  • Hope we see a return to good sax! Modern music is sadly lacking the sax...

  • Top song - wot happened to the artists who wrote great lyrics like this!

  • Why doesn't some music company out there get all these great ol 80's classics together with their video clips and release them as a boxed set - I'll order 1 now :)

  • Australian será etérno.....

  • For some reason Im really liking this song right now

  • Reminds me of being a kid in the back of my mum's blue valiant on a summers day driving to the pools.

  • September 1980: Maribyrnong High School had this cool field trip to Woodend Racecourse the whole school went..they had a juke box for the day and Aussie Crawl were on it with this gem..remember sitting on a hill looking down on the course hearing this belting out..as motorcycledude said b4..those days were absolute carefree..nzoz you do such an excellent job..its more than just the clip & tunes..

  • ok all you au...crawl fans how about this back in the early 2000s on a lazy sunday at the gladesville hotel james r.. played there twice within a month playing a...crawl@j... solo cheap beer and a free concert of a legend!!!!

  • memories.......

  • HAHA check out 1:49 when the drummer scratches his nose yet the snare still sounds haha

  • lol at the old guy in the hawaiian shirt getting right into the music and dancing to a classic 80s song!!!!!

  • great song

  • Keep pressing the "2" key.

  • 0:08-0:22 ...... Those "jaded" eyes say it all. He's been there, he's done that. He's been fucked over a million times by cheating girlfriends, he's had a gutful and now he's drowning his sorrows with grog. Sounds just like me.... I too have had a gutfull. Anyone wanna join me at a pub in Kings Cross so we can both drown our sorrows? Message me and I'll meet you there next year (if I still feel jaded) by then....

  • @Stealthkeys77 hahahhaha jaded eyes alright, stoned azzzzz hahaha lovin this song love the aussie old school music love from nz

  • Love the fat old guy trying to dance with the young asian girl.

  • who spotted Red Symons at 28sec? Classic song.

  • Freakin lovin this - takes me back xx

  • Classic and amazing Aussie group ! Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi!

  • Proud to be asian aussie and love Australian Crawl!

  • Saw Aussie Crawl many times in the early 80's, my fave concert being down at the famous Victorian Beach town of Torquay near Wnkipop/Bells Beach... bloody brilliant band !

  • haha see the drummer scratch his nose and the drums are still makin the sound lol

  • "1:05" good

  • love this song.

  • Heard this song for the first time an hour ago in (of all things) background for an airplane crash video! Have been listening continually since. It's a shame this band was not able to gain the exposure in larger markets, instead of many of the many mediocre US bands of the era.

  • How is their 2 dislikes????????? that is more unbelievable than Pakistan not knowing Osama was hiding there.....

  • @bottrellmcneill Probably Simon and James bagging each others' performance. I don't think they get along these days...

  • Aaaaaargh those carefree days of beaches, babes and worrying about where the next booze up will be....Now its Bills,Baldness, and worrying about where the next dollar will be...Great memories.

  • @motorcycledude1000 nah, I think Bill's baldness was more of a concern back then

  • @nzoz1980 Hahaha, keep up the great work nzoz.

  • @motorcycledude1000 Amen, Brother!!

  • @motorcycledude1000 yup u nailed it.

  • one of the best songs of the eighties

  • Such an amazing sound that leaves you wanting more.

  • Tempos bons!!!!!

  • Whenever I hear the Crawl, I feel like I've come back Home - and I live in Australia ! Go figure......

  • what a unique sound. Thanks for posting so many videos nzoz1980! The ruffly pink shirt is all aces in this video :D

  • australian music rocks,

  • Theres something about this tune that is so nostalgic for me. I grew up in Melbourne, more specific Carrum/Aspendale area in the early 80's. The video really captures the sentiment of the song. I love the way the whole band blends into the feel of the song, the way at 1.14 James is just chillin with his Bourbon and coke, and the end of the video is classic!

  • @mudguts73 Im with you on all that you say Mudguts73....although a total reminder for me of growing up in Sydney's western suburbs (Parramatta area). This was a very popular song played in the local nightclubs and usually one of the "find a girl for the slow dance number" type songs. (with the view to other further activities....). Total aussie classic..!!

  • how can this be possibly 31 years old.... something catastrophic has happened to the space-time continuum........... no way 31yrs!!!

