was amazed at how close it was to the Arcade game. I couldn't find it for years though. Eventually in 95. I found it at BJ's. It's one of those stores where you fill out your order on a computer. Then you pick it up. A conveyor belt brings it. It took a while. Because it was the last copy. The box was full of dust. I was so happy!
the reason why every series has a black sheep is because other companies want to cash in and they just can't get it right, or an experiment that uses something that doesn't work even if it's made by the original company
OH my GOD keep thinking we're twins we got the same love for old school gaming and I also did a shit loads of drawings in my black and white notebook of making my own games and comics of different genres and formats like side scrolling and upview angles for example and create different charecters and titles too skectching wise. BUT when growing up sadly to say I have to throw them out because need to do cleaning. Looking back on it I wish I could go back in time and get it back. Miss those days.
I had strider when i was six so it had a massive impact which is why my sega is still set up in my room today amongst modern consoles with strider in my collection, SHING SHING!!
@blueprophet9 well you know Osman is basically Strider since Capcom have the rights to Strider they couldn't use the name so they went with Osman but the gameplay is exactly the same the reason for this games is cuz one of the original creator of Strider game wanted to do a real sequel after some other company release "Strider Return" (I think that was the name)
Oh yes, I know my Strider history well. Osman is still cooler than Hiryu IMO of course. Read the wiki plot...kind of eerie how similar it is to the current state of the world. The creator definitely has a fine grasp on history. Osman is a Uigyur, maybe, if not a Turk? He eviscerates and blows enemies apart with his 'kicks', man...what's cooler than that? lol
I loved strider on genesis so much. That level with the anti gravity was so amazing and the jungle level was so different than anything i'd ever played. The nes version was so much different that i didn't really like it.
First Strider on the arcade! It was the best!!! The music, the sounds of the robots, the clanking of the gorilla giant, the dinosaur amazon level, the maniacal laughter of the final boss - nothing beat it! It was all so scary, wonderous, and adventurous at the time. Strider 2 on the arcade/Playstation was fun, but it just didn't have enough of strange otherworld opera the first had (What happened to the robot buddies!?!). Remake the first arcade Strider, Capcom!
On the other hand, if Capcom is to make a Strider 3, it needs derive more from the mystical whimsy of the Strider 1 arcade, including those cool robot helpers!
Never knew Strider was a Manga charecter before it was a game its crazy! Maybe it set the trend! It's got a kind of the original sonic game(the arcade version!) kind of style going on!
you.....score.....major effin points with that!!!!!!!!!!! Goddamn ur lucky, i remember when i was a kid in KB toys, I really wanted the 2 fighter pack with Ryu & Magneto.
Nice review of the series. Strider for the arcade/genesis is still my favorite game of all time. It's one of the first games I played and it's still a blast to play.
I didn't know that there was an arcade version until the Genesis port was released and I remember all of the excitement over it being an 8 meg cart.
I never was able to find a PSX copy; now I see why...
I did however find the instruction manual in a vendors' trash at my local flea market once and asked him why he threw it away. I can't remember what he said but, I just gave in this look like "Do you have any idea WHAT this IS?? Are you an idiot?!"
Wouldnt it be great if Capcom made a 3-D strider that played like Devil May Cry,and you got to cruise around collecting treasure and finding metal animals to summon as a familiars and fight giant robot gorillas and KGB cybernetic centipedes? The whole time earning better combos and weapon power-ups you buy with Zenny! YOU CAN DO IT CAPCOM!.........but please not on Wii
Hi! You're videos are great! Sorry, but you've missed some version of "Strider": Commodore Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64, MS-DOS, Sega Master System, Sharp X68000, SuperGrafx. The Sharp X68000 version was (as usual) an Arcade Perfect...!
what about osman, the best in the series? so i guess it wasn't really a strider game... but, c'mon?! Not even a mention? Otherwise, awesome show here.
Hey cool info once again! Didin't know Strider was a manga! And I missed the NES version.. I think I'll give it a look.. ;) But the Megadrive version was and will always be my favourite one.. Too bad there isn't a Neo Geo CD version of the arcade game, it would have been great! Nice manga by the way Johny :)
I had the manga it got destroyed by a neighbor with a Grudge. His name is now in my Death Note... and the NES game had the Scarf it was actually in the Intro
The first time I ever played Strider was on the Sega Megadrive and it absolutely blew me away.
It may sound silly but one of my favourite things about the game is the ability to grab onto things and fire your weapon while hanging off them.
I wish I could explain why I love that simple thing so much but it's partly why I also love Robocop vs Terminator and Demolition Man on the same system.
I really need to check out that Manga if they have an English version.
