This song evokes the image of world peace after all the evil leaders have fallen and a new civilization has risen up, walking through the desert, and into the horizon of a new beginning.
This is such a well crafted song, its so well put together and deceptively complicated to play along to.... This is such an under rated album. Its a group of very clever musicians at the peak of their powers! Hate when its labelled 'alternative'. Its pure music man, needs no label!
I love to play along to this song on bass. Such an awesome tune. Soundgarden is and has been my favorite band since I was a toddler and my dad had Badmotorfinger. This is one of my favorites by them! Cant wait for the new album!
I love how Soundgarden evolved between each album release. Ultramegaok and Badmotorfinger were hardcore, almost metal, then Superunknown was more experimental, real dark, a bit psychedellic, and somewhat depressing, but then Down on the Upside came out and it was even more experimental and so much more positive and self assuring. Soundgarden's songs are so unique from each other that no matter what style they chose they always came through and made a masterpiece. Soundgarden's music is a gift!
Soundgarden is playing right now in Long Beach... Of course, I'm missing it. But it brought to mind this song that seems to encapsulate wicked flashbacks from my life overseas.
Thank the gods or goddess for the chance encounter or randomness that came about with regard to every aspect of this music , production and writing - also for the pureness and cleanness of mind that must have existed to write it - now the world and universe can hear it forever as it will always exist - like any other pure thought of creativity -
but also fuck my x64 codecs that keep garbling it ?
singling out ben when he is part of the friggin band for credit is a little steep. thats like i hate STP but i love Dan DeLeo. the man wrote all the music but you go out of your way to discredit the band that composes the work. you think Ben's got pipes like cornell? didnt think so.
@whityfrd Well, Ben Shepard did write a fair amount of compositions on their last three albums, this one in particular is full of them, and all the credit generally goes to Cornell.
@whityfrd Well, if you consider the fact that chris also craves attention half of the time and drowns out kim's solos/riffs and plays over him, then his comment wasn't steep by any means. Ben, Kim, Matt, and Chris are all excellent musicians, excellent composers for that matter. I've been to a few of their concerts over the years, most recently saw them at the Bill Graham civic center in SF, it was fucking amazing like always, didn't expect anything less. So, I'll love Soundgarden until I die.
Fantastic song. Only a band of talent and maturity can get away with writing a song that's unorthodox and yet so intimately peaking. My hair stands on end whenever I hear this. It's like four minutes of paradise on earth.
Mailman, Let it drown me, tighter and tighter, fresh tendrils, Zero chance, like suicide, Fell on black days, pretty noose, 4th of july, blow up the outside world, Holy water, outshined, and black hole sun. Those are my favorites off the top. Oh yeah, Dusty and Slaves and bulldozers are sweet, too. So many good songs. Them and AIC are my favorite bands.
over the years I've come to prefer the Ben Sheppard material on this album over the other songs. tracks 13-15 are the best 3 tracks on the album IMHO.
Also: does anyone else besides me think that Dave Matthews Band could make a fantastic cover of this song? It almost seems like DMB made it and Soundgarden is covering!
kim is the one that held soundgarden out of the spotlight of the grunge era.... soundgarden is one of the best bands in the history of music itself but they have been looked over....pearl jam and alice in chains are damn good 2 but nirvana gained thier fame through kurt cobains death and dont desereve the apprciation of the others! chris cornell saved music for me let his musical brillance live forever!!!!!
@DrChickAmbrose: I agree that Soundgarden is a great great band. One of my all time faves.
But you are rewriting history about Nirvana. When "Smells Like Teen Spirit" hit, everything changed. KC's death actually stopped the momentum, after the initial uproar. Maybe musically they weren't on a par w/ PJam or Alice, but they are the ones that made the genre popular in the first place.
Switch Opens is definitely one of their songs shows another side to Soundgarden that helps to differentiate them from the other imitation bands of the era.
@babayaga77 got to add for me any way,,room a thousand miles wide.blow up the outside world, zero chance.jesus christ pose. bulldozer. but its hard because every thing they tounced was gold to me. their name fits them well. only backwards. a garden of sound..a true sound garden. never be a better grundge band/.aic was great./p.j are killer.silver chair had a few great albums. for new music try the band called[ the music ] they are so addictive.im inviting u ill send u good songs by them.peace
i so love this song the opening is what i love can you believe that actually think ABOUT THE OPENING OF THIS SONG THRU OUT MY WORK DAY?!!thank you Chris................
I really like this song because it sounds like Soundgarden, but it also sounds like they are going in a new direction. Its sad that Shepherd didnt compose material Between this, and "Head Down" he was one hell of a musician.
I feel ya man. The band was really headed in a great direction with this album. They came out of the whole "Seattle" scene, with an incredible piece of music. Thats why it caught me so off guard when they called it quits. And for someone who was there from "louder than love" to "upside" I really dont know how to feel about the reunion yet. I just hope its not for the money. I hope they come out with some new material with some balls. I kinda just want to keep em in my time capsule. Soundtable!!!
Amen to that man... I have the same fear about their new direction if they really end up making a whole new album, you know cause the Chris/Timbagay thing. I wouldn't be worried about Kim and Shepard, they're badass, and Cameron... he's Pearl Jam and always been doin' great...
one of my top 5 faves off this album.... comments though, this is ben sheppard material...one of his brilliant compositions....just want to make sure you credit where credit is due...
you are not alone brother zorbhead. I love this song... and almost all of Soundgarden. Unfortunately, as a teen I wasted too much time on Nirvana. I should have put that time on Soundgarden. Never too late. Now, I am listening to everything with dedication and trying to pick up some of the stuff on guitar. greetings from India (Pune...that's close to Bombay)
GREAT lyrics..."hey you patients, where's your surgeons?/ left you with your insides open/ left your heart out on the table/ gather round and fall right down."
This is such a great song - I can't believe I'm the first to comment and only the 103rd to listen to this brilliant music. C'mon people, notice this: "Gather round (and fall right down)"
