Wow. I had the alto sax solo in the beginning of this song when our band played it for our 8th grade spring concert back in 1999!!! I still love this song!
This is such a powerful song! For me it states closer to the past and new beginnings to the future. I just love it. It gives me goose bumps every time I hear it. Thank you for posting!
Ahh, my eigth grade band is playing this for A competition we have in Jackson, New Jersey. But then we go to Sixflags to celebrate.. So its all good ;)
wow...i havent heard this song in a long time...i had played this song back in the 8th grade and to my suprise we played it freakin' badass...ours was slightly different but mostly in the ending which for me was tiring.
Ah yeah, we played this last year in our high school band. It was fun. Also, this year we were warming up on a piece called "Majestia", which is also by James Swearingen, and it sounded suspiciously similar to Novena. Coincidence?
You're first trombonist has amazing dynamic control...I play tenor sax for my band, and I know how easy it is to start drowning everyone out in the solos...Kudos to you
Damn. Compared to my schools band, this band plays the the slow parts EXTREMELY slow and the fast parts way faster. The timpani needed to be louder in my opinion. I'm the timpanist in my school band, and I bang the hell out of them.
you need a piccalo ( i know i spelled it wrong) it really helps. I play flute in my band and we're playing this now one of my favriote songs I ever played.
Brings back lots of memories from high school in the mid-90s! I played Trumpet 2 for this piece. Last time I heard this song was when we played it at the Class of 1995 graduation.. Wow. It's been that long ago.
not bad at all u guys did good i think that the saxophone & clarinet solo was very well done but excuse me if im wrong but did u guys go too fast at the allegro section? cuz we're playin this in our band and we dont go THAT fast but overall good
When I was in middle school band, the only trombonist we had actually dropped his slide off the stage while playing "Jingle Bell Rock", the stage being about 6 feet above the floor.
I'm currently playing this in grade 9! Great song! E.S.A REPRESENT!

I might ask the director if my friend who plays tenor sax can play the transposed version of the solo.
Firestar779 3 years ago
My band has only three french horns and no trombones, so you can't even hear the horn/trombone solo in our band.
Firestar779 3 years ago
I played this in 6th grade, the trumpet is hard.

Why do Asians like to play this song? This is like Coca-Cola for school bands in Japan.

Why no Bass Clarinet or Bari-sax? I play the Bass clarinet for this song and it really adds to the opening.

Amazing job guys. The onlything I can say though, is a bit more woodwind in places, and be really careful on that ending
FaytLeingod07 4 years ago
i know this is off-topic and kinda sad, but it would be funny if the trombonist hit the guy in front of him in the head with his slide