first of all (just to correct you) metal gear for the nes was also not made by the same people so metal gear 2 for the nes is not the only one. also i like what robman is wearing, where did he get that nintendo rehab shirt? i might get it one day.
p.s. i agree they do need to make a remake of strider (or maybe a sequel with a remake of the original as an
Fun fact: The NES game was never released in Japan even though the game was made there just like the Star Tropics series. A Famicom Strider cart or FDS disk doesn't exist.
I had no idea that the PC Engine had an extra level. I can't find it on youtube. Please, please, please, please, please make a video of the new level.
Strider is one of the best if the not the best game on the genesis and it also has one of the best 16 bit soundtracks along with ysIII and rondo of blood.
Hey, another excellent episode, giving a great review of a series I hadn't heard of before now! Looks like a terrific action platformer; I'll have to keep an eye out for the NES cartridge. Or hope that the Turbo CD or Genesis versions hit the Virtual Console.
Seems like Capcom gave U.S. Gold the job of producing all their black sheep. They developed the Mega Man game on the Game Gear, too.
WOW!!! Truly great episode!! A very thurough look into the Strider franchize!!
That arcade perfect Strider 1 that comes with Strider 2 is the crown jewel of any game collection!! AND DUDE!! Those old comics are so amazing!! what a surprise!! Total surprise to see that! I used to make Battletoads fan comics when that game first came out! Fantastic episode!!
Another great vid guys. This series does kick some serious butt. You're right the Genesis versions are great except for the Strider Returns. US Gold did a horrible job with this game. 5/5
I only played the original on the NES. Never knew about the others. You know taken seriously this could be a very cool game if was done now with 3D. Could easily be a platormer type like Infamous or something more cinematic like MGS4. I loved the plot of the NES one.
Great vid man! I never knew about the Strider series and I played the Sega Genesis religiously for years. I just picked up a copy, can't wait to play it. I love when you do reviews about old forgotten series like the Exile.
Excellent review of the Strider series. 1989 was great year from movies ( i.e. Batman ) and video games ( i.e. Strider ). I remember my first encounter of Strider at a local 7-Eleven. I was mesmerized by the level design and the characters. At the time, I had NO IDEA the Strider character was based from a manga. After falling in love with the coin-op I wanted this game at home. Owning the coin-op was obviously out of the price range. So I prayed for a NES version - lol
Boy was I disappointed with the NES game. It wasn't the arcade game. It was somekind of quest game and the controls were pretty awful. I went back to playing the coin-op until Sega announced a straight port of Strider on the Sega Genesis. I was estatic of the conversion at the time. I ended up with a Mega Drive copy in Xmas'90 . It was a slightly better version due to the artwork on the casing and the digitized phrase "All forms of old Gods...Dieeeeee!" missing from U.S. copy.
It was probably the most memorable Xmas I had - a copy of Strider Hiryu and Sword of Vermillion ^_^ Mid '90s when the INTERNET became the household tool for me. I found someone online who was selling just the coin-op Jamma PCB of Strider for $100. I didn't have a Super Gun or anything to hook the game up and play. So I held on to the board until I had enough money for a Super Gun device. Again, I was estatic to have THE ARCADE GAME at home at last ! Today, I still own the CPS-1 board ^_^
I never got the hate for SOV. I thought it was a good RPG. Strider was one of my top 5 favorite Genesis games. It was a nearly flawless port of the arcade game.
A lot of people didn't like the NES version, and while it did pale by comparison, I didn't think it was that bad. Strider 2, it's pretty unanimous... it sucked.
@JunmaiShu - Did you play Strider in the arcades before the NES game released ? I guess at the time Capcom rubbed me the wrong way when they opted to change Strider into a quest game with "floaty-like" controls. They did a similar thing with "Willow" that year (1990 ) which I loved the arcade side-scroller. But the Willow RPG on the NES was pretty good even though I prefered the arcade game.
I really liked Strider 2 - especially after that AWFUL U.K. attempt with Strider Returns - lol
Yes, I spent countless hours (and quarters) in arcades in my youth. It's actually painful to me to walk by video arcades these days and see nobody in there, save 1 person jumping around on a DDR pad. Some of my favorites were: Galaga, Ms. Pac Man, Punchout, Yie ar Kung Fu, and Afterburner (I thought the moving cockpit you sat in was so cool when it first came out). I got into Street Fighter II Championship Edition as well.
Pretty hilarious how they screwed up the two discs in Strider 2 (i.e. the Disc that says Strider 2 is actually Strider 1, and vis versa). I've tried tracking down a copy of it for a decent price and have had no such luck.
I actually play the Genesis version & the arcade version(In my PSP, which it featured in Capcom classics collection: Remixed) & it kick fcuking ass. ^_^ But it's hard also.
Strider was also available for the Commodore Amiga. I had it for my Amiga 500. It had nicer sound effects, but not quite as impressive graphics.

