  • I took this clip off of public viewing since it served its purpose. I was asked to perform a review by MAS & to provide visual references so I did. Since the clip is several years old & had over 500k hits, I felt it was time to retire it. Concerning flaming, people can say whatever they wish about my videos. Since this is a public forum, they are entitled to voice their opinions. Thanks for watching.

  • i like the way he sheath his sword lol :P

  • thats the way ur supposed to do it

  • woo my katana vid got featured watch it plz!!

  • buuuuuuuuuuuuuu +

  • i am getting myself a katana soon and do u cut dry bamboo or like still green?

  • I use both green & dry bamboo as targets; however, using these materials can be very dangerous. One small mistake & the blade could break. Please have the proper training & supervision before attempting test cutting practice.

  • T'es tout naz, t'es emporté par ton gros Q quand tu frappe. Stop le MacDo.

  • He isn't trying to show us how good he is, he is simply demonstrating the sharpness of the blade.

  • i have 4katana´s in my room and i am far better than him -.-

  • LOL! 1:53 !

  • uho iiotoko

  • is it me or he draws the katana like somone with no training whtsoever ?well he doesnt even pull the slightest bit the tsuba to draw easier .Well thats me and i am no expert...

  • No it isn't just you. He definitely isn't skilled.

  • lol so it really isnt just me seing this a bit shabby?

  • I've sparred against 5th Kyu Kendo students with more skill than this guy.

  • You liars, thats not John Belushi.

  • rofl

  • slow ...

  • HUP ... HUP ... HUP ... HUP O.o' ?

    Lolz ...

  • HUP???? he must be a Radio Birdman fan

  • so where can a person get a real katana or a ninjato?

  • Japan.

  • internets.

  • needs to work on his technique.

  • one cut and bye bye world

  • 綺麗な太刀筋ですね。

    あなたはまさに日本の侍ですね。

    You are just Japanese Samurai.

  • nan da????

  • thats a lot of firewood!

  • banzaj!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Do a video and show us then.....

  • dude there's a video in the related ones called "katana cutting contest", check that out

  • this dude sounds like a barking dog

  • yo hago lo mismo rascao..y con un machete oxidado..cortandole la pinga a un burro..vaya pal carajo.

  • pero cerra el orto boludo

  • Technically horibble cutting. though of course he cuts through all the bamboo and tatami, the way he cuts is out of proportion. Massive swings with no body control or balance. Then again, it's just a cutting test..not a real tatami omote demonstration.

  • I love how he gets progressivly louder as he adds more sticks.

    Aut!

    Aut!!

    AUT!!

  • and now! 3 Swordstyle à la Lorenor Zorro xD

  • JA DAS DAS ----AB---- IST SEHE ICH

  • 1:39

  • rouruni kenshi is much better :P ^^

  • is it just me or does his footwork and ballance seem a bit off/ out of sync? ive always been trained to flow, but he seems a bit more forceful with his moves.. like hes swinging with his arms and only following with his body.. (im sorry if im wrong, im only commenting from the general sword training ive had, so i dont know if that is intentional with the style he is using. if so, please let me know)

  • Well, to be honest... the problem probably comes from the fact that he is apparently.... Not Asian, That's kind of important. But really besides that one scream yelp at 1:52 , He was pretty good at cutting =]

  • 1:49 ??

  • because he's not asian means he's bad at being a swordsman? thats a stereotype. usually true, but not always

  • Maybe is about the style indeed... the way he sheates the sword is reminiscent of iaido... But then again my main style is not representative of current martial arts, since is a Nihon Kobudo... Tatsumi Ryuu. But it indeed look odd.

  • if you keep clicking on 1:39 it looks like he's dancing

  • lol it does actually witch is weird!!

  • oh my god... xD how did you figured this out? :D

  • fierce swordsmanship...bow.

  • its an l6 blade right? does that automatically mean its made from bainite too or no?

  • The bainite & martensite properties are formed during the tempering process.

