Beoulve (plural) is pronounced Beowulfs or maybe Beowolves in English. Beoulf (singular) is the Old English version of the name Beowulf - the name of a probably fictional hero in a very old bit of poetry. The "probably fictional" fits quite well with the protagonist in FFT, so I'm guessing that's why they chose Beowulf as his surname. Why they use Old English spelling is anyone's guess. Mine would be because they're Japanese and thus can't help being weird :p
"When they die and pass three turns like that, they complete their focus and turn into a shiny little crystal". Gotta love the FF XIII reference there!
@PortsmouthSk8ters IMSURE AS HELL not HCBailly but i would recommend the PSP Version if you want more classes and SECRET CHARACTERS! (i dont know if the secret characters are in the PS1 version) and you may not listen to me but consider both
These reason you do so little damage is because the zodiac sign. if you are highly compatible you will annihilate them. And etc. Check those out. That is why capricorn was not the best choice...lol
LOL on the party member thing. When I was 10 or so I played this game and had no idea about that. I gamesharked my way through a good portion of the game with just Ramza. Fun times.
Funny story of my childhood. When i was 8 and i bought this game i didnt read the book so one this first mission i didnt know how to set up troops so i only had ramza and delita and i some how won the match fun day lol only took 5 tries xD keep up the great work HC im glad you make great Lp's with some of the greatest games ive played. youre commentary is great keep it up! :D
Does killing Delita cause any negative consequences? Whenever I play any story map with him in it, I make sure to annihilate him right away so he doesn't steal my kills.
hcbailly just search some of the voice acting cut scenes (more accurately the one where Ramza is in pray at a church and Delita shows up) cause a guy says Ramza's last name in the cut scenes
I remember the first few times I played this battle. I had no idea I could use more than just Ramza and Delita. I got curbstomped. It didn't take me long to realize that this ain't a normal FF game, where the main character can wade through enemies even at lvl 1. :P
12:48 when the enemy dies it can either turn into a crystal or a treasure chest. the chest will contain an item that the perished unit was equipped with before death and the crystal like HCBailly said sometimes also has abilities available to learn for free. just to clarify, the abilities able to learn are based off of the skills that the particular perished unit actually had (yes computer characters do have a skill set) BUT those abilities are only available IF you have the job class available
You could influence AT by having your Chemist attack instead of Wait. When you don't use Move or Act, that unit's AT will start off higher than if you use both. If you forgo your turn completely by using Wait, your AT for your next turn will start off even higher than if you Moved or Acted that turn.
I never heard anyone didn't like the "Surrender or die in obscurity" line, but I see why, because it doesn't fit with Ramza's later characterization as someone who doesn't care about class. That line of his is kind of an insult towards the fact that the thieves aren't upper class like Ramza is.
@drunyon214 Well, at the start of the game, Ramza's the same as the rest of his noble classmates. He changes how he thinks as he goes on this adventure.
I remember in the solo Ramza challenge that this first level is the most ridiculous unfair fight in the whole game.

@dwab321: Yeah, if you already have a PS3 you may as well download it. Having a digital copy of a game like this is worth WAY more than $10 IMO. You don't have to worry about load times and like HC said, you wouldn't have to worry about wear and tear on the disc. I only wish they had SaGa Frontier and the Legend of Dragoon on PSN...

When starting I usually choose who I'm going to use based on the brave and faith they have (friggin annoying system). I know later you can alter the stats, and that if you character gets too much faith they leave your party or too little brave they flee as well.

@DiogooSampaioo Thanks. I'm a partner with The Game Station, which is effectively the same thing. Of course, I don't do this for a living, but it's better than a sharp stick in the eye. :)
its sucks when i had a summoner and a squire goes and uses stone. it knocks her off the ledge and the fall kills her. it was an elevation of i think about 7 or 8 it wasnt fun.
The funny thing about Final Fantasy Tactics is there are "Bosses", but only a few, and they are almost invariably easier than the fights leading up to them.

