  • I swear to God Diana Ross could eat this song for breakfast if she wanted to!

  • People also need to remember in this period Aretha did okay, she was no where as marketable, sold as well and as successful as the Supremes. Flo, having the same robust voice would not have done any better, not until the late 70's or early 80's was Aretha as mainstream as like now, the same for Tina Turner. Flo would have had to wait until the late 70's or 80's to achieve her success. Mary Wilson & husband Pedro killed the Supremes as she tried to dictate to the group, she ran Jean out

  • @hoochiemamaDora Jean was gone before Pedro took over.

  • because of Mary, the group wanted out of Motown; Berry was never going to let them get bigger than Diana Ross and the Supremes; Diana struggled in the 70's; Four Tops, Gladys Knight and the Pips; Marvin Gaye all left; all had great success after their time with Motown; Berry was too tangled with making diana a star; the supremes got lost in the shuffle and mary's stupid ass would not leave Motown, sad to say the ladies who became supremes Lynda, Sherrie, even Cindy had better voices & talent

  • I am an ULTIMATE Supremes fan. My love affair with them is ultimate as well. The strongest Supremes voice was and always will be Florence Ballard as she was in Aretha's league. But at the time Motown & Berry needed somone who could pull the group mainstream so alas Diana. Jean could have taken the group even higher had Berry allowed the group to but he did not; can't blame Diana that was his poor business choice. Sherrie was awesome but by then the group was dying because of Mary & her husband

  • THE MIGHT OF MOTOWN RECORDS...BRILLIANT...

  • This should have been released as the "A" side, not "Everybody's got the right"...

  • as a young man i loved this song such memories. Thanks Ladies.

    Kurt evans

  • Well to me Scherrie Payne was fire, Susaye Green just superb, Lynda Lawrence wonderful, Cindy good, Mary fantastic, but Jean Terrell was the soothing soul that the group needed. She stepped in Diana's shoes and Jean was a catch to everyone's ears but Motown knew this and didn't push the group for Jean was the ultimate lead singer they needed after Diana left. Politics as usual. I love Jean fronting the group mostly for she had it all.

  • @Vincent50 I agree. Jean had the right mix of the natural sweetness in her tone that was reminiscent of Diana's yet the powerful soul needed to access the urban market once more. Still, I think vocally, Scherrie was the strongest of all Supremes.

  • It's funny how many bloggers mention the background singers as if groups are cheating to use them...Many singers sing their own backgrounds (and that is impossible to do in a live show). These are recordings, people, with instrumentation, effects, etc. that will sometimes NEVER be in the LIVE version. So what! Diana had MORE backgrounds (by Ashford & Simpson) on her solo recordings than she ever did on Supremes records. SO WHAT! They are producing and selling sound...and MUSICAL MAGIC!

  • I loved this album so very much! And, this was one of my favorite songs on it. I was young then, and this song made me think of some of my more "special" realtionships that went wrong. It still makes me sort of meloncholy now, even though my life has turned out all right. Jean Terrell does a fantastic job on this song, and on every song of the album. Love her! Thanks!

  • My favorite line up of the group too. More powerful vocals from the ladies.

  • @MeetTheSupremes Although it's really hard to choose between them, I'd say the Mary, Cindy and Jean line-up of The Supremes was my favourite. Jean's voice was just like liquid gold. What would be your ideal Supremes line up?

  • @Bananadiva1 Sorry for the slow reply, I really love this lineup because the Supremes were a GROUP again and it resulted in better music and performances ermmm but I really love all the lineups - particularly this one, DMF and MSS (because the last Supremes album is just phenemonal)

  • BABY THEY WAS SANGIN IN THOSE DAYS !!! lOVE THIS SONG BY THE GIRLS

  • Thanks for the upload. I love this song. It's one of the best songs on one of the 70s Supremes' best albums.

  • @Bananadiva1 Yes I totally agree!! Thanks for commenting :)

  • always loved this song. "Right On" is a terrific album. One of my favorites. (Is it available on CD?)

Saw the Supremes live with and without Diana several times.. Both different.

Jean, Mary and Cindy were incredibly talented and sounded unbelievable. Saw them at the Royal Box in NYC, a small venue with the opportunity to experience their talent. Unbelievable and great. I will never forget it.

  • i did love her more than anyone ...EXCEPT santa claus

  • VERY well done!

  • This is my favorite song by this Supreme line up - really beautifully sung. This should have been a single and not a B side.