  • 1:50 lol AEE

  • Actually, when you finish sheathing the sword, you should pull the saya towards the sword, not push the sword the final way down.

Saya meets sword, then you place the saya back to it's original position.

  • Proper chiburi/noto may not only vary on the task at hand, but also from school to school.

  • I love he sheathing of the sword, it's so prettie XD

  • Very impressive *bear in mind i know very little of this sort of thing

    but still pretty awesome!

  • this is test cutting (tameshigiri) he doesnt have to do it quik like as a opponent was coming at him thats keiko so stop leaving stupid comments

  • This performer has been very skilled.

    The Katana cuts very well.

However, to demonstrate the performance, the user should be very skilled.

It doesn't cut like this even if the amateur suddenly has KATANA.

  • dude...how slow is that foot work...the sheathing is impressive.

  • the way your cutting not only telegraphs much, it also leaves you completely open before and after you cut.

you would die quickly in randori.

  • Tameshigiri is not keiko, they test & require different skills.

  • this is true, but shouldn't you cut tatami the same way you would cut an opponent?

  • VERY GOOD

  • i think he fears don´t made the cut completly and uses his strengt to secure...for this don´t let the sword do the job.

  • Why is everyone hating on this guy's shit?

God, everything is an e-peen battle on youtube nowadays.

Post a video showing you can do a better job, or leave the man alone.

  • he needs to strike a little faster i mean he wates way to much to swing

  • I'd like to see you do that in a vid because you have to tense up as you swing otherwise you'll only do yourself more harm than good, if not just plain break your arm. I've practiced some Ken-Jitsu myself and I know this much as an amateur. Also the katana is just a pretty sharp blade in general so you have to be rather careful as you use it.

  • ok imagin u were in feudel japan. your in the middle of a war. your not going to wait 5 min wene some guy is running at u with a swoard

  • Then just go by instinct as well, I can understand where you're coming from to this degree. I've also practiced the Fairbairn system so I know what you're talking about. Plus what I was referring to was if you're already in combat and may be fully prepared (or as prepared as one can get in a fight) in general.

  • Tameshigiri is not keiko (test cutting is not sparring), they test different skills. In addition, when cutting bamboo, one needs to cut in between the bamboo's knuckles so as to prevent blade damage. This pin pointing can slow one's cutting.

  • He acts as though he is chopping wood and not wielding a very sharp and light sword. You do not need to have a very bracing and forceful approach to wield one of these swords effectively. Let the sword do the work......

  • With properly soaked single roll tatami omote or wara, not much power is needed to make a successful cut. However, thick bamboo, especially dry or multiple poles, does require a certain amount of strength.

  • he loses too much balance and twists too much, but he also uses too much brute forse and he's too loud, just an observatio

  • Very impressive but I have to say that the swordsman seems to be over-extending himself, like he his having to swing harder because he is not quite close enough to his target and as a result becoming off balance. Just an observation.

  • amazing O_o

  • pretty good.. no offence meant just observation but you have so much hesitation in your swings you should plan your moves befor drawing the blade so its at ease instead of hover ur sword in the air for 0.5 seconds to find a spot to cut.

    peace

  • pensa se quando la rimette nel fodero sbaglia e si maciulla un mano XP

  • maybe not

    saw the prices

    looks like L6 steel too

grate steel but you better keep it oiled !!!

  • Most suitable production katana are made from high carbon steel, regardless if it is L6, T10 or what have you. Due to the carbon content, constant care such as oiling is necessary to prevent oxidation.

  • wow

lifetime warranty on a sword huh?

I'm sure this excludes chips.... but hmmmm..

    maybe my new machete eh?

let me go look at prices...

  • As long as the cutting is in context to traditional training (cutting tatami omote, wara & bamboo properly), the blade is guaranteed not to bend, chip or break.

If you want to use it as a "machete", you would be wasting your money. MAS offers products designed for serious sword art practitioners, it makes no other claim.

