  • @tyuru2

It's also here 0:58, but captain hindsight probably figured it out already

  • i cant believe such a beautiful song won a grammy award. i hope this serves as an inspiration for others to make award winning music in games.

  • Where can I get this song!!! I want to play it on a loop while I play Civ 5!!!

  • 0:27 big booty yetu yetu uliye

  • @arnoudvos

    cannot be unheard, you douche

  • FU*CK PARTY ROCKER THIS IS REAL MUSIC!!!

  • To me this music brings so much precious memories. One the best games I've played. And this music was the icing.

  • it always took me ages to actually start playing a game on this because I wanted to hear the song all the way through

  • @gravy89 Ditto.

  • @gravy89

    Hah! Over and over again.

  • I've loved video games for as long as I can remember, I've loved video game music for as long as I was reasonably intelligent, I've loved Civilization 4 since I came to be familiar with it, I've loved this song since I've actually taken the time to listen to it, and, may I ask, is it normal for these lyrics to cause a sudden longing to learn Swahili? I don't even know the Our Father in Latin - which I should.

  • This won a Grammy didn't it?

  • Baba yetu, yetu uliye

    Mbinguni yetu, yetu, amina!

    Baba yetu, yetu, uliye

    Jina lako litukuzwe.

  • I saw "In keeping with my previous run with Age of Wonders music, I now am working on a series of Civilization 4 music."

    And immediatly subscribed

  • Some songs are epic, this song is more than that.

  • I heard my school's choir learning this song.

  • Comment removed

  • Doin this on choir wth Big Band

  • what language is this song in?

  • @dukeb9 Swahili. It roughly translates to the Christian prayer, "Our Father".

  • @DarksporkLeader thank you

  • @dukeb9 Swahili

  • Why did they make Civilization V theme so fucking boring? THIS is a real theme song!

  • Ignorant people, know nothing about the crusades, it was fought because the Muslim empire invaded Byzantium(they were provoked) and the emperor of the Byzantine needed help so he came crying to the pope for help, the pope saw this a way to gain land and power. And so the crusades began... Oh yea and it was all under the guise of religion. PS Sorry I thought I'd fill in the people reading the argument below so they know the background of the crusades)

  • @Goranora2 Thank you for all of that.

  • @Goranora2 That doesn't make religion bad, actually. Those are human actions.

  • OMG! Who can dislike this song???

  • @JohnLgns The pope and his men! I don't know those.

  • Comment removed

  • @Rogerroids

People find excuses to fight. Do you think that the Crusades would have happened if Europe didn't need to get rid of surplus noble population? And do you think that if everyone were lovey-dovey humanists they would have turned down seizing the rich Levant? They would have found something else, like "spreading civilization," to motivate the conquest.

Education, free trade, and nuclear weapons, not irreligion, are the primary guarantors of modern peace. Correlation is not causation.

  • I'm an atheist, but I still love religious art, architecture, music (at least some of it), literature and so on. They are an important part of our history as a species. Do I think religion has been and continues to do more harm than good? Yes. However, I'm not going to let that stop me from enjoying music like this.

  • @Jostedalsosten It also helps when you don't understand the language the song's in. rofl

  • I prefer this track on the CiV 5 menu

  • Quiet with the religion argument shit and listen to the awesome music.

  • Beautiful song for a beautiful game

  • nice music

  • "Baba Yetu" means "baby jesus" in Swahili. I think this song is so damned inappropriate for a game that was meant for everybody to play. Especially when it's supposed to represent the whole world. No christian crap in my games please.

  • @Smorfty YEAH! WHY HAVE A SONG ABOUT RELIGION IN A GAME THAT ALLOWS GERMANS TO ADOPT JUDAISM, AND ARABS TO BE BUDDHIST!

    Oh wait.....