  • @skateitalian I agree. I think it's better than singles such as Floy Joy...thanks for commenting.

  • Sherlie Matthews wrote this gem!

  • Thanks! I enjoyed this--great photos--but I'm curious: why did you use the LP and not the CD version for clarity?

  • @Branner I don't have the CD, stupid me, I should have got it. Sorry, I aplogise for not doing a bit more research =(

  • red walls the man's name is Berry Gordy not Barry

  • I want to thank Mary Wilson for having the courage to stand up against Barry

decision to kick Jean out the group before we the fans and the rest world could hear a beautiful as well as a beautiful woman.

    Shame on you Barry.

  • @redwalls76 Right on, I agree, Thanks Mary and Cindy for sticking up for Jean, Berry is a prick anyway, cannot stand the man, Jean is just great and she can sing too! xxxx

  • Beautifully performed and crafted song. From Right On!, I also love The Lovin' Country -- I think if edited down to about 3 minutes, it would've made a great single for the group. In my mind, I give the American Bandstand or Soul Train test..I can picture Don or Dick introducing it to the dancers, and their really getting into it.

  • @italoman9 Another ballad they did that I think is absolutely classic is TIME TO BREAK DOWN from their album New Ways But Love Stays - which has been sampled quite a few times.

I really think it's a stunning example of the group's harmonies and Frank Wilson's incredible production =D

  • Thanks so much for this video. Jean Terrell is a fabulous singer with such a distinctive voice and aura of her own. I was a Mary Wilson fan but come to appreciate all of the ladies that made the Supremes ~~~~ No other girl group came close to them in the 70's.

  • @gxwash001 It's such a shame that the 70s lineups - particularly this one - aren't honoured as much as the iconic DMF lineup.

  • You're so right.....They had such great material & numerous occasions to obtain more outstanding hits that unfortunately not given much support....Will take what I can get.....

  • @gxwash001 I think Motown made quite a mistake in not releasing some of the songs from the 'Promises Kept' sessions - such as the brilliant Tears Left Over and Take Your Dreams Back

  • I'm new to this board - Just want to comment that this song is one of my personal favorites from the "Right On" album. I was a Supremes fan from when Jean came on board until Scherrie Payne. Brings back alot of memories - Thanks alot. Their style (sound) changed significantly after Ms Ross but I enjoyed them just as more. Just so much turnover within the group.

  • Also, According to Louvian Demps, the Andantes wern't really used in the new Supremes recording once Jean came on. except for the Floy Joy sessions

  • According to Jean, most of the Material she recorded before 1970 wasnt intended to be on an album. She said the producers wanted to hear her style to see what direction they were going to take her. Offically 4 of those song ended up on the Right On Album. Frank Wilson stated that he gave Mary and Cindy more parts to sing to creat that group song. Remember Jean was singing background to give it a full sound.

  • @blackguy69 Which four songs on the Right On album features the Andantes?

  • @blackguy69 You should listen to the Jean Terrell interview on here. She states that everything she recorded was ALWAYS recorded for the purposes of being on her recordings for THE SUPREMES. She also states that she was signed singly, BUT with the express reason of being placed in the Supremes. She was not signed as a solo act. The Supremes were already signed, so there was no reason to re-sign them. (This note is not particularly for you, but just a bit of additional information).

  • its a beautiful song

  • Yes it really is =) I love Jean on this, so angelic. Thanks for commenting.

    - JLG | JonathanLGardner

  • Oh man, I haven't heard this song since its original debut! I still love it! Don't think this was on their last Greatest Hits CD (post Diana Ross) Always loved Jeans voice!

  • Absolutely agree about the song's sound's commercial hit potential. It had all the right licks and arrangements. Would've been great as the single instead of "Everybody" following "Roof."

  • @italoman9 Here here. I think so too. This was too good to be a "B" side. This had single potential.

  • i always thought this could have been a single.other than UP THE LADDER,this is my favorite song.cant believe all the great songs left off this lp/LIFE BEATS,BETWEEN SUNDAY AND MONDAY,THATS HOW MUCH YOU MADE ME LOVE YOU etc

  • Oh this was one Right On =S However i agree, it deserved to be just a mere b-side! =D

  • great song,great video

  • Thank you very much redlabs. =)

    - JLG | JonathanLGardner

  • unlike when Diana was withthe group,Jean was really able to give the songs personality. Its a haunting , sad song....With Diana it would have worked (and ive got a feeling somewhere theres probably a Ross version in the Uni-motown vaults ) but it would have been ENTIRELY different . I love Jeans voice!!!!!

