The was a perfect analogy by Roy, that fight came exactly to mind when I watched May vs Gatti [yrs ago]. This is a stupid complaint and video, God Bless Gatti!!!!
@dafuksup He basically said that this reminded him of the Roy Jones vs. Pazienza Devil fight where you had a A+ Fighter outclassing a C- fighter. yes, he referred to himself in the 3rd person. Classic when he does this. Also classic when he rants on at high speeds. But, he still remains my favorite HBO announcer because of those same reasons and he knows his boxing knowledge. Plus, he actually was a great champion once. Nobody else at HBO can say that except George Foreman.
@mcentepede yeah dont get me wrong im a big roy jones boxing fan, but i dont think he should be a commentator because he cant speak properly at all and i honestly cant understand wtf he is saying here, he must have brain damage is all i can say.
@neometalx9 theres no doubt he knows his boxing. hes an amazing boxer. i also know hes a pretty funny guy, like when he talks about himself in third person and shit. but what im saying is i cant fucking understand him half the fucking time. and wtf are you saying "a native speaker"? lmao wtf does that even mean
Yeah fair enough he draw conclusions to his own experiences alot of the time but Roy did talk more sense and make more relevant technical observations on fights than the shit Larry Merchant has been spewing in his later years.
Um, "OneHitWonderTarver", do you believe in rational discussion?
So Glen Johnson & Montell Griffin are "bums", huh? Doesn't that right there pretty much show that your understanding of boxing is that of a child? If you need a reminder of what that "bum" Johnson did to your boy Roy, type in "Glen Johnson KO's Roy Jones" and have a look.
Guess I should've known from your username that reasoning is not your forte.
@OneHitWonderTarver Guess I don't understand all the hate for Tarver (I mean to build your whole username around it?). He beat RJJ twice, including knocking Roy so silly he was hearing birds chirping for hours. Beat Griffin too, and Johnson. Not saying he's one of the all-time greats, but what's wrong with giving him his due? I hope it's not b/c he toppled a lot of people's idol. (?)
@pnutbutrncrackers - Stop throwing bum names Antonio Tarver had beating. Name any A class p4p boxer Tarver has beating besides Roy Jones jr? I'm waiting.
@pnutbutrncrackers rofl glen johnson had roy hearing birds too, is he on roy's level too then? no, because he didn't beat a 90s jones, he beat the shit version of jones.
That was my only complaint with him as an announcer. He always talked about himself and his fights.
Other than that, he knew exactly what to say, and always was able to predict when a fighter was about to go down. The Trinidad-Mayorga fight was a perfect example of it.
"Trinidad can end this fight with a body shot."
Trinidad went to the body, and down went Mayorga.
Roy really knows his shit when it comes to boxing.
it is a good comparison though, Paz-Roy was the only thing comparable to Gatti-Mayweather, one guy was so out classed he couldn't land a single punch. only Roy and Floyd are able to make top 10 fighters look like complete amateurs.
The most irritating part of it is the third person thing... we know you are Roy Jones, so stop saying Roy Jones like you aren't shamelessly self-promoting yourself!
@jmoneypaperstacks Vinnie and Gatti were nowhere near the top ten , even in the prime of their careers .. both good fighters , but you're giving them a little too much credit.
@FLOOD504 Well even when they were at their best, they weren't at the best weight when they fought Roy and Floyd respectively. Paz was his best at 154 and Gatti was his best at 130. Gatti against Floyd around say '98, would have more competitive than this. By 2005, Gatti had been in a million wars and beat up pretty bad.
@sonofthedestroyer He certainly should have gotten out, or at least stayed at heavyweight. What was the point of going down two divisions to fight Antonio Tarver? Oh well... the Magic Man certainly thanks him for validating his career up to that point. I do think Tarver justified himself as a good fighter with his wins outside of the Jones trilogy. Glen Johnson, Woods, Griffin, Harding and Reggie Johnson are some real deal wins.
@DWiens421 roy is the only commentator who is worth having as a commentator. otherwise i think we should have an option to have sound but without commentating, just hear the punch impacts etc.
@johnny4463435 Antonio Tarver is a pretty solid commentator too.
However, you know who is actually the most insightful boxer that I've heard talk about the sport? Surprisingly, it was Allan Green. His explanation of the way blunt power vs. speed power functions when it comes to the way it jolts your equilibrium was excellent. He did it on ESPN2 the night that Pascal beat Pittman and Miranda sparked Banks.

As an announcer you cant get a much better fight analyzer than Roy Jones, he calls a punch before it even lands.

Jones was a good commentator when he wasn't tooting his own horn.
In the Mayweather fight before this, against Bruseles, Jones said something like "he's like Roy Jones, you never know what he's going to do".
Then Larry Merchant said "he might get knocked out".
