why do singers 'eat' the mic? it's weird

many modern singers (ie Madonna, etc) have to because of their smaller voices (vs. Mariah who holds the mic out 2 ft)

Conversely, Tori sings a very wide range with a lot of power, nuance and modulation. but ask any singer, that is very hard to do while spread across two keyboards w/ no grounding for her diaphragm muscles to push against. Hence the sound level coming out of her mouth is lower, so mic has to be closer. U'd think, turn up mic sensitivity but U can't because of the ambient sound.