  • Well I think Diana gave songs personality HOWEVER I do agree with you to some degree. Jean is amazing. I just LOVE this song.

    Thanks for commenting nealadams70 =)

    Have a nice day.

    - JLG | JonathanLGardner

  • I understand you about the Motown vaults nealadams70...

I recall purchasing a cassette of the Supremes back in the early nineties giving "Over and Over" credit as Diana Ross and the Supremes.

Over and over -(Great song by the way and quickly became my fav of the listing.) was way after the Diana years, but back then i assumed that was the lineup on the song. ... No way was it.

    Nice Posting.

  • That songis from the Floy Joy album... liked "The Wisdom of Time ", also from that album. I guess someone who was not familiar with the group mislabeled some cassettes, Ive seen that quite a few times myself.. let me guess ...you were born in 1968.?

  • WOW! This song sounds a lot like what Diana Ross would sing! Didn't know Jean Terrell could pull off that voice!

  • Oh she sure could! In my mind she was absolutely the perfect woman to lead the post-Ross lineup.

She had a very sweet, innocent tone in her voice and could sing sweet like Diana when she wanted but she could also riff and run like she just got out of church - so she could appeal to many audiences =D

Jean Terrel's lineup is way too underrated! In fact all the 70s lineups are =(

    Thanks for commenting.

    - JLG | JonathanLGardner

  • wasnt it frank Wilson said that once he started working with tthe new lineup he used all of their voices and not the Andantes. if they were there, it was to fill out the sound. Marey did mention the Jean was also singing in the background too. I did noticed that almost all of jeans recordings with Jean were recorded before 1970.

  • The date I put in the title I put because that was the year the album was released =)

    Thanks for watching and commenting.

  • jean Terrell was signed to Motown in 1969..while the Supremes played their lremaining dates with Diana Ross, Terrell was in the studio with Frank Wilson, and Johnny Bristol recording the tracks that would be featured on the RIGHT ON album, while the other tracks would be shelved(unreleased)

  • ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!

  • Most definately! Thanks for commenting Rodney =)

How'd you get onto the internet?

  • Why wasn't this a hit? This song is the truth!

  • EXACTLY!! LOL

Well it was kinda a hit - as it was the b-side to Everybody's Got The Right To Love (which peaked at #21 in the US, #11 on the US R&B and #29 on the US Adult Contemporary chart) -- see description for more details

  • No problem =)

    Thanks for watching and commenting.

    - JLG | JonathanLGardner

  • Jean' voixce here is superb!!! Better than ANYONE!

  • I agree - Jean was really an amazing vocalist! That 70s lineup of the group - even though they had a handful of big hits are soo underrated!

    Thanks for commenting =D

    - JLG | JonathanLGardner

  • Isnt it interesting that even though there were actually only TWO OFFICIAL leads of the Supremes, Jean and Diana, people often say Scherrie was the third lead. After Jean left, the entire FORMAT CHANGED and they became an ensemble group with NO fully appointed lead!!! In fact, the tunes on the first 3 lps were split EXACTLY EVENLY between with either M/S or S/M/S, as were live shows.

  • @jmarnon However, the singles that were released was all Scherrie with the exction of He's My Man" which Scherrie shared a lead with Mary.

however on the album fillers, they did split the leads.

  • I remember this song I was turning 13 years old in 1970. Ilove the new Supremes back then. They were very good and beautiful. Oh the wonders of being a young teenage boy and being attracted to the opposite. I was crazy about those Supremes,

  • I always thought this was a gorgeous song. Too bad that in 1970, more DJs didn't pick up on this B-side and push it further--it had single-quality hitness woven all through it, with production, leads and backgrounds. I hated how Andantes were on many of The "new" Supremes' first album -- here, Mary and Cindy as with all Supremes hits during their tenure together, always made Supremes records' backgrounds sound much better and more natural.

  • They sure did! Is it Mary and Cindy on this (because it sounds that way to me)?

    Thanks for commenting =)

    JLG | JonathanLGardner

  • Per Wikipedia, which I know is not the most accurate source, the Andantes: did background vocals on Then We Can Try Again," "Wait A Minute Before You Leave Me," "I Got Hurt (Trying to Be the Only Girl in Your Life)" and "Take a Closer Look at Me". Of course, they are on "Time and Love" on the "Touch" album too. Also, per MW in "Supreme Faith" JMC recorded "But I love you more the same day as "Up the Ladder..." and "Everybody's Got the Right to Love"

  • Thanks so much for the info =D

Have a wonderfully FLOriffic day - it's her b'day today.