The first time I played this game, I didnt understand how to place units... I played through the first three fights with Ramza solo. I almost quit because I thought it was stupid lol.
One thing I did that made this game easy was putting ramza through the lancer and samuria job classes. I gave him the all jump ability of the lancer to make his jump height infinite. Then gave him the two hands ability of the samuria as well as its all block ability. Which despite the description does in fact block arrows and magic. Then I kept him as a knight to use the knight swords. I was doing 999 damage every turn and taking 0 damage each battle. Ramza solo'd the game for me this way.
How does the height notated in the top right corner affect the battles? Never got too far into this game, tactical RPGs really aren't my thing, so I don't know if they explain it later.
@JeffroTheMan1 The terrain affects your ability to move and attack. Different classes have different jump stats. If their jump stat is high, they can jump up and down greater distances, essentially being able to get around easier.
Also, if an enemy is too high above or too low below you, you can't attack them. Even if you're in an adjacent panel
One thing you can do is abuse the enemy chemists infinite potions. If you have 2 characters attack him between his turns, he'll use his potions and you can get as much exp, jp, and hopefully job levels before the second battle. Personally, I prefer to get all the squires 300 jp by the end of the battle so they can learn accumulate, which I'm sure HCBailly will explain in the next episode.
One thing i did that made this game incrediably easy was have ramsa and another character be monks. I have them the dual wield ability from ninjas so that they could unarmed attack twice in one shot. Just the way the mechanic works punchs wind up being insanely strong late game if you're a monk or have the right skill. add that with counter attack to kill anyone that hits you and the monks other skills like the ranges attack and it almost seems to me like a game breaker. They're unstoppable.
@Skaeryll Yes, but at least you can try and grab their crystal (before the enemies do). There occasionally are some allies (usually guests) that cannot dissapear though, and the battle is lost by some key person dying. If Ramza is in a battle, and he dies, the game is automatically over. Pertains to some others as well.
@Terrafrit Try and search just for Final Fantasy Tactics, the PSP version is named War of the Lions. Maybe it's not out in the UK yet? I know the EU gets different releases on PSN so you might be out of luck for now :/
WOAH WOAH WOOAH DID I JUST HEAR WHAT I THOGUHT I HEARD?!?! (the mydicks bigger that your dick my dicks bigger thanks yours) I hope I didnt Hc are you a lil tipsy
The first time I played this battle I didn't know that I had other party members and so Ramza and Delita fought alone. Needless to say, history was changed that day.
Elevation, basically. H stands for height, so it tells you where you stand based on the ground floor. I don't really remember if it can also go negative if you go underground, or if it usually considers that the bottommost tile is 0. Anyway, it's an indicator for knowing if you can actually him someone. Usually attacks have a limit of 1 so you won't attack someone who's higher up than you past that. Same goes for magic as well, spells also have an elevation limit to them
Beoulve (plural) is pronounced Beowulfs or maybe Beowolves in English. Beoulf (singular) is the Old English version of the name Beowulf - the name of a probably fictional hero in a very old bit of poetry. The first time I played this game, I didnt understand how to place units... I played through the first three fights with Ramza solo. I almost quit because I thought it was stupid lol.
I've beat it at least 6 times now.
Loffter 6 months ago
One thing I did that made this game easy was putting ramza through the lancer and samuria job classes. I gave him the all jump ability of the lancer to make his jump height infinite. Then gave him the two hands ability of the samuria as well as its all block ability. Which despite the description does in fact block arrows and magic. Then I kept him as a knight to use the knight swords. I was doing 999 damage every turn and taking 0 damage each battle. Ramza solo'd the game for me this way.

Now that You're delving into Ivalice, I wonder if You're considering Let's Playing Final Fantasy XII, HCBailly.
pornace 6 months ago
So can I, it's just the way he mentions it in the vid made me think that.
TheShadowDragon26 6 months ago
I think I've played FFT 10 times without realizing I could add more party members in the first battle...

lol, nice 1984 reference with the lights :)

How does the height notated in the top right corner affect the battles? Never got too far into this game, tactical RPGs really aren't my thing, so I don't know if they explain it later.
JeffroTheMan1 6 months ago
@JeffroTheMan1 The terrain affects your ability to move and attack. Different classes have different jump stats. If their jump stat is high, they can jump up and down greater distances, essentially being able to get around easier.
Also, if an enemy is too high above or too low below you, you can't attack them. Even if you're in an adjacent panel
Mathsavesme 6 months ago

I think i always gave my chemist a gun.

Final Fantasy X-2, HC?
I'm referring to "Don't ask me, I'm just a kid."
TheMateriaNinja 6 months ago
There are a couple of "boss time" moments in this game. The first one taking place in a church if you know what i mean
mrmattjohnson1 6 months ago
I consider a "boss fight" when you have to...
*spoilers*
kill one of those zodiac monsters =o

Does anyone else find it ironic that Louie Anderson is a judge on a Food Network reality show? Hcbailly is the Final Fantasy master
mhall47685 6 months ago
@mhall47685 Ironic? No.
Appropriate? Yes.

Hey HCBailly... If a ally dies is it like Fire Emblem where you lose them for good?
Skaeryll 6 months ago
@Skaeryll Yes if you dont revive them in time then they are gone forever.
Amerac133 6 months ago
@Skaeryll Yes, but at least you can try and grab their crystal (before the enemies do). There occasionally are some allies (usually guests) that cannot dissapear though, and the battle is lost by some key person dying. If Ramza is in a battle, and he dies, the game is automatically over. Pertains to some others as well.

The art style in this game is certainly...interesting. In their display pics, most of the characters look like they're ridiculously bored.

I consider any fight that says Defeat someone other than all enemies to be a boss fight.

Why can't I find this game in the ps1 classics section on PSN? (U.K) Only the PsP version is available when i search for it.
Terrafrit 6 months ago
@Terrafrit Try and search just for Final Fantasy Tactics, the PSP version is named War of the Lions. Maybe it's not out in the UK yet? I know the EU gets different releases on PSN so you might be out of luck for now :/
xravenx24fe 6 months ago
@xravenx24fe I think your right. Final fantasy tactics was never released in the EU, only America and Japan.
Terrafrit 6 months ago
I wouldn't show random battles, but note when you get into one, otherwise this will be a long LP.

@TheShadowDragon26
I can think of a few actual moments where saying BOSS TIME would be completely valid....
XGiftedGamerX 6 months ago
@XGiftedGamerX Oh I think anyone who plays this game knows what your talking about. Like a certain shall we say "night" ramza meets later?
MasterLordRoy1 6 months ago
@MasterLordRoy1
As well as a few certain monsters complete with exclusive themes.
XGiftedGamerX 6 months ago
The first time I played this battle I didn't know that I had other party members and so Ramza and Delita fought alone. Needless to say, history was changed that day.

Awwwww! Boss time is my favorite thing you say

I usually like to have my guys act every turn even if it means attacking my own guys for EXP and JP.
KJYKJY1985 6 months ago
@KJYKJY1985
It's funny how that's actually a good thing to do for exp and JP....
Using potion while only having lost like 2 hp... still counts! ^_^

I never quite got the 2h, 4h, 8h at the top-right corner there during battles. What do they signify, exactly?
KeysofIDproductions 6 months ago
@KeysofIDproductions Height
Terrafrit 6 months ago
@KeysofIDproductions
