The movie that this song comes from was inspired by Bowie during his Ziggy Stardust days and the height of Glam Rock.

Some elements from Lou Reed are incorportated into McGregors character, but no real Velvet Underground connections. "Velvet Goldmine" is actually a great song by Bowie, a left-out from Ziggy Stardust album. Correct me if I'm wrong.

this movie is loosely based around Bowie, notice the dress worn during Sebastian, is very bowie influenced he wore one almost exactly like it, and the outfit with the one arm during Baby's on Fire, that was taken from Bowie's Ziggy stage. and Tommy was based around 80's Bowie I believe