    - JLG | JonathanLGardner

  • Comasti italoman9, Ditto It had a single/quality hitness "woven " all through it!!!***:):):) Loamo "Chin Chin" Chente Anni Salute Ciao:):):)

  • Thank you. Jean, Mary and Cindy were my obsession in the '70's. I wish I had the skills to do a video because I would do one for "Here Comes the Sunrise." Love that son so much!

  • Not only do I love this song, but thank you for that picture of the ladies in the black trench coats. THAT would have made a great album cover shot as they had become bigger than the glitter itself at this point.

I do still resent the Andantes on back up on this. Frank Wilson could have and should overdubbed just Mary, Cindy and Jean on all cuts.

    Los

    NYC

  • I LOVE the picture too. When I was looking for a pic to make the video, I came across it in my (still growing) collection and knew it was the ONE!

    Thanks so much for commenting.

Is it The Andantes on backing here? It sounds like Cindy, Mary and Jean to me... =S

    - JLG | JonathanLGardner

  • It is Mary and Cindy on background.

  • So I correctly thought =D

    Thanks for the confirmation =)

Thanks for commenting - JMC were totally awesome =D

    - JLG | JonathanLGardner

  • "HERE COMES THE SUNRISE" is from "TOUCH."

  • how beautifully clear were they at this point. thank you for posting.

  • Truly. The 70s lineups were so underrated and overshadowed by the 60s =(

    Thanks for commenting though =D

    - JLG | JonathanLGardner

  • Never get tired of hearing this GREAT song. Jean Terrell does an amazing lead vocal - and the harmonies are simply angelic. Thanks!

  • You are so right with that comment! Well said.

  • hi jonathan,

  • what program do you use to put your videos on youtube b/c i use windows media for my vids and it is crap i can not make no more vids lol

  • I use WIndows Movie Maker too - it was sooo frustrating making this video because I used so many video clips (which led to WMM crashing everytime I even dared to click on one xD)

  • yeah crashes alot

  • Love, love, LOVE this song. One of the all-time great Supremes ballads. Jean Terrell sings the fuck out of it. I remember it was the flip side of "Everybody's Got the Right to Love." Thanks for posting.

  • Yes Jean had a VOICE! Such a beautiful mix of sweet innocence and downright power!

    Thanks for commenting.

    - JLG | JonathanLGardner

  • I LOVE THIS SONG, always have. I was just looking through my Jean Terrell, Cindy Birdsong & Mary Wilson pictures last night and then BAM!!! You send this video. One of my ALL-TIME favorites from their Right On! album. I wish I had a cd of this album. Thanks so much for this gem!!!!

  • Haha, this WOULD have been posted like 2 days ago if Windows Movie Maker wasn't such a moody b**** - always crashing!

Anyway, thanks sooo much for commenting - it's one of my favs too =)

    Have a wonderfully s u p r e m e day.

    JLG | JonathanLGardner

  • "THIS IS THE STORY - THE JEAN TERRELL YEARS" is a box set of all the Supremes CD's from RIGHT ON to ...JIMMY WEBB and some unreleased cuts also. Includes the front and back covers.

  • Excellent video! FYI, Jean also recorded backing vocals with Mary & Cindy.

  • Oh yes, I forgot to put that in the description - another great thing about Jean =D

  • Lovely song.

  • It sure is =)

    Thanks for commenting.

    - JLG | JonathanLGardner

  • So now I am wondering if it would be a good idea to find a way to upload an actual interview with Mary, Cindy and Jean back in 1970 with David Frost. It's about 90 minutes long and includes alot of music. If I sent it out to someone, can someone add pics to accompany it?

    Los

    NYC

  • 90 minutes =O Good lord xD

  • I WOULD LOVE TO SEE IT! Have a copy?

  • LOL, I would love to see/hear it as well.

  • I like it =)

the cover you made is really nice and I like it that you used parts of performences which you made B&W

  • Thanks so much Marvin for your lovely comment =)

Putting the videos in was such a pain because Windows Movie Maker kept crashing xD

  • yes it's sometimes really annoying or you're saving the video and it is at 70% or more and crash xD

    it's sooo shit xD

    anyway it's freeware

  • Yes xD then you have to edit the video so that it saves -_-

  • xD yes or try again and delet some pics