  • at the particular time I made that comment I had a large patch of 30+ft bamboo that needed cleared

came across this while looking at bamboo online

could have really used you there buddy ;)

  • I may be wrong but to me it seems he put his back a little too much in some hits.

Maybe it was the purpose of the test to go full strenght ?

  • @ tomurso

were all cuts made with same edge

    ie. no sharpening in between?

  • The test was performed all at the same time & there was no sharpening in between. MAS swords are tempered to withstand the rigors of traditional tameshigiri/begi (test cutting), even for bamboo. In addition, they have a lifetime warranty on the blade itself.

IMO, they offer some of the best productions swords available.

  • he acts like the shout is supplying the power. the katana is a extension of your body.

  • The use of a kiai is multi-fold but maintaining energy is one of them.

  • Yay...

  • Whats the point?

  • It could save his life if he gets attacked by a bunch of drunken sticks one night. XD

  • As stated in the clip description, this was a blade performance test asked to be performed by the manufacturer. Several traditional targets (wara & bamboo) with varying degrees of difficulty were used to test the sword's cutting ability.

A thorough written critique was made & can be seen on the links provided in the description.

  • too slow =/

  • not being racist but it seems unnatural him not being japanese

  • Martial arts are meant to benefit everyone if they wish to train, regardless of background.

  • hmm...

    I'm gonna research about this..

  • oh yeah and telegraphing

  • too stiff

just like golf, you don't have to kill the ball

    Move like the bamboo.....

    your body is a whip

your blade is at the end

    and follow through

    this guy doesn't scare me

I've been in front of sword attacks so fast I couldn't get out of the way

  • id be scared to sheath that katana that fast lol

  • 1:14 nice up cut!!!

  • need more fluidity, less power... i think

    peace!

  • The Korean Kumdo Association is under the International Kendo Federation. Within these groups, this would make make Kumdo & Kendo the same, otherwise they would not not be allowed to compete together.

Japanese Kendo today is a specific martial art. The term kumdo in Korea is a generic term so several organizations with differing curriculums & agendas exist.

Deceit is nothing new & affects every facet of life. Be wise enough to discern the lies & respectful enough to not be a part them.

  • you can notice how stiff he is compared to a japanese, he uses to much strengh instead of speed, both work great, but i prefer speed

  • How one moves is not really dependent on race but on the particular area of study, what task one is attempting & the amount of experience.

Attempting to cut thick dry bamboo depending on speed alone will prove to be futile. Alignment, angle, balance, tip control, coordination, strength, etc., in addition to adequate speed is necessary for proper execution.

No one is perfect & the key to proficiency is consistent legitimate training.

  • nice sword and good demos but way to repetative

  • Well, repetition is the way to perfect technique.

  • i want a Katana

  • sloppy

  • you are amater

  • how many bamboo trees got murdered to make this awesome video?!?

  • lol biotoxin21

  • i never knew how to protect myself from bamboo. Luckily i found this video and i can sleep at night now.

  • hahahahahahaha

  • you're leaning in to much and your footwork is progressively more sloppy as the video goes on. Otherwise nice sword

  • leet ninja

  • i bet the neighbors are like "wtf is that noise'' jk jk thats pretty cool dude

  • he's so ninja

  • so if we ever go to war with bamboo we use katanas?

  • HAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHa

  • ;) haha

  • lmao u yell to hard sounds like your struglling rofl but nice katana

  • i'm a 2nd dan in aikido and he seems to misjudge the distance also he is sheathing the blade wrong

  • I am rather confused by your comment since Aikiken has no batto nor tameshigiri aspect.

Secondly, the type of chiburi/noto will depend on the ryu & what is being accomplished. For example, Toyama Ryu only has 1, whereas Nakamura Ryu has 8.

Lastly, bamboo is not as forgiving as tatami omote or wara. If the distance or cutting angle were off, the bamboo would not be cut.

