This song is the fucking soul of the 80s. Ooozes that deep, wide, bright, liquid, dreamy, metallic, primary colour thing... Who sings "I'm in love" these days and actually sounds like they're in love?
@MegaMagicbeans That's such a close-minded view. There are thousands of young artists doing music all over the world, many of them doing great stuff. Generalizing today's music as "shit" is just wrong.
I love this song and tried to find it for years, and lucked out, as The Passions had re-released this album.. "10,000 feet /miles? over China" - ? - not that long ago.
at the age of forty eight this takes me back to a time when anything went and well it probably did! still have my espidrills and the long fringe although hair is silver grey instead of bleached blonde
More recently the band (or was it the singer) said the track was inspired by Steve "Roadent" Connolly, a former Clash roadie. There is a video clip of him being interviewed on here but Youtube won't let me post the link :( Look up Roadent:Clash roadie:1977 talking sense for the clip of him.
Great song," trying not to pose..for the cameras and the girls".... I remember a radio interview with the group at the time and the song is inspired by actor Helmut Berger, I think he is Austrian but never mind, he made some great films with Visconti, notably "The Damned" where he impersonates Marlene Dietrich in full drag! There is a nice tribute to Berger here on youtube featuring clips from the "Dorian Gray"film from 1970.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this song!!!!!!!!!! Reminds me of dressing up as a Punk Rocker with winkle picker shoes, leather trousers, loads of eyeliner, leopard skin tops and spiky hair and told I looked like a boy at school.. :-)
It's that Echoplex guitar as well as the gorgeous vocal that makes this... what the Cure might have been with a female frontperson [stands by for flaming by rabid Cure fans] :)
It was one of those songs where you felt it should of been massive all around the world , but you were glad it wasn't because that would have made the song uncool.
@DroidLife i think you might be taking this a bit too far but as im only a battle droid what do i know LOL';-) and i think other life forms might get the wrong impression with our communications lol';-)
@DroidLife LOL into history ';-) oh sh** that means i need a time machine now im sad ';-( i was 22 when this was out there ';-]now i will have to reboot and erase what iv just been doing so i will not remember this';-[
@tacticalbattledroid You're saying you were 22 in 1981? I thougt you were younger, but ive heard from people on YT that they thought I was younger. Im 39, and grew up as a kid when all this was going on. :)
@tacticalbattledroid I was kind of wondering where the WW II themed "urban exploration" interest came from in a younger electro enthusiast. It's good that us old geezers are out here representing. Good taste has no age limit! :D
@DroidLife i spent a lot of time fishing shooting and learning / teaching myself survival techniques at Shornemead Fort when i was in my teens so its from then and the electro is from my years when i was DJing at parties and in pubs etc in the 80s ';-)
@tacticalbattledroid When the shit hits the fan, send me a message and I'll hop on the last boat over to Brittain and join your survivalist ranks! I dont know how to fish, but i know how to shoot Reptilian, fallout irradiated NWO fascist zombies with a fire arm, i think...
I was an undergraduate at Manchester University when this came out... and it was wayyyyy too cool to like this over chart pop. Yet 30 years on it lives, due to its pure quality. Happy days.
saw this clip when it was first played. Absolutely blew me away, the simplicity of the chords and beat and the delay. Simply superb!! One of my all time favourites and i probably have listened to it at least once a week for about 20 odd years. Im sad I know.... Thx for posting
Brings back many memories of long waits at Cardiff central station for the next train. It was the only good record on the jukebox in the cafe in1981, can't belive it's nearly 30 years ago !
One of the first songs I bought aged 11 brings back great memories...and I still love and play it now, thanks for posting the video as couldn't remember ever seeing them on the tv singing this.
Funny you should mention that - they went on tour with The Cure around about the time they released The Forest. I was lucky enough to see this double bill at Hull Uni. Shame only one of them went on to be massive....
Written by singer Barbara Gogan about a Sex Pistols roadie who appeared in German movies. This beautiful song should have been Top Ten but Polydor didn't put out enough copies and it peaked at No.25 in the UK, the group's only hit. Gogan's now in a band called The Monarchs.
its the guitar sound that gets me. i have not heard it for 20 years or so and thought it was all synths - it sound very cocteaus - massive distortion, echo and delay (or whatever it is called)