  • Great song...James Reyne looks totally stoned at the start

  • @Espie1979 dual lazy eye syndrome i think....otherwise he was permanently stoned...which is still a possiblity

  • story of my life.Wicked song

  • great great song :D but at the start it looks like his stoned lmfao :D

  • Esse som é muito louco, cheia a praia assim como a maioria das Oz bands dos anos 80! pure vibe!!!

  • Awesome!! I enjoyed this very much. All the best and thumbs up. G.

  • Nice pink shirt.

  • Great song and clip. I love 80s music and times were different. I like how they wear suits and don't take things so seriously and humour of the time in the film clips. Pointless comparing Australian groups of now with the 80s for the simple fact that there were alot more talented Australian bands in the 80s than there is now.

  • I search for good music no matter where it comes from. There is always gonna be crap music and there is of course wonderful music!

Powderfinger still are one of my favourite bands with more than just a 'few good songs' they have heaps of inspiring material! You just have to look for it.

Oh and, I really enjoy Australian Crawl too! Love from Aus!

  • its funny how this era produced a jazz-like arrangment set up where you have each instrument with its own defined territory, allowing each instrument to be heard.

  • An Aussie classic

  • I love this song so much. My wife and I used to live in a house opposite Kaitaia High School in Northland New Zealand. We used to hear the school band practise playing this song night after night and it has stuck in my head ever since. It reminds me of those happy times. Recently my wife was killed in an accident and I thought of this song and just had to look it up on You Tube.

  • what a great film clip. They dont make em like this anymore

  • I love James Reyne

  • powderfinger, hmmm only like one of their songs, where as aussie crawl cold chisel etc pretty much every song of theirs is great

  • @teeej000 Powderfinger were the 'third wave' (at least I think that's what they refer them to) of Oz Rock! You Am I, Powderfinger, Spiderbait, Silverchair, Regurgitator, Grin Spoon, The Whitlams and their little brothers The Vines, Jet, Wolfmother, Airborn, followed... they were good, they played well, they wrote a few nice songs, but they are and will always be a little, well.. 'meh'!

As for those you mention, they are nicely placed in a category that is easy to define: The past.

  • I now see these bands as nicely placed candles, offering a distinctive talent in their time, which appeased the Australian public at the time (good songs and a sense of national identity works; ie 'Australian' Craw, Midnight Oil) and gave many a sense of pride in their homegrown talent.

Comparing Aus.Crawl to Powderfinger, is like comparing a 20 year old man in 1978 to a 20 year old boy in 2010. Okay, that was a rough comparison, but its obvious that circumstances are different...

  • @nzoz1980 Well said mate, couldn't put it any better myself ay,

  • @surrealismisabitch thank you... i might also add that bands like Aus.Crawl, Cold Chisel, Midnight Oil and many others, not only aspired for good music, but also a good sense of presentation and identity. It may be a case of taking notes from bands like Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Doors, etc. Have a simple yet effective name - shape the band into a look that suits the name and play a style most suitable for that 'package'.

  • I think that concept that I described died a little in the 90's: when bands looked more like four or five people at a jolly-up, and less like four or five people dressed as a 'band'.

  • @nzoz1980 - No, close - the Third Wave group are a LOT meh!!! The older bands knew how it was done - The third wave as such is pretty lame by comparison...

  • @mozzy2410 I agree....its hard defending third wave bands... I saw Eskimo Joe live about a year ago (one out of many third wave bands I have seen live) and they bored me....

  • @teeej000 Cmon mate; I am a huge OzCrawl and Chisel fan but Powderfinger\Bernard legendary too

  • @teeej000 me too, i consider powderfinger more pop rock

  • classic. love the clip too.

  • I know or knew half the NZ and Oz music community, of which I was a small and proud part in the 70's and 80's. It's pretty obvious the early eighties saw us strong because of the public's willingness to identify a sound that belonged to us, and not to the international media machine. Regionalism may not be ideal, but look at the pukefest we've got now thanks to globalization. Fact is int'l publishers make more dough with 'hi' (ha) quality material already in the can than from a local effort :(

  • sometimes we don't take notice until the bands are gone , "powderfinger" are a great aussie act , the music was never gone we just live in the past & forget about what is going around now . the kids care your just old and to stubborn to listen

  • don't follow pathetic current music charts; delve into the vaults of music and you will find gold for an eternity of listening bliss!

  • James Reyne should be nominated for best Aussie singer up there with Bon Scott !!

