You yourself are saying that you are taking it further and further, but you have taken it too far and made a topic out of a foolish comment to begin with. The fact is, well, here, we elect who we want to govern, and as off yet we have not elected any drug lords or pimps to power. You make a commonality between the art of war and a criminal that runs round with a "bunch of goons I fail to see any significant parallel in a lot of what you have to say.
It's true that we elect those who govern us, certainly. But did you pick out the people who get to be elected? Or better yet, did you pick out those vying for the position who get to be exposed to the public? How many people know there were 6 candidates for president last year?
There's a certain group of people who are chosen to be picked by the people, and these are usually either the descendants of robber barons, or those with ties to these families. Ignorance of this doesn't change that.
I agree with FredricF, I dont like admitting it but without government chaos and anarchy would surely prevail! Human nature alone dictates this. The statement "there is not much difference between a criminal organisation and a government" is a general all round fail as you would find in definition of the words in question alone. Ones strives to better the people, while the other just takes.
1. Your seem to assume that there is a fixed amount of wealth and that no more can be created, it can only be distributed. Therefore all a company does is grabbing a bigger piece if the cake. (Strawman? That's what I hear you say!)
2. I may not always love my government and agree with everything they do but I have zero problem distinguishing them from the crack dealers and human trafficking networks.
I'm not sure where you're getting your first assumption from. I don't say anything about a fixed amount of wealth, rather the types of people who are willing to use force in order to secure wealth, resources, and power, while making sure to limit other people's ability to do the same. Whether wealth is limited or not is irrelevant.
So your point is that there are bad and selfish people in government, in business and among criminals? No argument there.
You remarked that psychopaths, or persons with psychopathic traits, are common at the top of any organization, well I also believe that to be true to a degree.
But I honestly fail to understand what your point is.
That we are screwed no matter what? Maybe.
That we should be aware of this? Sure!
We should start a revolution? Like that would change anything.
"2. I may not always love my government and agree with everything they do but I have zero problem distinguishing them from the crack dealers and human trafficking networks."
Really? How 'bout the fact that they created the incentive for the crack dealer to exist in the first place? KNOWINGLY, given the timeframe after the Volstead Act was repealed.
I could go on FAR beyond the limits of the text. Look deeper. The ONLY difference is perceived legitimacy.
Cannot remember voting for any crack dealers. Nor have I seen crack dealers organize health care (not everybody live in the US).
Granted, most, possibly all, states started as bands of bandits telling others that they where chosen by God to rule. But things have happened since then. States have laws that apply to everybody. The government organize police for the security of it's citizens.
Granted, everything is not perfect, but really....
1a. But, what is a criminal but the one who breaks the laws. If the criminals wrote the laws, would they be the criminals any more? Criminal organizations copy organizational structures for the sake of maintaining control. Some get into government and alter it to favour them. You are being logical. But you're missing aspects of it. Would you say justice is a formal part of the criminal element? What about morality, or ethics, or rationality. Criminals do get into power. Governments...
2a. ... can act criminally though. And when they do, it doens't bode well for us to lose the distinction. I've been watching the same kind of argument being put forth to make the claim that Capitalism has failed, when regarding the current, and similar historical economic collapses. The problem is, the events that brought about the collapse are not elements of capitalism, but of a mixed, or "controlled" economy. And, as in the past, calls are being made for more controls without reference...
3a. ...to the differences between "control", and enforcement of ethical, moral, or legal, conduct. If we say, as a rule, one cannot go around violating others, then, when someone does, claim all people are therefore bad, and need to be shackled, are we improving our standing, or confusing the issues. "Oh, look at that guy, he has unshackled fists. I saw a guy with them once pummel another dude to death. Fists should be shackled, registered, and restricted." Seems our times prefer we...
I think you're referring to the documentary "The Corporation" that concluded that corporations, as a legal body, meets all the criteria that defines a psychotic. It has no empathy and is only interested in net profit and self gain. And it's willing (and usually able) to go to any length to ensure this gain and profit.
Then again - there might very well be a study that shows CEO's are psychotic as well hehe.
I should have waited to comment until after watching this video :) I knew you'd cover the religious and corporate aspect LOL. I know which study you are talking about and it does seem quite fitting.
If you take a look at human history thats the way its always been, and unfortunately it looks like its going to stay that way for a long, long time.
The only disagreement I have is in the terminology. I would call these people (from the heads of state and CEO's down to the gang bangers) Tyrants. The way they operate is criminal, but I think that it's a tyrannical mindset that separates these people from the norm. Thats my 2 cents, take it for what its worth.
Nothing can be done, that is how the world works. Caveman days till now! Bigger stick means protection and helps with expansion. Can't change the way the world and mankind work...just hope your side has the bigger stick! ^_^
better. We have MILLIONS of little sticks. And as soon as the wielders realize that, in sufficient numbers, things change.
Not necessarily for the better, which is where the thinkers and philosophers come in.
ALL Empires expand and perish. The US has gone farther and faster than any previous empire in the known history of humanity. NO NATION has ever so vastly overextended itself nor occupied/controlled so much territory. It's unsustainable.
We only need to actually start USING them sticks. Poking on the big guys and at least make them look down. and if that's not enough, there's gonna be alot of poking.
So you have a million sticks they have a few BIG sticks. All this means is what I said was right, gonna fight it out cave-man style. So nothing is different? You will use force to make the world into one YOU feel comfortable in? What about all the others who don't fit into your way of thinking? Will they be moved to the back of the bus? Can't change the way mankind thinks/acts. Nothing can be done. Because when it comes down to it. You are standing in the same spot that they was back in the day.
I'm working on a video to give you a more in depth reply. The space limitations here made my comment look snarky, when I really didn't intend it that way. You read some things into it that I didn't intend as well, which, again, is the damn character limit. I'll get back to you as soon as I can. I already shot it, just need to edit it :)
Where do you think the money comes from that the government hands out? First they have to take it from someone else. The defenition of government is - the sanctioned use of the threat of force!!!
first viewer, and yes I can see the similarities however war and politics tend to be very different. Although diplomacy can bring about worse results than the war itself; see the treaty of Versailles.
my abnormal psych teach was talking about CEO's, and how a researcher found a way to hide a sociopath test in a questionnaire and had many CEO's take the test. And Yup many of them were, and were never diagnosed. Ha, so we probably are run by the heartless.

Further, the psych profiles of detective cops and career (read: successful) criminals are typically identical.