  • I allways play germans and ALLWAYS adopt judaism, call it irony. religion is crap anyway, Only thing good about it is this: try to help your fellow man. We dont need religion,It exists only for one reason : humanity.s fear of death. Only when death will be overcome, only then it will die. Until then it keeps humanity in check from losing her mind from fear of the nothingness that comes. Not a believer in all, but i sure hope one of the relligions is right and there is something after.

  • @neddhu >All Germans hate the Jews

You are incredibly stupid, please consider seeing a specialist.

  • @Wackytov that makes no sense!

  • @Wackytov ok... if i really cared i would be insulted but im not, it.s just some virtual guy writting some bad stuff...bla bla bla.... *enjoys music*

  • @Dosshow the german leaders in civ are bismark, friedrich the great and charlemange(holy roman empire still counts as germany to me)...none of them lived in the 20th century...2 of them were prussians and one has been dead for nearly a thousand years...germany is not nazi-germany in civ and the leaders represent everything except nationalsocialsm and therefore germany+judism=lol is complete crap...just a game

  • @Smorfty Honestly - shut up. Seriously. I'm atheist (and I assume you are as well) and I want to smack you. The fact that you decry a beautiful piece of music because of the message it contains is abhorrent. You are the kind of person that gives atheists a bad name - it is not ANYONE's place to put down the beliefs of others, even if you disagree. You are welcome to spread the truth - just don't be a dick about it.

  • @hayden0103 While I agree with you that Smorfty was completely out-of-line in their comment, I'd like to put out: truth is what one takes it as. Your truth is completely different from my truth. I'm not trying to shove my religion down your throat, I'm saying that your wording could've been different, that's all. ^_^;

  • @Smorfty While I can appreciate your irrational fear that someone, somewhere, might somehow be inadvertently exposed to a religious reference at some point in their life, I'm honestly more worried that a guy who decides the Swahili word for 'father' must actually be for 'baby' because hey, it sounds like the English word for 'baby', would presume to force his own, very limited world view on everyone else 'for their own good.'

  • @Smorfty it means OUR FATHER in swahili.

  • This is what I call a song unlike todays crap wich has lyrics that does nothing but make you wonder wtf you were listening to

  • I remembered not uninstalling the demo just so I could keep listening to the music (I never have the game).

  • Religion is pointless and does more harm than good. Now that that's settled, everyone shut up and enjoy the music.

  • @RogerRoids Yep.

  • @RogerRoids Agreed

  • @RogerRoids That's as bad an attitude as the people who use religion for bad purposes. Don't let a few extremists (of whatever faith) make such sweeping generalisations of peoples' beliefs.

  • @Reikhardt You know what has caused the most violence and wars in all of human history? You guessed it, Religion. The world would be far better without stratification based on religion. It's not a "few" extremists if entire countries declare wars on each other based on the religious majority of each.

  • @RogerRoids If you really consider what CAUSED all of those wars, religion was just an excuse; money, power, and reputation tended to be more of the cause, with the will of gods or God or the Jade Emperor or whatever being the excuse. You know when the term "Mandate of Heaven" was first used? By the first Zhou emperor in order to excuse his takeover of China; he didn't say anything about it until after the fact. He was after power and money, not a deity's favor.

  • @RikoZerame The. Crusades. Don't try and tell me that it wasn't a religious war. Religion has created intolerance throughout history. Look at the fact that many Americans think that all muslims are terrorist, only because they don't follow the fucking bible. Give me a break. Genocide and nonsensical fighting has been caused because two sides believe in different gods, even though scientifically they;re both wrong. Fundamentalists reject science just to follow some ferry tail. It corrupts society

  • @RikoZerame While I agree that Jihad is total bullshit, much nonsensical conflict has arisen in history as a result of religious differences, and cultural differences based on religion. Look at the famous scientists that have been persecuted and killed because their findings (which were correct) didn't obey the religious books and laws that were in effect for those countries. It goes against logic and hinders society's ability to advance. People use it as a defense mechanism.