  • If I had to live outside of Oz, hearing these Aussie sounds again would bring a tear to one's eye..........

  • @Aqene1000 - I DO live outside OZ (in CA) and grew up with these songs on the radio - Chisel and Crawl and Icehouse and Split Enz - and lemme tell ya, it DOES bring a tear to the eye....

  • James needs to do a gig at Engadine Bowling Club!!!

  • Wow! What a great song! Excellent sound quality here too! Thanks for uploading!!

  • Man this is a cool song ...

  • The Crawl were pure genius for their time and if you cant see it you suck lol

  • Love this oldie!!!

  • James is the hotter form of man.....a woman can handle and hear, got to love your work...happy charm..printed 2010 xx

  • mean voice, mean guitar.

  • i love OZ music...specially hoodoo gurus and australian crawl

  • The Australian music scene is like all other music scenes... The REAL musicians NEVER get the right or real recognition, apart from Chisel, AC/DC, BeeGees and Australian Crawl - there are hundreds of awesome live australian bands who actually work for their fans, they tour, they dont sing through auto tune on stage, unlike the majority of all american acts - you only have to go to any pub of a weekend and you see the real australian musicians.

  • Who does the slower cover version? anyone know?

  • @jonzzey john farnahm

  • love it....

  • you all need to shut up.... Australian music has always been great, just like music from everywhere in the world bad stuff is also made... as for inferiority.... Australia is too busy enjoying the good life to care what anyone thinks about it.

  • @Ryanoceris1

actually, there are many aussies who do care what others think... they're the ones who are not busy enjoy the good life and have too much time to care... but they are out there.

  • @Ryanoceris1 I'm an Englishman in Australia, I think this tune rules.

  • @Ryanoceris1 Damn straight!

  • @Ryanoceris1 im australian and i dont give a fuck what people thnk about our music, but i dont even like it myself hahah, bloc party... mmmmmmmmm

  • @Ryanoceris1

"Australia is too busy enjoying the good life to care what anyone thinks about it."

That doesn't sound like the Australia that I know and love. Australia is an open and understanding country. Not one that is smug and secure in it's wealth. Surely we believe not just in our wealth, but also the common-wealth?

  • @Ryanoceris1 You tell em mate! Screw everyone who hates Oz. Wankers!!

  • This song is noiceeeeeeeeeee

  • It's not a cultural cringe Please. the seekers started the aussie thrust OS when Planes became safe ( well safer ). The of aussie success has never ended since. not huge numbers of successful bands but aussies did well remembering that you have to kiss a lot of A**E in a big market like the US and live there for yonks to actually get known. NZOZ. this is the place to start the list of aussie greats that have made it OS. First up ?? bee gees, acdc, inxs ...please no rubbish about born in the UK!

  • another fantastic one. this is when people could write, sing and play. now we get plastic beat box shit. 10 yo with electronic voices. dont throw out your old music.

  • someone wanna add the words?? so we can sing / mumble along. awesome song!

  • Simon Binks OOOOzes style.

    tasteful>

    Such an underated guitarist!

Always admired his licks. Inspired me to pick up the guitar in the 80"s as a kid and have been playing ever since. Thankyou simon!!!

  • @fragglepuppies I love what you've stated here. And, I think Simon would appreciate it too. For some reason Simon doesn't like this clip and doesn't watch it. Therefore, I've allowed Simon to know about your comment. Cheers!

  • This song is a classic full stop.

  • AUSSIE NATIONAL ANTHEM!

  • mabuhay! :)

  • dont know about the dancing :)

  • must have heard this on the radio a million times when i was young. takes me back

  • @2309brenda me too, and I never really knew what the song was about then. love it now though.

  • heroin

  • @gxd4b1.you're spot on.i even noticed it when he was at the bar in the clip.he looked like he had a pipe or two in him.

  • Thanks for the video.

  • He looks like he's on drugs LOL!!!

check out his eyes. He looks f...d

  • hahaha youre blocked bye ...wish i had more hands, give that 3 thumbs up

  • Comment removed

  • You're blocked. bye.

  • I hope that your comment was heavily laden with sarcasm. Maybe you should have a look at the lyrics and the video clip. "I left my heart back in the orient

    down on bali bays"

Its clearly set in a bar in asia.

  • @JEXVI Thanks!! never new what the lyrics were!! Cheers!!!

  • he looks like he has down syndrome

  • their lead guitarist always nailed every solo

  • Awesome song guys!