Never knew Strider was a Manga charecter before it was a game its crazy! Maybe it set the trend! It's got a kind of the original sonic game(the arcade version!) kind of style going on!

Really informative video, I bloody love the MD version. One of my favourite games for the system and simply iconic. :-)

I should have went through the whole can!

Wasn't aware of all those other games. The PS game looked really sweet.

Strider was the 1st game I went to at my local Arcade in 1989. It was awesome!
Nothing beat the arcade version then graphics wise.
My friend came over with the Genesis game in early 1990 and it was a great port for it's time.
Great series, and great nostalgia...
And great series overview as usual...

I really need to check out that Manga if they have an English version.

first of all (just to correct you) metal gear for the nes was also not made by the same people so metal gear 2 for the nes is not the only one. also i like what robman is wearing, where did he get that nintendo rehab shirt? i might get it one day.
p.s. i agree they do need to make a remake of strider (or maybe a sequel with a remake of the original as an
unlockable).
thanks

Hey, another excellent episode, giving a great review of a series I hadn't heard of before now! Looks like a terrific action platformer; I'll have to keep an eye out for the NES cartridge. Or hope that the Turbo CD or Genesis versions hit the Virtual Console.
Seems like Capcom gave U.S. Gold the job of producing all their black sheep. They developed the Mega Man game on the Game Gear, too.

Grooveraider 2 years ago
Boy was I disappointed with the NES game. It wasn't the arcade game. It was somekind of quest game and the controls were pretty awful. I went back to playing the coin-op until Sega announced a straight port of Strider on the Sega Genesis. I was estatic of the conversion at the time. I ended up with a Mega Drive copy in Xmas'90 . It was a slightly better version due to the artwork on the casing and the digitized phrase "All forms of old Gods...Dieeeeee!" missing from U.S. copy.
Grooveraider 2 years ago
It was probably the most memorable Xmas I had - a copy of Strider Hiryu and Sword of Vermillion ^_^ Mid '90s when the INTERNET became the household tool for me. I found someone online who was selling just the coin-op Jamma PCB of Strider for $100. I didn't have a Super Gun or anything to hook the game up and play. So I held on to the board until I had enough money for a Super Gun device. Again, I was estatic to have THE ARCADE GAME at home at last ! Today, I still own the CPS-1 board ^_^
Grooveraider 2 years ago
I never got the hate for SOV. I thought it was a good RPG. Strider was one of my top 5 favorite Genesis games. It was a nearly flawless port of the arcade game.
A lot of people didn't like the NES version, and while it did pale by comparison, I didn't think it was that bad. Strider 2, it's pretty unanimous... it sucked.
JunmaiShu 2 years ago
@JunmaiShu - Did you play Strider in the arcades before the NES game released ? I guess at the time Capcom rubbed me the wrong way when they opted to change Strider into a quest game with "floaty-like" controls. They did a similar thing with "Willow" that year (1990 ) which I loved the arcade side-scroller. But the Willow RPG on the NES was pretty good even though I prefered the arcade game.
I really liked Strider 2 - especially after that AWFUL U.K. attempt with Strider Returns - lol
Grooveraider 2 years ago
Yes, I spent countless hours (and quarters) in arcades in my youth. It's actually painful to me to walk by video arcades these days and see nobody in there, save 1 person jumping around on a DDR pad. Some of my favorites were: Galaga, Ms. Pac Man, Punchout, Yie ar Kung Fu, and Afterburner (I thought the moving cockpit you sat in was so cool when it first came out). I got into Street Fighter II Championship Edition as well.
I thought Willow was a decent RPG too.

Pretty hilarious how they screwed up the two discs in Strider 2 (i.e. the Disc that says Strider 2 is actually Strider 1, and vis versa). I've tried tracking down a copy of it for a decent price and have had no such luck.
