However, when Derek is on his "it's not what it seems" rant to Brom, he holds out two pictures. One of a mouse, one of a dragon. So, I suppose, we're led to believe that the "great animal" is, in fact, a dragon.

Again, though, it's no specified. This just reminded me of it. :)

Nice to see Snow White stand up for herself without inexplicably becoming Xena but it's really kinda sad seeing her fearlessly run up to the villain and pound on his chest only for him to be completely unaffected.

Note how only Thunderella actually uses her powers in the climax. Moonbeam and Marina were basically non-entities throughout the whole thing.