  • great great song!

    thanks for post!

  • James looks absoutely f**ed in this vid lol. Im sure its meant to convey him being in a bar, drinking his sorrows away .... but he just comes across as being a bit high on drugs lol.

But don't all thumb me down, I still love the guy!

  • yeah, he was stoned. What fun.

  • Isnt that David singing in this video clip?

  • @pabloalarroyo- if theres still music like this being produced, by all means post names and artists, cause all i hear out of the current generations music is un-comparable to this era.

  • Reyne looksl like a drun dolph lungren

  • This song kills, and Reyne is a legend.

  • I just listened to Australias current number one single, 'Tik Tok' by Kesha for the first time.

What the fuck is the Australian music scene coming to when a shithouse song like that is number one? Why is it that nearly all the good music came to a stop when we entered the 21st century?

  • In 1980, Australia was only just starting to feel comfortable its own ability to make music that is just as good as any other location and keep its own stamp on the product.

During the 1980's Australia began to feel slightly inferior due to the lack of international attention.

During the 1990's Australia figured that its best not to be itself and just do what everybody else is doing, because it'll save time and money and will limit the risk factors....

    And the kids don't care...

  • Perhaps its the kids that are the root of the problem. Songs that are commercially popular these days are liked most by the younger generation and rarely by the older generations. But not all of generation Y has shit taste in music....I was born mid 80's and think 'Downhearted' is a dead set corker

  • Hey somo84,

don't recall ever hearing the phrase "dead set corker" when in aussie during the early 80s. Whateve the h it means, it sounds cool. I agree with u, downhearted is a great song.

  • @nzoz1980

Bull. It's not about Australian inferiority, or lack of international attention, or limiting risk factors. It's about making money and that's it. This music doesn't exist any more because it will not sell. Ke$ha will sell and that's the only reason. Aussie pop fans buy this music because that's what they have been conditioned to buy. Trust me, if Australia was to be itself again we wouldn't be buying Aussie Crawl. It's a capitalist victory that spans the Western world and crappy pop.

  • @noexittoexist okay, i trust you

  • @nzoz1980 Ha ha! Thanks. At least somebody trusts me.

  • @noexittoexist go freeze as shit and fuck yourself with it,dog cunt .

  • @scottp8976

What? OK. I will "go freeze as shit". Are you happy now?

Come back when you can talk nicely, eh?

  • @noexittoexist I don't know what C*#P you listen too mate, but Aussie music is great to listen to, you can relate to the content and appreciate great vocals and musicians. Plus you can actually understand what they are saying not like you american S*#t at the moment.

  • @noexittoexist Twelve months from now, nobody will even remember that Kesha crap. But people will still be playing this twelve -years- from now :)

  • @sagewah

    I sincerely hope so.

  • @noexittoexist What a load of BULL. I personally have seen plenty of comments on these clips of NZOZ's from teenagers, claiming it was the best music era. At least these bands played their own instruments, and not singing along to computerized crap.

When the Australian Crawl CD's come back on the shelves, look out for them. Because, there's plenty of people waiting for them.

  • @MsDragon1968

I really would like to see that. I love Aussie Crawl. However, I think you are living in fantasy land if you believe that.

  • @noexittoexist I don't get this. If you don't like the artist/song why go searching for it in the first place?

Allow the Australian Crawl fans to continue to appreciate their music, and you bugger off and continue to appreciate your computerized rubbish.

  • @MsDragon1968

I absolutely LOVE this song. I think that I may have been a little ambiguous in my first comment. I was trying to say that because of the capitalist domination that basically all we have now is manufactured pop. I really do like Australian Crawl. It was great REAL music that I think we will struggle to see on the charts again.

  • @noexittoexist

The reason why they wont "sell" this music anymore

is because it doesnt involve "oonce oonce", pictures of

chubby women in bikinis with a focus on the ASS and it doesnt

appeal to black and hispanic audiences which hip hop, rap and

RNB are geared towards to. And as far as "Aussie Youth" ??

The only people who would listen to this as youth of Australia

today would be the very small minority located in country towns

    influenced by their older peers.

  • @noexittoexist

What im saying is a bit off subject but...

Let me just say I agree with everything you said. But Capatalism is a good thing when conducted in a fair legal fashion. It inspires Hard Work, Technological, Socialogical & Medical advancement. And is the only way at the moment anyway, were ever going to get off this 'god' forsaken rock .