  • i was saying that the balance looks off when striking from from horizontal positions with the bamboo like the blade wasn't sharp enough or you were putting to much force behind it

  • The only mayokogiri (horizontal cut) was made on wara (rice straw), not bamboo. Because I was asked by the manufacturer MAS to test the sword's cutting ability, I used traditional materials that were difficult to cut.

The mayokogiri was made to dry, double mat wara which is very cut resistant. In addition, dry bamboo, wara wrapped bamboo & multiple poles were used to thoroughly test the sword. As you can see, it successfully cut the materials with no damage to ha or koshirae.

  • cool...

  • why doesnt he use battojutsu lol

  • notice how when there are more bamboo targets his screams get louder, and you don't have to shout when you strike, ruins the element of surprise. =D fun video

  • Hmm you are right its always better when the sticks are caught off guard

  • haaap haap haap xDDD

  • hahahha pooor dude, he DOESNT know anything about cutting skills like real samurais...

  • atleast when he goes back to the us, he'll know how to cut trees and twigs when he goes camping. LOL

  • Ikikkaku Madarame from bleach!!!

    Bankaiiii

  • I am Black Belt in Daito Ryu Aiki Jitsu and Chuden Level in Eishin Ryu Bato Jutsu Iaido. He looks...really off.

  • freeze at 0:09 and you'll see his back foot is almost off the ground, and even if he uses his back to strike he seems to be a tad too stiff. Then again I don't study this art so what I just said means nothing.

  • bonita katana

  • muy afilada.

  • Wow is Bleach me gusta

  • jajaja pasate por mi canal i veras mi zampakuto ashimare

  • he kinda looks like some1 from bleach

    lol

  • at 2:03 exactly. watch as he strikes at the end he has barely one foot off the ground. he is so off balance. anyone whose good will see that and dodge accordingly that one foot barely on the ground means you could do all sorts of fun stuff.

  • i noticed the same thing. He has issues with balance because i think he has problems setting the proper range at times with foot work.

  • sodenoshurayuki yeah i highly doubt it dude this guy is good and your just so arrogant to believe your better than him

  • 2:43 funny XDDDD

  • why is he barking?..lol

  • haha this guy is such a noob my granddad could do better wait he can he has like 30 diffrent samurai swords

  • yes but can you cut off a piece and then cut that very piece that was just cut? Only then will you know the path of the samurai... xD

  • too slow man, meh i can really talk. i've just started tameshigiri at my dojo, but i have been doing kendo for 9years and iaido for almost 5. youngest instructor in the city, yeayea!

  • how mutch was that thing?

  • too slow man too slow

  • he's making alot of firewood xD

  • I am better than this guy

  • and a lot more arrogant:)

  • 2 bamboo 3 bamboo but small.

  • Need More speed buddy. Nice job tho.

  • how you get in.

  • haha his lil thing after he cut somethin down reminded me of link..lol

  • Wow... certo che fare legna così è più divertente...

  • LOL! You almost cut the tree down at 2:15. Nice video by the way.

  • its a cut test isintit to test just the cutting power of the sword not the twquneqr

  • I've got a tree in my front yard....if you're not doing anything this afternoon......

  • this dude is so slow comparing to Japanese

  • doing this must be really fun!

  • mushashi miyoto ,

  • this guy makes so funny ass sounds XD

  • Obviously you have never done this then, the sounding he is making helps expel air tightening the core for a more powerful attack.

  • why doesnt he just breath out... and not sound like a fool?

  • Tradition.

  • Wrong, doing this will cause tension and in battle will telegraph your intention, a strike is suppose to be fast, fluent, and functional. Even Miyamoto Musashi has said this in the Book of Five Rings, Fire Scroll, under "Three Shouts", 4th paragraph.

Shouting and crying are tools in japanese swordsmanship to mount a rhythm and to stir the opponent with fear. Therefore throws him off rhythm to where you can overcome him easily.
