I don't think that you have to start with the drums. A lot of people think that every drum hits every melody, but it won't.
I think it's better to put a drum in your mix only to look how the melody works on it and when the melody is composed you can fix the drumsounds, so that they fix exactly to the melody.
But I also think that I am the only person who starts producing with some melody lines and not with the drums or the bassline
Believe in me Above & Beyond and other sick pros don't even touch these end-user software. Protools and Cubase dominating the pro market. I know Mike Shiver using Cubase. The point is "where to arrange" (cubase, protools), and "where to generate the sounds, beats". Pros using hardware to generate sounds + quality software plugins like those of reFX, NI etc. but mostly hardware like Access Virus for trance.
this video is hopelessly lacking in important details. You MUST understand compression ratios before you can apply compression properly. You must know the math to apply EQ to several channels individually. There is x amount of bandwidth and headroom you must know how to divide each instrument into that bandwidth. eg: how to scoop low mids out of the bass so they do not clash with the bass drum.
I would say that while all of what you said is somewhat important, having a keen ear is what is most important when mixing. Compressor ratios are important and EQ bandwith, but anything will need to be tweaked, so it is worthwhile to figure out what sounds good and how to make instruments sound good together.
maybe u should do a tutorial because that was very important info that can't be left out exspecially if your product will be considered for mainstream!
This is basically a teaser for a Berklee Music course, Producing Music with Reason. I'm taking the 12 week course right now. It isn't meant to be a full blown tutorial, it's just a taste of what you can get taking this class.
@sonicdissent I think your over complicating it. As long as you understand that all sounds will need a place in the sonic spectrum and that you can use the stereo width to create space between sounds that share the same frequencies (panning). The rest is all in the ear.
@sonicdissent You don't happen to have a tutorial or any tips for mixing, do you? I'm trying to learn how to prevent that clash and preserve headroom.
Would not say Ableton is "better" per say, but more comprehesive and definately more open ended. Reason and Ableton Rewired together however...slam dunk there! They are different applications, sharing some stuff. Ableton is a DAW, looping, production and powerhouse. I run Reason, Ableton rewired into Protools, control parameters with automation across all three....have everything i need for live recording, production, and sequncing covered! My point is, if you can swing it, get both!
Both is true. But when you use it to "pump" the sound, you can yse compressor in 2 ways - classic or side-chain. Whe you use classic (with proper setting) you are not only increasing volume, but also reducing "volume peaks". But actually you are hearing it as increasing the mass of the sound. When you use side-chain, you use another channel to tell the compressor when to compress the sound, so you can get more sound in less space - typical situation: fcking 4x4 dance beats + bass...
I kno this is old, but is it ok to let some of the audio tracks from the mixer jump into the red of the master channel as long as it's not peaking or sitting in it?
Re Reasons is the best, I wonder how do you come to that conclusion have you tried all of the rest? Don't get me wrong Reason is an excellent program, to Rewire with other DAW and for production aspects as well, but to say its the best, you have to be more specific. Reason has never crashed on me, easy learning curve nice instruments and effects, lacks VST, AU, RSTA capabilities and no audio or vocal recording, unless rewired, Apple Logic Pro is the best for me, its all about choice music 4 life
The only software that's better for producing music than Reason is Re-birth hahaha... (joking) I love the fact that Re-birth is free and incorporated into reason! :D
Still good info
thx

@MrBassgeige I do the same thing. I make the melody then the drums and bassline....
To me the drum works off the melody

You know, I like doing this stuff live instead of sitting on my ass moving a few things getting carpel tunnel.

Instead you're sitting on your ass getting carpel tunnel on YouTube.

Ableton is much better.. You can use VSTs. Reason.. not su much. Your limited to what reason gives you and thats it.

One question. Does all the rythm compression is absolutely necessary or is just a technique to boost the overall volumen of the track?

Do you compress each sound or do you compress kick / bass together?

this is exactly the standard technique. it is not reason, it is not live, it is not protools. it is audio.