  • Pfft civ 4 was clearly the better game.... and honestly come on... we hate to adimit it but we have all sat in the tital lobby and listened to this song for like 10 minutes

  • Cheery song for a good game :

  • Why wasent this in Civ 5 :(

  • Civilization 3 was the first Civ game i played and i loved it

  • You dont need to believe in religion or god to enjoy the song

  • @bstn11 Or, rather, you don't need to be a part of religion to believe in god.

  • @bstn11 True, I'm an atheist myself, I don't speak swahili :-), but I LOVE this song!

  • The face of every atheist once they realize this amazing song is about God is: D:

  • @Soullessdistraction I'm an atheist and I like this song. So I like Bach's "H-moll messe", Mozart's "Requiem" and many others. You know, if there was no religion those artist would create their music anyway...

  • @doktorkoyot Regardless of the religion aspect in the song, one can listen to whatever he likes to listen. If an atheist doesn't like the song he's simply ignorant.

  • It's incredible how a fuckin song makes us think about the past, present and future of the Humanity

  • @cacaman15 shut up.

  • @acalow1989 What did he do wrong?

  • @acalow1989 suck my dick u motherfucker

  • When I just a mere water girl growing up Nigeria, Africa, we would sing this song when the hunters returned with fresh tiger meat, then alas, I took an arrow to the knee.

  • this one is easily like 10X better than civ 5 main menu

  • Love this song! Makes me have peace at mind.

  • Colonization wasn't an expansion pack, it was a stand alone game. You don't need Civ 4 to play it.

  • @marmensol

It's the last. The first was Warlords, the second was Beyond the Sword, and the last was Colonization.

  • Hey guys, i have a question... Colonization is the first or the last expansion for Civiliation IV?

  • Love to listen to this when I paint. Best background music for doing anything creative.

  • I love this song so much :| Where did u get it?

  • That strange language is actually a demonic grimoire to call demons

  • @zmallic no... it's swahili

  • @garfield123food Ah yes, Swahili , tongue of the dark demons

  • @zmallic bullshit

  • @garfield123food , yes I can see u speak the ancient tongue well

  • @zmallic lol XD

  • I don't know what's being said, but it's EPIC.

  • nostalgia...

  • This this amazing. First time I played Civilization 4 I cried when I heard this. (I'm a guy) It's so peaceful, and emotional (:

  • I remember when I first got Civ 4 I was ...... Lord god this is epic! and just sat there listening to the music for half an hour in my room, my brother was like wtf, as I was 15 at the time I should be listening to rap but this just makes me want to add more good will to the world!

  • I love this kind of music. It takes you away from much of the mainstream garbage out there lol

  • First made-for-a-game song to win a Grammy award, and well-deserved.

  • That guy speaking french down there is talking about how ridiculous this song is, and also for this game.

  • This is an awesome song...

  • We're singing this for the choir Christmas concert at my school.

    Sounds even better a cappella

  • love this song

Amen!

Ojcze nasz, Jezu święć się imię Twoje.

Chleba naszego powszedniego daj nam dziś,

Odpuść nam nasze winy jako i my odpuszczamy innym,

    którzy zawinili przeciw nam

Nie wódź nas na pokuszenie, ale zbaw nas od złego na zawsze.

Przyjdź królestwo Twoje, bądź wola Twoja

Jak w niebie tak i na ziemi. (Amen)

  • We oftentimes see what is wrong with mankind, but this music also reminds me that there is also a lot of good within us.

  • @Scitech101 HALELU-(looks at religous debate in comments)-ahem- Well said my friend :)

  • I have never played this game

and even if I had it, i think I'd never pass the title screen anyway

  • I like this song because it's LONG!

  • I love this song and singing it in choir!!!

  • Love the fact that you can run Beyond the Sword with the original Civ 4 title screen.

This song is too fucking good to lose.

  • LISTEN TO THIS IN X2 SPEED!

  • I actually never played the game, I blame this music, I installed the game and never passed the title screen... -.-' ... :))

  • My friends are all getting Skyrim and Modern Warfare 3 right now, I'm still spending days on one game of Civ IV :)

  • Sigh... well at least I can't understand what the heck they're saying.