  • @DanameaTheBattleLock

Finally. At least somebody saw what I was trying to say. By the way, when we leave Earth, where are we going to go? And what good will it do us?

  • @noexittoexist

The Sheer wealth of Minerals in Space is more then enough reason to populate other planets.

Mars is one planet we currently have a great interest in, and i have heard some reputable names claim that the first person to walk on Mars has already been born (aka The first manned mission to mars may be happening inside the next 20-30 years)

  • @DanameaTheBattleLock

Ha, ha! You know, I like your thinking my friend... But I think you might be a bit crazy. Especially after that, "the first person to walk on Mars has already been born" stuff. What reputable names have you heard claim that the first person to walk on Mars has already been born?

  • @nzoz1980 We haveACDC who took the highway to hell and broke ground through the U.S and the world. They haven't changed and are still packing out stadiums now.

  • Remindes me 10 years ago back in Brasil. i was driving in this shitty road and praying to my car dont breakdown in the middle of nowhere. Cold night and warm song. Thanks Australia !!!

Cheers from NY Metro Area !!!

  • I don't think good music came to a stop, simply radio stations prommote different stuff these days, lots of good australian artist around if you look beyond the charts

  • Comment removed

  • @somo84 thats not true at all Australia still creats good music in the new millenium.take a good look at shannon nole keith urban .though im not asking you to compare them to the 80's music .keith urban is massive in america even though we dont here much of his stuff here at the moment!

  • @dymitie shannon nole is a tool. all that is from idol is the enermy of real musical artist everywhere. why should these clueless 16 year old wannabees be given a leg up when real bands spend sometimes more than 10 years unloading, setting up, performing, packing up their gear several times a week ? the industry is full of thickle idiots in suits and so-called experts. if they actually knew what was good music, why are so many youth turning away to listen to the sounds of yesteryear?

  • Don't be daft - there is plenty of good music being made now, just as there was plenty of crap being made in the 80's - you only remember the good stuff right - just don't expect to find it number one on the singles charts - who buys singles now anyway - look a little harder there is plenty of good stuff to be found - just don't expect to see it on 'Video Hits'

  • @somo84 SOMO this is a great comment. if you go to other countries (not US&A), they actively include local bands as part of their charts... cos they actively promote local talent. I watched X-FUCTOR last night (well, my wife MADE me watch it) and that KE$HA was performing her new shit... and that's just about what it was...! bring on ALTIYAN CHILDS, I reckon. he's got a voice (but long live THE CRAWL anyway.. love them from way back) love alan

  • @somo84 that process started to surface in the late 80s. even the grunge thing was nothing more than the industry finally wrestling away the punk from the street and feeding it to an unaware legion of 14 year olds who for the most part hadn't heard that sort of music. and it all went down hill from there. everything is marketed toward that wanky metro big brother generation. they care more about fashion and being seen at pool partys brought to you by nokia. fake music for fake people

  • This brings back so many memories... I was in year 8, first year of highschool, and this was such a wonderful time of my life. Isn't it amazing how a song can instantly take you back to any time of your life with such amazing ease? Thanks for this great song.

  • Love this song so much. My wife and I once lived in a house in Kaitaia, NZ across the road from the local high school hall. In that hall a band, dont know who they were, used to practise this song all the time. They did a really good job and it just grew and grew on me. It reminds me of those happy times.

  • The song is called "Downhearted" one word.

  • True Aussie Legend!!!!!

  • love it

  • FUCK I love this. Aussie Crawl are the epitome of GREAT Australian music.

And JAMES REYNE, his solo work is just as good.

    10/10

  • Great Aussie band. I like James` frilly shirt!

    Thanks for sharing.

  • Those suits rock. Where can I get one?

  • :( I love this tune....

  • Great Song!

  • wicked guitar solo and ohh that sax is so sweet

  • This is truly amazing. I've always loved Australian Crawl but I've never seen their vids before tonight. That they showed such explicit social comment in 1980 was amazing. I worked in head office of multicultural education (NSW, Australia) from 1982 to 1987. I didn't ever see anything like this.

  • absolute classic.

  • we always bemused the yuppies. This was the Aussie Band.

  • RIP Guy McDonough and Brad Robinson (guitarists)

  • sad we are goin one by one. guy too. I never knew.

  • i so agree with barsopen 1970 music these days are dumand tryhardy old school music is so much better

  • best chinese band ever

  • ahaha what
