This is a very good video. Also in case this is an older house you may want to install an overflow pan under the tanks if there are none, then if the tank springs a leak it won't flood your floor.
A big savings is to simply turn off the hot water heater , use a timer so that it only comes on for about 20 minutes at around 7pm... the rest of the time (espec in the summer you save ) . .
You are like a chinese/government advertisement. The lightbulbs you suggest are health hazards. They contain mercury and emit pulsating frequency that messes with the human nervous system.
Water is renewable. There is no shortage. The earth cleans the water either through the filtration of the soil as it goes down into the ground water or through the filtration of the clouds in the form of rain. If they would stop spraying stuff in the sky and contaminating the soil we'd be fine.
@jimprjayp "Water is renewable", sorry but it is not. There is a certain amount of water on this earth just like there is a certain amount of oil to be consumed.. When your out your out.
@jeffmolly1 All kidding aside I will be looking for a front load washer after watching your videos I had no idea how much better they work and save. Thanks for the info.
@classifiedsecretinfo No kidding, it gets old. You give away free advice and people will take the time to make nasty and ignorant comments. Manners are almost non exsistent anymore.
Our water heater is outside (in the garage). In the winter time (in AL, but it still gets down to the 00's and teens regularly), wouldn't the extra water heater holding tank actually cool the water down?
great video, and I agree major energy hugs in any home are your water heater, refrigerator, and washer/dryers, you can cut the cost of your electric bill by choosing more energy sufficient version of those appliances, like a tankless water heater and a gas dryer instead of a electric one.
I also have a question....would stripping the cover and insulation off of the pre-heater tank help it reach room temp faster. I think it would, but at the same time I wonder if the chill generated by the un-insulated tank and cold water input might cause sweating and dripping of the pre-heater, thus creating a wet mess on the floor. I'm trying to balance the scales while looking ahead. hmmmm, just wondering
Good ideas!! So Glad I stumbled on this vid. I am planning on buying or building a house in the near future and am always looking for ways to reduce costs so that I have more money in my pocket at the end of every week. I have a lot of ideas already and you just gave me a few more. Thank you very much :) I will be watching some more of your videos and maybe I will post a few of my own to your page for your evaluation. The savings will outweigh the investment costs.
good job man..most people dont realize how doing alot of little things add up.And thanks for reminding me to get a pre-heater..question..should i hook up my solar collector to the preheater or the main tank? thanks
@marcosg360 I just got a LED light bulb at home depot 11-1-11 and it cost me $9.00 for a 40 watt bulb. It has 50,000 hours in life, uses 9 watts, 429 lumins, 5 year warranty. Made by Ecosmart, bright white.
My water heater runs on Hydro electricity. One time, the heating element broke for a week. Taking cold showers for 1 week, I have to be extremely active. I got my electric bill and it dropped 30%. So I would need your timer.
Lower usage shower-heads do save water but if the water is sprayed out in more of a mist you need a higher percentage of hot water to feel/be the same temperature as it hits your skin, but overall I’m sure that you still use less of the hot & even lesser of the cold water. Unless you spend more time to rinse off, & if that is the case how much is your time worth. Now I think they make low usage that pulse or/& have rather large drops that might feel & perform the same as the more common ones.
I think that you will save a little by shutting off the water heater but not near as much as you say, I have tested it for over two years at my home. You are only saving what is lost when the heat is radiated from the tank. As for me I save about 45 min of run time not 20 hrs. as you say or ¾ of the electric used for heating water. Now for me ¾ of a hour x 1650W. Is 1.2375 KWH at 10 ¢ per. KWH is 12.375 ¢ per day x 30 = $ 3.71 per month.
As far as the preheating tank, I have to ask where is it getting the heat to pre-heat the tank, your home or maybe garage, how is that space being heated? Are you robbing Peter to pay Paul? And most of the used free water heater are thrown out because they are leaking at least where I live. Sorry If I seem nitpicky Just a though. The light bulbs though seems right on. If you want someone to proof view your video let me know. Best to you just trying to help even the best need to be proofed read.
CFL bulbs are extremely harmful though, they pump out a harmful chemical, the refresh rate gives people headaches and they are full of mercury. LED bulbs are the best but are expensive.
I thought Australia was behind on environmental Technology! its amazing how people start being environmentalist when shit hits the fan (Australia included) when it should have being done in the first place!! almost all homes in Australia (Melbourne) have Solar Panels for electricity production not because we are environmentalist but electricity costs so much! all homes have 2000L up rainwater tanks, Solar hot water panels and LED lighting, dual flush, 6L shower/H all out off necessity! COST!
@jeffmolly1 Now all homes in Australia have to be 6star homes by law. What Australia is very very behind in is the us of Recycled Building Materials and how to us resources properly! lots of wastage even with the 6 star ratings!
Full size LED lightbulbs are coming out now. CFL bulbs contain toxic mercury so it's a hazard when they break. In addition they have a transformer in every bulb. Jeff, have you metered the radiation spill and compared to standard incandescent bulbs?
Some people complain about the radiation health risks similar to overhead flourescent tube lighting common in offices, etc. The jury is still out on that one. I don't trust biased industy studies.
I swear by those compact fluorescent lightbulbs now. I live in an apartment with all my bills payed and because I just got out of college, I got the cheapest lightbulb I could get, no worry about electric usage. But I was replacing at least one about every week. Now I've switched to the CF bulbs and haven't had to replace any in 6 months and my oldest is about 9 months old and still going strong. Excellent ideas!
another thing to add to your shower head is a hot water shut of.. When the water gets hot as many people turn on water an run the shower until hot water comes out just wastes hot water. but with the shut off installed it turns off the water when it gets hot and when your ready to step in you just hit the little button and it lets the water flow hot and ready to step in.
Hey Jeff, Thanks for the window treatment trick. Got mine put up Sunday, and I really can feel the difference. Using cups of water on the stove pilot lites for hummidty, waste not want not on the gas/heat.
On a side note, I've been using a timer like you have on your water heater on the fridge, it's set to run about 45 mins every 2 hours. temps even hold in the safe zone in the upper freezer section. Works out to 9hrs usage per day.
Thanks again for all the great work and effort. John.

The water heater timer works great - been using one for a couple years as a plumber who installed my water heater turned me onto it. @smartasscomments It comes from your house temp. Your neighbors pay for the temperature change.