  • screw it i refuse to acknowledge it as the lords prayer so my only choice is to think about it as just senseless ramblings that hit good notes.

  • @alex39977 Good luck.

  • @alex39977 You're purely ignorant and have a very very superficial sense for music.Put aside the fact that it might be a prayer, put aside the fact that its in an african language, still you have a superbe song. Those other two facts only make it more wonderful than it is alredy.Try listening to a song you don't understand the lirics, just for the beauty of its melody.Do not judge after any atributes it has or does not have, take it as it is.Maybe your rasist, reason why you are against it?

  • @Aktaios001 How a person may or may not view music is subjective. though a do agree that it is a great song and that the fact that i didn't understand it was one of the key factors to why i liked it in the first place i never, i repeat never lowered my views of it because of its African origin but for that fact that religion played a role in it is the only reason for me to resent it. As for the "rasist"(its spelled racist) comment you have draw that conclusion out of your ass without evidence.

  • @alex39977

you're a funny ignorant guy, but don't worry, in the end you'll see the truth.

But by then it will be too late.

  • @hunter4hire Actually, it could be you that will see the truth when you die, you rot. “Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.”

    ― Marcus Aurelius

  • @hunter4hire The truth behind magic man? I highly doubt hes going to show his ass and explain why all evidence points to a non-theistic universe. So in a sense even if did exist there is no way that's he's the "good" guy. Hes like a dictator that sets you up to fail.

  • @alex39977 Um...either you are a troll, or very stupid and/or uneducated in this matter. Thus, I hope all reasonable people from both sides in this argue are gonna ignore you. Have a nice day, read a book.

  • @Veellinn Ad hominem attacks. Way to go.

  • @alex39977 What a meaningless existence without a god though. We like to throw around the word science as if it is THE explanation for everything. It takes as much faith to believe that we have evolved as it does to believe we were created. I personally prefer to believe I am a creative masterpiece than an accident of nature. "Hes like a dictator that sets you up to fail." We set ourselves up to succeed or fail. Just because God does not interfere does it make it his fault.

  • @cubeblocks You don't need religion to believe in God...

  • @Aktaios001 To further elaborate my reason for the dislike of religion is because i am an atheist and i see any superfluous supernatural views as immature and childish.

  • fuhhhh man now the shine of the song was taken away by religion. WHY DOES THE WORLD HAVE TO MOCK ME SO!

  • @alex39977

Religion is a very important aspect in human history. I'm atheist too, and I can see the cultural significance of religion. You forget that it was only until very recently that science advanced to a point where we can now start explaining the nature of the universe.

Besides, "our Father" can refer to a multitude of things: I personally prefer to think of it as Earth itself.

  • @mightyshockwave Yes i completely understand that point, but to put it as theme song for human history is unappealing considering all the other types of religion there are. Why not a song referring to Hinduism or better yet the Greek gods, these aren't very good examples but you get my point. It would seem vary egocentric to choose one religion over another. Thus i conclude that it should not have been a religious song as it may spark controversy. As for viewing it as merely our father,it's fine.

  • @alex39977 Maybe because it's in african the game developers assumed nobody would know it is a religious song.

  • @mightyshockwave isnt it mother earth......just saying

  • @mightyshockwave Or the sun. You can replace "God" with "The Sun" in a lot of ancient religious writings and it makes perfect sense. God keeps the darkness at bay, the darkness is evil. Pre historic civilizations feared the night due to lack of technology, thus the night was evil. Things like that. And this is coming from a Catholic, just something interesting I though you would enjoy. :)

  • @xXTheRush905Xx well yea the sun was seen has god not because of the darkness part because it is with that sun that all life lives the sun gives life...

  • @goku21060 Yea, I know, I just worded it wrong.

  • @mightyshockwave or you can be a pantheist like me!:D

  • @mightyshockwave well to be honest we have a very good understand of nature before science advantage as far as it did most of the so call discoveries we have founded where either founded before in the past or acknowledge to exist..

  • @goku21060

Before modern electrostatic theory, humans thought lightning was caused by vengeful spirits. Give me a few examples of what you're talking about. The only thing I can think of is Aristotle's atoms, but the argument for their existence was mostly philosophical and his conception was radically different than how they actually are.

  • @mightyshockwave I was born in to a Catholic family, so I am Catholic. But now that I have grown older, I kind of am seeing more "flaws" in religion. For example if you look at the enlightenment period of history where people started experimenting out of their religious ideals, they did great things. I am in such a dilemma!

  • @TheRockinryan

Well, whatever you decide, as long as you're a good person then that's all that matters. You don't need to believe in a god to love thy neighbor for the sake of trying to make a better world.

  • @mightyshockwave Science came to the point where we can start explaining the nature of the Universe?! By our own perception and the view, that is. And yet we dare to say that it's the only possible way of explaining and understanding. I find science as an obstacle to learning and gaining real knowledge. Forms, views, arrogance...all part of human perspective. Yet, it's funny to see an atheist talking about religion while never, actually, learnt about it in the first place. Another arrogance.

  • @c1k4ml3kc3

It's more arrogant to think that we alone are the special creation of a deity. Take a telescope and look at the enormous breadth of the universe. You think scientists just make up whatever they feel like. New hypotheses are formed by recognizing patterns in observable data and they are constantly being scrutinized. Atheists don't think humanity has all the answers, but things like relativity can predict observations in every single recorded case.

  • @mightyshockwave You know, it's a shame most atheists aren't like you. Almost all of them just give us a bad name.

  • @mightyshockwave What's even wronger is to believe that Christians believe in a Goku. Really, silly atheist wannabe.

  • @c1k4ml3kc3

I guess you're right. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have responded like that. As long as you don't use your religion to harm others, then you're free to believe in what makes you feel good. Even though I don't believe in your Christ, I think a perfect world would be where everyone was like him.

  • @mightyshockwave Religion is a group of people with the same theological belief. It can't be used to harm anyone since it's out of the physical plane of existence. However people can hurt other people, therefore it's not religion that can "hurt someone" but it's, instead, people. Can Atheism or even Micromanagement hurt someone?! C'mon. Thinking about reality here. Also, it's not "my Christ" since I don't "own' someone nor I feel as a part of a group or something, nor I believe in Christ. So,yea

  • Comment removed

  • It should probably be noted that this song is actually the Lord's Prayer sung in Swahili :P

  • Just a short little search on wikipedia and I'm shocked.

Guys, this is "The Lord's Prayer" in Swahili..

So it doesn't really work as a global anthem.. That'd be theocracy, but the way the Swahili translation is worded is an EXTREMELY clever move by Sid... The game uses religion, peace, war, food, and culture.. All of which are present in this prayer.

Even as an atheist, I still can't doubt that some hymns are really catchy.

  • Why does this song make me happy?

Why does it give me hope for humanity?

  • Why aint this on spotify?!

  • this song is so great especially since i lived in africa

  • This song is wonderfull, awesome game. Love it, but, i think Civ 3 is the best Civ game made so far.

  • Arr!

  • The problem with this song is that I don't want to leave the menu, I just sit there with the song looping on the menu screen. Civ V's theme may be less memorable, but at least I get past the menu.

I do miss Civ IV though, my copy of it is all the way in another state.

I remember my first time playing civ, I didn't think much of it when I bought it, but only a minute into my first game, I knew it had to be the best game ever.

  • proof that Civ IV is far better than Civ V. i mean, it goes much farther than the superior music. to me, Civ IV just has that magic quality. it's the little things, like Leonard Nimoy's narration of technology, and the world creation. it was these little things, together, that made Civ IV a truly magnificant game.

  • I want to build a spaceship now. How strange.
